    It was an incredible race, this crash, the one with 17 laps to go involving 4 or 5 other cars. A lot of fender benders knocking parts off of cars and 3 blown engines. But that last 11 lap race at the end was just incredible. Glad no one was seriously hurt, a good show and race from every one of those drivers out there. And a big congrats to Takuma Sato and his 1st Indy win.

    After watching this crash about 30 times, I am completely convinced that Dixon survived this crash due to his instinct to turn into Wilson's car at the last second. His initial contact trajectory would have sent him straight into the inside catch fence and we would have seen a Wikens scenario of carnage. What an incredible crash...and his first response is to apologize to Camping World lol

    This crash happened right in front of me. It was like slow motion horror watching Scott's car just hang in the air. I was scared shitless hoping he wouldn't hit cockpit first like Greg Moore and Dan Wheldon. Of all the years I've been there this wreck was the one I've always feared. At first I didn't know who it was that went airborne then when I heard it was Scott I joined the rest of the fans in applause that he was ok. Scott, his wife Emma and their two daughters are the epitome of Indy family. Thank God he got through it.

    Jesus Christ, I'm amazed they both walked away from that. When I first saw this they just showed the clip of the crash and I had very serious concerns for the safety of the drivers, they both took several massive impacts in that one. I rather suspect Helio Castroneves is going to be needing fresh underwear after getting through that, somebody was really looking out for all three of those guys in that one as it could have gone so many different types of horribly wrong in so many ways...

  • @dirkthes2s

    You can talk about improved safety all you want- it's pure luck that he survived this. If the car lands in a slighty different angle on the barrier he has no chance of surviving this. But I guess that's just oval racing for you... they take some pretty big chances.

    • @amileoj9043
      @amileoj9043 7 лет назад +12

      You are quite mistaken. Without the crumple zones, the carbon fiber tub, the HANS, the molded seat, the fuel cell, the soft walls, etc., the actual angle of impact here would have been quite sufficient instantly to have ended Scott Dixon's young life.
      That drivers almost always survive such devastating crashes today is the result of a conscious series of decisions to make driver safety a priority--decisions which required considerable expense and, more to the point, considerable moral courage, to overcome the kind of fatalism that says such tragedies are pure matters of chance, about which nothing can, or should be done.

    • @IMindiffernt
      @IMindiffernt 7 лет назад +40

      Amil Eoj But what he was saying was completely accurate. If the car had rotated only a few more degrees, his head would have directly impacted the barrier. That would have instantly killed him.

    • @vinrusso821
      @vinrusso821 7 лет назад

      Even if it didn't hit his head, anything outside that tub had impacted at that angle, he would be lucky just to lose his legs.

Its the biggest crash I have saw in 30 years of watching motorsport and it is truly remarkable that someone didn't get seriously hurt, at first I thought it was a 3 car crash but after seeing all the replays its the engine,gearbox and suspension that hurtles back across the track towards another car and some ungodly speed. What’s ironic about these Amazing Drivers who display incredible driving skills is that statistically, they’ve been deemed the most reckless drivers when driving on normal roads with the rest of us. I read an interesting article on that once, which was actually pretty cool because regardless, they have a zero accident rate.

    the thing that kills you in any car accident is the sudden stop. although this wreck was insane their was no sudden stop

      Delivery Dashcam not necessarily, an impact at from 280 to 220mph in a few milliseconds can still be a lethal deceleration, then a slide to a stop e.g. Earnhardt sr, dan wheldon in glancing impacts into the wall.

    I was sitting right across from this and it was only my 2nd Indy 500 out of 23 I've been to that I saw a flying car. Most times, the crowd cheers the crashes but this time it was dead silent. A few people started to cry. The violence cannot be appreciated on TV. The fact both walked away was quite a happy moment! Lost in it at the track (until the replays at least) was that Castroneves was almost killed. Only a moment different and he'd have been crushed to death.

    Every time I see a wreck like this I am always left wondering why if it's possible to build a vehicle in a specialty shop that can hit a wall at over 200 mph and leave it's occupant uninjured, why is it not possible for the major auto manufacturers to construct a vehicle that can hit the same wall at 75 mph without killing everyone inside?

      You can do much more if you strap people in using a six-point harness, a helmet, HANS, etc. But you and I don't want to drive around like this.

    • @fighterck6241

      fg46 I might if it meant I'd be safe under any circumstance. I'd even put the little infant in a mini helmet and car-seat HANS device... Sure it would take about an hour to get ready to go anywhere but if we only wore it for say cross-country trips it would cut down on our risk factors significantly...

    Thank God his car didn't flip a few more feet around and cause him to land helmet first on top of that wall! I wish they had more structural protection over their heads. Exposed heads has killed multiple drivers over the years. Most recently Dan Weldon.

    • @almostfm
      @almostfm 7 лет назад

      But in both Weldon and Bianchi's accidents, the impacts were severe enough that it tore the rear roll hoop completely off the car. You're not going to be able to build a closed cockpit that's going to protect in those circumstances unless you make it so massive that the driver can't see out

  • @jacopman
    @jacopman 7 лет назад

    Three things...........first the suspension and wheel assembly of the right front comes in his cockpit before he hits the wall while airborne ............that could have done serious damage to his hands/arms or hit his head and killed him..............then he hit the wall top of car first but missed hitting his head at such a strange angle and height against the top of the wall and/or fence..........and finally he had the presence of mind to take his hands off the steering wheel but only after he had already come off the wall which tells me he was conscious through the impact but he was really fortunate that his hands/arms weren't serious damaged from holding on to the wheel during the impact.......................in my opinion if this crash happens 10 time there is either serious injury or a fatality 8 or 9 time out 10 based on those 3 observations..........Dixy was very fortunate to survive this one......

    I still don't get why Dixon suddenly decided to turn right moments before the impact, right into Howard's car. Couldn't avoid it either way but the impact would've been very different and arguably not as massive.

    • @TheProkonover
      @TheProkonover 7 лет назад +3

      I think he did it to avoid a side crash with Howard, imagine he goes airbourne crashing into the side of the car, not the back. He could've hit dixon's head and kill him instantly.

    • @neonmotorhead9290
      @neonmotorhead9290 6 лет назад +1

      The other explanation about why he turned right is when you're driving an open-wheel rear wheel drive race car you with the engine in the back to correct a miscalculated turn or to avoid a crash one must let go of the gas and steer it to the opposite way. Some of the drivers set up their IndyCars so it veers to the left since it is an oval track so the only way to try and save yourself from something worse is to correct the car that way with steering right but it was I also thought it was unusual.
