Having the chairs perpendicular to the tv makes watching it just as uncomfortable as being above the fireplace, though. That’s my biggest dilemma, and I see everyone doing this but it just isn’t practical (especially with back/neck problems). How would you do a layout like this but keep the tv across from the sofa while dealing with a fireplace?

    • @AlexisHowell17
      @AlexisHowell17 3 года назад +6

What if the club chairs are swivel? So the people on the sofa can have a conversation with those in chairs, but if you’re sitting in the chair, you can rotate towards the TV.

We're facing the exact same problem & considering this precise layout. Lucky for me my hubby likes to lie down to watch TV, so he can do that on the sofa. I'm happy to sit up, so can easily turn the armchair to face the TV most of the time & only turn it back towards the coffee table when we have company! :-)

I agree 100% regarding the look of a centered coffee table. It helps with the balance of the room.
I use this method for my livingroom/front room/display room/the first area people see to make a good impression room.
But as for functionality in a family/tv room, you have to lean super far to get to the dip!
My tv/family room has a similar layout...eerily similar. What I did was bring the coffee table closer to the sofa...for functionality.
Regarding the chairs, I spaced them out a bit and put a side table in between.
It looks fine to the common mortal when you're viewing the room at eye-level. It looks unbalanced when viewing from above.
But if I were going to list the home on the market, I'd do the centered coffee table method you highlighted for the family room too.. Its still more pleasing to the eyes.
    Thanks for the vid!

But those are the only 2 walls. The space is open to the kitchen and it’s not very big. But it is a comfortable space. Now I have a leather sofa and leather loveseat (from my last house). I would love a leather sectional chaise but do t know what else or how to p,ace them or even if that would be the right furniture for the space. I’ve been looking for 2 years but I’m so nervous to buy something that’s not the right fit for the space. I’ve literally looked everywhere for inspiration and all I can find is bigger spaces with more walls. I would love your opinion as I really like your expertise and style.

Also I have a wall on one side and open kitchen on the other. Not sure if that makes sense to you but I have always had a hard time decorating. Would placing the TV above the fireplace be a better option? Already realize I need to change paint and furniture because it is currently very dark and I have a massive circular rotating chair and an L shaped sectional which currently block the fireplace.

The opposite wall from the fireplace has a very large window and is much shorter then the fireplace wall. The living room with is not very wide and as it s used every day to pass through it to go to the TV room it s very hard to find a perfect furniture layout

I watched your video to see if I could find another layout that would work with my space but it is what I have now, except I don't have two chairs, I have a love seat. I wish I knew how to add a picture, I'd share my living room because it is pretty much how I have my living room laid out. My entire living area is an open floor plan. My living room space is small and rectangular. I have a brick fireplace on one end with the porch door on one side and a window on the other. Across from the fireplace is where the TV is mounted to the wall. That is the best place to for it. I have a love seat centered on the long wall. An oblong bench in the center, acting as a coffee table, which I love. On the other side I have my larger 3 seater sofa with reclining ends. Everything sits on 8-1/2 x12 rug. I just bought my rug which I love lighter colors to make the room larger.

I don’t have a fireplace, so on my 82” wall I have a unit that holds my TV and some decor. I have a semi large coffee table and my couch is opposite the TV unit and the coffee table sits dead center. I like your idea of adding lots of things to it such as books and flowers, so I’ll be doing that. To the right of my sofa is the living room windows and the patio door is next to the windows. I have a club chair kitty corner facing my sofa. My living space is small and I can’t put my sofa in front of the windows because it’s just as wide as the wall of windows and the arm of it ends where the patio door begins.

I watched Sarah's (from Sarah's house) video about how the room should be layed out. She said the first thing should be the thing that is happening in the room. So, in this case they want to watch tv in the room that is obviously not designed to that function. I would perhaps put the tv to the right side corner or wall. Tv's were put to the corner when they first entered the living room, because people were used to place living room furniture to conversation rather than staring at wall together. Tv should be placed so that it is in front of the most people in the room. Because your mind is not in the room when watching tv, all you need is dark place and at least one wall. So the darkest corner in the room is best place for tv. This room has the fireplace, which itself makes a focus point to the room. The wall right-hand side could be the solution. Put tv to that wall to some kind of cabinet, or hide it behind curtains when not used. I would choose chairs instead of the sofa or maybe try to find another placement for the tv all together. Maybe we could think tv as an individual thing and give everyone their private tv. That way the living room could be for conversation once again..

My sofa I like across from tv (in the middle of trying to figure out new sofa, accent chairs and coffee table, side table(s?), so no rush. I'm living happily in my bedroom right now! I have a living room with a doorway at every corner, one of them being the front door so it opens up right into the space, and it’s so small that if I tried to pull the couch away from the wall I would have no space left for chairs anywhere much less a coffee table. Plus it’s the only passage way between all the rooms of the house so if you want to get from one room to any other room, you have to walk through it. The result is a room with furniture smashed against the walls and zero coziness.

It all depends on the size of the TV. There is a natural view for humans to look forwards at 10% above base horizon.

I understand what she is saying and can see how that would work for many viewers, but for me, no. I dislike the appearance of a blank television screen, so ours is housed in a beautiful cabinet that also includes space for our CD speakers and player (yes we still have one). Our cabinet was purchased unfinished, a good piece of solid, real wood. My husband did an excellent job of staining it. Cabinet is placed in a corner, on the diagonal, which is echoed on opposite corner by a very tall display cabinet that is glassed on 3 sides and has glass shelves (so doesn't appear heavy despite it's height).
No on coffee tables, to me a junk collector. Seating is two club chairs with a small waist high (when seated) table with 2 drawers. This way can place a beverage cup to the side instead of leaning forward and down as with a center coffee table. Also have a guest chair with medallion back. Club chairs only matching items in room. We also have fitted in small gas stove and console table behind club chairs in front of two windows.
One of our first projects was to remove the non-opening picture window (that faced the street) and replace with the double hungs. Looks better and now have good cross ventilation.
Room is not huge, but all fits without crowding and very comfortable and convenient!

So we're expecting people to watch the TV with their necks turned the entire time or did I get that wrong?

If you don’t watch much tv it’s perfect. If you do, your neck will start hurting lol not functional for me

You watch TV diagonally?? You know that’s gonna ruin your neck and graphic quality

You're kidding, right? While I think you're probably correct regarding getting a lighter looking couch, it seems as though you've completely overlooked a very, VERY important consideration.
    WATCHING TV!!!
The only way you could lay that room out worse for watching TV would be to put the couch facing the fireplace with the TV on the wall opposite the fireplace.
Find out WHY the TV is in THAT room. If it's the only suitable room in the house, a very common situation, then find out what is the more important function in that room. Watching TV or socializing?
If you're staging that house to sell or Instagram pics or impress other interior designers, then your design is dead on. If it's for most people to live in, then you've built a living room where only ONE PERSON can watch TV in comfort, and that's by hogging the entire couch by laying down on it. IF that's the design goal, good on ya'. I sure as hell wouldn't want to watch a movie with my family in that layout, much less bingewatch something. And using the TV for games, in that layout? Fuggedahboutit!!

Very impractical layout. This will end with every viewer having a sore neck for looking sideways at the TV. Try it!!

You're not suppose to put a TV over a fireplace

..... whoever decided that putting a television over a fireplace was a good idea is absolutely ridiculous.... it's not the optimal viewing height, causes neck problems, and it detracts from the beauty of your fireplace unless you have it in some kind of enclosed cabinet where you don't have to look at it all the time..
I'm sorry, I just cannot agree with that " TV over the Fireplace thing '...it just looks horrendous to me.

You should never place the tv over the fire place. Too high and looks stupid
