I grew up in the city but my family brought many country traditions here with them at the turn of the 20th century. In the 50's, fresh veggies and fruits were hard to come by without paying exorbitant transportation costs from Ca. or Fl. So, we picked many green tomatoes, wrapped them in newsprint and tucked them away in basement rafters. when winter was hard to take, we'd pull a few down, set them in a sunny window for a few days to finish ripening and feast on tomato sandwiches!

ART and BRI next time listen to the lil one. Gather lots of them most likely from your creek on property. Season water, think of Lousiana when seasoning, add potatoes smaller ones preferbably, inject butter in those suckers. Add corn on the cob and sausage. Slap newspaper all over the picnic table, pour whole pot onto table and go to work. Now that's great eating. After you try I bet you all would like. Next, if you all are feeling a lil more adventurous try frog legs. Step farther, go for alligator. If you guys are hesitant about the gator n frog legs I suggest trying them first fried like fish with cornmeal.

Did you put any seasoning in the water? This is a great resource. I like that your kids aren’t afraid to try new things. My granddaughter loves to try new things and even if she’s wary we encourage a small bite. I grow tomatoes that do not ripen just for this and fried green tomatoes. Thanks for sharing!

My daughter is getting curious about her food so when we were at the beach this year I caught a flounder and she helped me filet it up, cook, and eat it (as much as a 3 yr old can help in those tasks). I found she is much more willing to try things and eat her dinner when she helps.Crawdads are yummy!!! Good on your daughter for that idea.

In Australia we call them yabbies. also we are in subtropical qld so we avoid planting in summer things either drown in heavy rains or fry in the sun. winter is so mild here we easily plant spring and autumn crops and sometimes, like this winter, tomatoes, eggplant and herbs live right into the next spring and keep producing without covering all season. I do miss defined seasons for some things tho. like a break in pests. nasty things. Your tomatoes look great

From Southeast Louisiana here. Crawfish is a staple food for us from Christmas till about June!! In that time period we boil sometimes 80 lbs. on a Saturday and party. You name it, we put it into the boil. Hot and spicy along with some ice cold beer is how we roll!!
