I think all you should have said is it it possible to keep all your data but it's quite complex. All you should have recommended is that if you use this feature make sure you back up your data and never remove the SD card, so buy a big one in the first place.
You can move storage on app-by-app basis. Just go into the app listings in settings. One of the data points for each app is where it is stored. You can click on that and move it. I just had to move Modern Combat 5 off my internalzied SSD and back to actual internal storage due to freeze-ups. It's not 100% even on true internal storage but at least it is reasonably playable. It clearly has not been well optimized for the platform at all.
+Lon Seidman oh. Interesting. I figured it must have moved the data because of my experience with Mortal Combat 5. On the SD it would hang for a moment or two quite often as you moved into new scenes. Once I moved it back to actual internal it is much better. Still not 100% but noticeably better. I assumed it must be to do with the speed of the data pull.
it might be a good idea to do an update video about the pros and cons of using an SD card as the internal storage for Nvidia Shield k1 tablet since it only come with 16 GB of internal memory initially. Maybe throw in some ideas of what the best SD would be to use in terms of speed and reliability. as always keep up the good work... thanks for the information very helpful indeed. till then be well...
You saved me for sure! 👍👍👍 I messed up after watching another youtuber on doing this. You can’t really on anybody (Is not that they don’t know, but Don’t Explain as well like Baby steps) You are the man to go to! when one don’t understand this confusing everyday techie stuffs! Should consider writing books, I would be the first one buying books from ya! Thanks for your hard work!!! 🤚
I was using a regular 1TB external drive as my adopted storage for apps and data/files (media is on a NAS) I wanted to swap to a faster 500GB SSD external drive. Of course everything was too big to fit on the internal 16 GB. What I ended up doing is using a powered USB hub adding a third USB thumb drive and shuffle stuff around. Moved data to the third thumb drive and apps to the internal. Made the 500GBSSD adopted then moved the files/data off of the thumb-drive. It took a fair amount of time but in the end it worked. So you need a USB hub and an extra drive to use temporarily
Can you someone please explain how to set up an external hard drive with internal memory? I just bought the Nvidia shield tv 2017 with 16gb. It's annoying as hell as I can download apps etc as storage is too low Please explain. I can't find any tutorials on RUclips Cheers
On my NVIDIA shield I am unable to install an app on the shield I added a sdcard and it list 256 gb storage when I install an app it says staging then it reports parsing error cancel
Hi I want to do screen record on my nvidia shield tv but says out of space but I have 7gb to use up it use to record into my photos and videos section but not working do I have to create a path or folder and how I do that
Sorry, but in my case didn't work. After I did this steps: if I done eject only, like you did, it works; but if I fizically remove the SSD card almost all my apps disappeared. Almost nothing left on my NVIDIA shield. Maybe because the "internal storage" where I moved the apps it's on the actual SSD card, not the internal storage of Nvidia shield. What can I do to move back in Nvidia shield internal storage, not on that part of SSD card that Nvidia see like "internal storage"? That the question
Hey, Lon! I just found out that the Raspberry Pi folks just unleashed the Pi 3. I would very much like to check it out, but could you review it for us?
so is it fair to say that you just rooted your device with SD card? Id like to know how to read files I allready had on a SD card...OR under this method could I take the SD card out and say plug it into my desktop and add files to it... example a movie I downloaded from desktop? Things of that nature? And by doing it this way will it suffer from slower speed at all sir? Thanks so much!!
I’m regretting adding my 2tb hd as things aren’t working properly. Kodi keeps saying waiting for external storage. I’ve moved everything back to internal but all I want is to store media content on the external for viewing and listening in Plex. Also Plex keeps going offline too. It’s getting stressful. Please help Lon.
Hello, please tell me: On the 16go of storage displayed by the console, how are there actually available once the update system under Android 7.0 (Displayed under ES explorer)?
Lon is there any limit for an sd card size? when saving/downloading games, do i need the feature as an internal storage? or can it be as a removable one? if i understand, an internal storage is mostly for android apps?! ILAN
@Lon - have a few questions to You: I'd like to know where Shield TV cache/buffer all data when watching videos for example from RUclips app ? Does it keep and write all data on internal storage ? If still writes in same place on memory does this not fault built in memory cells ? Does it worth to add pendrive as internal storage to save internal memory chip ?
How do you save your information to Google to be able to restore your device, looking around the device it isn't exactly obvious? Thank you for the video on this topic.
I increase my shields internal hd by adding a 2 tb WDhdand transfered 7gb of files to the wd hd. Now i want to put these files back to the shield. After doing this 1.1 gb of DL apps remained in the WD hd. How can I send these apps back to the shield ?
If you buy the Shield Pro just to stream Kodi would you say not to buy it? Right now I bought the Shield and a Reveal Box. I haven’t opened the Shield yet in cause I want to send it back to Amazon. I also bought the NETGEAR Nighthawk X10. What do I do?
I can’t even get an external drive or flash drive to format as internal on the 16gb storage. It keeps failing to format anything. I’ wanted to download android store games and play but I’m just gonna use it to stream GeForce now and movie watching.
hey i really hope you could help me now i'm desperately searching all night.. what I've done is i use lenovo k3 note and it runs on marshmallow so I've formatted my sandisk 32 GB SD card as internal later i got greedy with an new custom ROM and without even thinking and backing up and formatting SD card I've erased the system and now i can't access my SD card every-time it asks to format it and I've lots of very important data i don't want to lose please help..!!
Hey Lon. I'm a recent subscriber but I'm already a fan. I have 16gb shield tv and have formated a 64 gb sd card as internal without any problems. The thing is i no longer can make the shield recognize my wd 1tb elements usb hdd... wtf. I'm not sure it's because the 6.0 update or not because everything worked just fine when i bought it. The hdd is formated in ex-fat... any ideas?
Please help! I had finally bought into the Shield TV hype recently when my Intel Atom Kangaroo HTPC started major throttling. All was fine with the shield until it bricked after 3 days of use while I was playing on Dolphin Emulator. In a huff, I returned the Shield and demanded a refund. Since then, I picked up a mini ITX HTPC with a GTX1060 which I found to be much more suitable for my needs. Unfortunately, when I tried plugging in my 1TB HGST USB 3.0 external HDD, I discovered that the Shield puts an encryption on attached drives which render them useless to PCs. As I am left without a Shield now, I am afraid that my trusty 1TB drive has become yet another brick. Does anyone have any experience decrypting/formatting a previously attached Shield drive using ONLY Windows??
I think recommending using a fast USB thumbstick or hard drive is bad advice. Just buy one of these 90 megabyte per second micro sd's. I am using one at the moment and I feel no speed issues. All you should recommend is that they buy a big one initially, don't cheap out on it, make sure it's a fast one and don't pull it out. Back up frequently. People will pull out there USB devices to charge their controllers and stuff....
+Mark Seven hey mate, i got a samsung something, i have forgotten. the go pro website recommends some of the fastest micro sd cards out! but sandisk have just said they are releasing some micro sd's with i think 275 mb/s sequential read. the closest out now that i am aware of are 90 mb/s. That might be worth waiting a couple months for!
Hi there. Currently, I have a 64gb card as removable storage in my nvidia shield tv. I've bought a 128gb card and want to set it up as internal storage as I've run out of room on my 16gb storage. My question is how can I get my ROM files transferred over to the 128 card? The games and apps I can always reinstall and save the card after it's formatted, I just want the ROM files transferred. Can I do it through ES File Explorer if I put them on a USB? If someone could help that would be great!
+Lon Seidman They do need to make it easier to understand. On the other hand it is simpler than expanding the storage on an Apple TV. Also, using the Shield TV probably isn't an 'older relatives' kind of device for most people. But if it is then you can always get the pro version to avoid such hassles. A lot of this is clearly for Google to satisfy contractual obligations of service providers and their DRM demands which go along with them. The best thing would have been if Nvidia simply used an M.2 SSD in the Shield TV. That would have been sweet.
***** It's just not this. The update itself is wonky and has been screwing around with many users shields. I won't even update my shield for another 2 months until a patch is released to correct the glitches. If google wants android TV to be adopted by the masses, it needs to be easy to understand/use. Thats why the chromecast is so successful.
+kevgret I love my Chromecast but to be honest the reason I have a Shield TV to deal with is partly because my elderly father just couldn't get the hang of the Chromecast. And my mom - well let's not even get into that. hahahaha. As for the update I believe some people are having trouble. But to be honest I did the upgrade as soon as it was offered and I've had no particular issues at all. The scrolling on the main screen visually seems not quite as smooth. But it does not seem in the least slower so I don't really care. I really like having better control in the new permissions model. The long press on the back button to get to power options on the main screen is great. Not a huge deal though as I used to just let it go to sleep on its own. The whole internal storage thing absolutely could be more straight forward. But it has allowed me more use of my 16GB model. I don't game that much but could not fit everything I wanted to try out on the 16GB model and now I can. And while Mortal Combat was unplayable (to me) on SD as internal storage, Portal seems fine with it. I might see if I can improve things with faster storage. An external hard drive or something. I don't know.
I really dont understand what the fuss is all about here. Whats the point of removing external storage after merging it with the rest? Why would you want to do that in the first place? This is like creating a flexible Raid array on a pc, then removing a drive and arguing about the way it is handled.. XD
+Francois Roy Yes I was wondering the same. Why remove it and it won't work in anything else. I see no point in removing it and nothing else will accept it.
+Power3003 the problem was that, right now... Apps need to be updated to look for the internal data externally.. Mame for example kept looking in the wrong place for config files and wouldn't work.
+Lon Seidman Again, this is like creating a Raid array. You never get to decide what goes where?! And yes, I'd expect the reverse process to be difficult. If possible at all! I don't see why you were expecting to be able to do so. I don't remember the exact wording they are using upon installation, but it seemed pretty darn clear to me from the get-go. I'm just baffled to see you considered this particular case was worthy of a video. 2, in fact. Anyway. Take care!
+Paul Brownlie That is solved by moving the entire application over after the data is moved over. The SD card is treated as an extension of the internal storage and looks no different to the app. And other apps that still don't get fixed by moving the application over is fixed by a reinstall (yes I have experience with this using a 16gb zenfone 2 with the SD card merged).
Nvidia shield console sucks! i plug in an external HDD is shows its plugged in but no way to move it from the internal HDD to the external HDD. Then I try to move my games from the internal HDD to the micro sd it gives me the option to move it but it never does. it moved 64 MB you of 3.8gb wtf Google. what a waste of money
Here my question if I already formatted on my computer do I need to formate it on my shield once connected. I plugged it in my shield and open es file explorer. Without formatting on my shield I see internal and external . If I format it on my shield I only see one drive internal . Looks like my internal and external have combine into one. I want to be able to move stuff between the two what should I do not wanting them combine. Also I see nothing about move data now when do you see that
I think all you should have said is it it possible to keep all your data but it's quite complex. All you should have recommended is that if you use this feature make sure you back up your data and never remove the SD card, so buy a big one in the first place.

That's why I have the 500gb version. I haven't experience any problems with my pro. I say always go the bigger storage option.
lucky you maybe you should wait and you will get a problem with the pro hdd just like me
Going on 2 years with the 500gb with no problem
they are very good about replacing the shield if you do have a problem
as usual Lon excellent video thanks so much

I saw you had Gamesome installed.... Were you able to get it working with the newest update? How? I don't think anyone else has been able to.

that USB drive you have is a Kingston hyperx that mother f***** is expensive I just looked at one that is weird
Awesome video even though it’s been 5 years. Can I reverse the process?. Thanks

Phil Drums that would be the Pro+ for Samsung at 90 mb/s
Can't you just back it up to a PC?
Hi there.
Currently, I have a 64gb card as removable storage in my nvidia shield tv. I've bought a 128gb card and want to set it up as internal storage as I've run out of room on my 16gb storage. Yes ES file explorer should help with that, or you can copy the roms over from your PC onto the stick.
Adam Gibson i have the 500 GB more space so u can download lots of stuff on it
Way to go google.. this is why shield tv/android tv will never gain widespread adoption.. How can I give something like this to my older relatives??
