Showing up is half the battle. Finishing is just gravy. Congrats!
And you know… the retro riders are considered so good we’re put on the course at the same time as the elite racers 😂
This is how I remember racing was in the Early to late 90s.....I started racing in 1991 and quit in 2003 after seeing where the sport was going.... Loved the content!
What direction did it go? Thanks. It was a great day. Hope I can do it again this year.
@@MonkeyShred It became a "race" of Who had the most expensive equipment and got filled with people Who looked down on you in a classisist way(snobs) .
I'd watch, and cheer you on! Bit as for me I'll stick to my paved suburban streets! Kudos to you though for finishing. 🎉👍
This is Awesome! Letting the retro’s get some racing action!
Right with the Elite racers where we belong
dude super stoked and health kick is real for me love the content keep it up, cheers!!!!! from sunny southern california
Nice background track.
Nice race ✌️💪
I am participating with my specialized Stumpjumper 89’ at the vintage bike masters in september in davos/swiss. It will be my first ever bike race 🙈😂
I am soo excited 😊
Top work Monkey! Was a good day. Come to Malvern for some training.
Will do Tom!
Excellent, love a retro mtb
Don’t we all!
I love those stickers! Onza and Air-B for the win!
All styled by the previous owner!
I wish we had a race like this around here too. Great video!
well , old is gold .. love that retro mtb ❤
Yeah, they’re pretty cool.
Nice ride! Maybe hardtail next time? Also, don't look at it as a health kick, look at it as moving to a healthier lifestyle. Health kicks and diets are temporary, and then you're right back where you started; lifestyle is how you live. Enjoy your ride!
It was a great day. Planning on returning in September. You need to come ride the Malvern hills with us too.
Is that when the next one is scheduled? I hadn’t seen anything about it yet.
Hope it is going to be then

Deore DX with the older Deore II Thumbies is how we rolled back in the day (or with XT) those early STI systems were problematic after several months of abuse, I still have mine on my retro build, smooth & accurate as they were in 1989!, Great race and commentary as always
Thanks! I don’t think I’ve had too much trouble with the XT STi units of that time but the DX/LX I’ve used have definitely been a bit… off sometimes. Tumbles are great.
That was brill!
It was! Hard bloody work though 😂 I’ll have a easier bike to ride next time!
Such a cool looking day out, thanks for putting this vid together. Loved seeing all the old rides at the end, took me straight back to pouring over the pages of MBUK back in the 90s. Maybe I should come race my 95 Saracen at the next one 🤔
Well done! We need one of these races here in Northern California.
Surely that’s a perfect spot for it too! Near the ‘home’ of MTB.
@Jorge Gocobachi See if a good bike shop is interested in running one? This one is organised by one of the local shops with the support of Scott I believe.
@Jorge Gocobachi good luck!
So glad to see another video like this! I really want to try a retro XC race some day - it just looks like such fun.
The last route was a bit more fun. This one was gruelling fire roads 😂
@@MonkeyShred I'm not really a fan of fire roads either. Single track through the forest is ideal because of the soft dirt and the wonderful shade!
Congrats man 🥳🎉. Sick throwbacks 🤩🚲🔥👍🏽!
Cheers! Unfortunately I missed a couple of bikes. Hopefully I’ll get them all next time!
Nice work out there 🤙🏼 congratulations
Thanks 🤙
Fanstatic
Thanks!
Reminds me why i haven't built one of those thinking more of a specialized fsr for trails rn i have a 2011 giant revel 1 with everything upgraded on it and a 86 jamis dakota with beefy roller cam brakes just put some nos panaracers on it looks sick.
I do have a 95 S Works FSR in the works… a long… long term build
Offroad with a Vector.
To improve the ride quality, replace the suspension oil on the Vector with a lighter weight. Stock shock oil is 30wt. It needs to be sub 15wt. Probably 8 to 12 depending on rider weight.
There… is no oil. It’s an elastomer. The oil reservoir must be well hidden if there is one.
@@MonkeyShred You might be right. I think the Vector 2 had the Noleen ODS oil dampener. It would be the linkage that goes through the elastomers that holds the oil, but it would be obvious at that point.
you should take a sabbatical as a bike messenger for a couple of years, that'll getcha race fit, I did it for fifteen years.... thanks for featuring some of the other competitors steeds, some nice gems
NZ (rotorua) sorely needs a similar mtb retro race club scene
No worries. I think I missed 2 or 3 bikes though! Definitely missed another Orange and I think a Pace too 😩
Great job wish I could be there. So much I candy at the end. You should have a monkey shred sponsored vintage race and swap meet😎
I’m gutted I missed catching the Pace on film!
Yeah surprising how quickly you get unfit, it sure takes a lot longer to get fit again!
Doubt I would have made it all the way round once! 😂
It surprised me! I’m a lot better now though - dropped 5kg already! Hopefully I’ll be closer to 10 down for the next race 👌
Excellent, i Cannock get enough of those awesome bikes!
Ohhhhhhhhhh no he didn’t 😂
Ooooof!
That pro flex was a terrible choice for sure I would want an actual full suspension frame
I mean for 1992… this was cutting edge. Especially the Vector. That course is fine fully rigid though. Done that before a few times.
Impressed you found any mud to ride through?! Arid here in Wales atm!
Great work getting the Proflex on track 🙌🏻💪🏻
There was one huge puddle/ mud bath I kept going through the middle of 😂 turns out everyone else went around it.
@@MonkeyShred 😅
When was this and is there any more planned ? I have an old klein mantra but the frame is pretty much all that remains from std. I know a lot of people love to keep original but mine rides amazing. Probably wouldn't allow me in the retro group now though.
There isn’t any more announced at the moment but we would normally expect a summer, autumn and winter race.
What a blast. What's the cut off date for the bikes?
It used to be pre 95 but I think it moved to pre 98. Although it’s not really strictly adhered to 😅
How heavy is the Proflex with the Girvin forks on it? Couldn't have been one of the lighter bikes there!
Off the top of my head… no idea 😅 I’ll have to weigh it in and see.
