      I'm gonna have to try that 1. I modded an old valve spring compressor that has a hand crank wheel to depress the forcing screw, but it doesn't grab every arm just so. For $38.00, it's worth a shot!

    I'm always so particular about cleaning all the parts I'm working on that I had to smile when I saw Eric O diligently cleaning the rear glass and each reusable part in this wiper assembly. Also, the professionalism that he utilized by calling the customer to ASK if they wanted to have the actual wiper arm replaced due to the broken lock cover was super awesome. Nobody likes to show up to pick up their car and see parts missing from a job. He takes time to let the customer decide so there's no misunderstanding. I wish my mechanic did that. :-(

    My rear wiper motor seized as well and was drawing over 10 amps and quickly killed battery overnight. Rear wiper motor now disconnected and I can’t start a repair or replacement right now. I read elsewhere that this results in windshield washer pump to cease operation and I confirmed that today but fortunately the front wipers still operate. I can’t have that as winter is here in Ontario. Located a new one now just need a puller to get wiper arm off the motor spindle. WD-40 every day in the interim.
    This is an excellent video in every respect by a true professional willing to share his considerable skills.
    I had to do LH rear window hinge as well due to corrosion and the rear latch mechanism. The Ford engineers should be ashamed of their rear hatch mechanical designs.

      I unhooked my power supply to the rear wiper on my 2012 Escape and the battery did not continue to drain. Replaced the wiper motor, re-connected the power to it and the next day the battery wouldn’t start the car. Any ideas why would help me out!

    Thank you for sharing this video. My Escape back wiper arm seized up a week ago and for some reason was drawing power off the battery - broken switch maybe? All I needed was to find out how to disconnect the power source before getting to my mechanic for replacement. Because of your instructions I was able to take care of it in less than two minutes!

    • @redeux
      @redeux 5 лет назад +8

      looks like you got it fixed but for future reference anyone reading this if the wiper motor fails during a cycle then it will not be in a "parked" position. If it is not in a parked position then the motor will continually try to go back to park, but it can't get there so the end result is that it will just continue to drain the battery and the wiper motor itself will run hot. This happens even when the car is off. You can disconnect fuse 19 to temporarily prevent this while waiting to get it fixed though fuse 19 also controls your front windshield spray.

    The presentation was entertaining and very helpful, thanks!
    Additional suggestions:
    -to split the plastic motor clamshell inside the door, a penny is a good tool. Insert and twist.
    -before popping the plastic cover off the outside I poured hot water on it to soften, then carefully pried the sides apart with two hands before pulling outward. No damage.
    -The wiper arm can be popped off by squeezing with visegrips if you don’t have a puller. Put a screwdriver blade under the back of the arm, replace the small retaining nut on the threaded shaft end , and squeeze between these two. Alternately squeeze top and bottom of blade arm, many times The blade arm is jammed onto a tapered spline shaft, once cracked loose it slides right off. Do not waste time prying with a screwdriver between the arm and the delicate cosmetic cone beneath it.
    -the 22mm hex nut can be removed with a 7/8” box wrench (otherwise a deep 22mm socket)
    -the hex nut, once broken loose, may strip the plastic fine threads on the shaft, so it won’t unscrew, just spins in place. To get it off, I pushed a wooden hammer handle hard against the shaft end, into the glass, while turning the 7/8” box wrench, and it finally unscrewed
    -You need to get a NEW 22mm hex nut, Ford part #8L8Z-17481A, about $6.00, because the cruddy threads of the old nut will probably cross-thread the fine plastic threads on the new motor, ruining it. (Unless your hex nut came off clean as a whistle, not likely)

    Absolutely excellent video, professional in every respect. Just managed to pull wiper arm but having difficulty getting the outer nut off after 10 years of rust. The large outer nut Part 8L8Z 17481 A doesn’t come with replacement wiper motor and mine was rusted so badly it came off in pieces. Ford dealer had one in stock for $6.75 Cdn. He said that was second nut he sold today. I bought replacement wiper motor from R--Auto.com. Price and delivery to Canada was simply amazing, had it in 48 hours via FedEx, really unbelievable and half price of local parts store

    • @AceDublB
      @AceDublB 5 лет назад

      Answered my own question, sort of! After trying various size sockets and wrenches, both SAE and Metric I discovered that my outer nut was almost disintegrated and nothing much left of it after wire brushing and picking at it with some HF picks. $9.23 is cost of replacement nut from Ford on eBay! Yikes.
      Bye the way the big plastic dome shaped washer was split on mine too just like one shown. They must be designed that way.
      Just waiting for replacement motor to finish repair.

    Living in the Salt belt yall do best to leave the little cover off and put a little wd40 on it ever so often after a car wash and looks like they need to do that mare often too.. bought my 2010 in 2015 used have only used my rear wiper 2 times and didn't need to then just checking to see if it worked, just now having to replace the blade it just fell apart on it, thought I'd check out a little to do it right. Love your videos take care and live that wifey of your.

    the more videos of your I watch, the more I am glad I live in a salt free area. even though we get lots of snow, the state just lets it melt on its own (no salting or removal here). so a ten year old car still is mostly rust free.

    Sister owns a 2010 Escape with bad rear wiper motor. Like your video and only scary part is taking off the nut holding wiper. Just for curiosity, I checked EBay for that plastic cover. You can buy the cover for like $7 or the complete wiper & arm for $10. Forget Ford Motor Parts. The motor sells on EBay from $65 to $70. I do a lot of EBay shopping but also some from Amazon. I do find for some same products Amazon priced higher.

    Thankfully I live in California so I usually don't need to resort to pullers for wiper arms. In the few cases I have I actually just end up using one I have that's designed for battery terminals. Worked on everything so far. Just put a couple strips of painters tape down if you're worried about scratching up the glass.

    I realize this video is 5 years old, but I just happened to notice the rear wiper motor pivot nut was so badly corroded on my son's 2010 Ford Escape that the nut was literally disintegrating. So, while attempting to wrench the nut off, it did the same exact thing that this one did in your video and the plastic motor shaft threads came right off with the nut (thanks a bunch FoMoCo). So now, I'm forced to have to replace the entire motor with a new Motorcraft one, that's an additional $189 at today's price folks. I had already purchased a new pivot nut ($9.00), wiper arm cap ($6.40), wiper arm nut ($11.00), and wiper arm ($44.50). With the new motor, I'm now out-of-pocket a total of $260.00 for all new Motorcraft parts all because a damn nut rusted out. Anyway, I hope all these new parts will last the remaining life of this vehicle. This 2010 3.0L Limited Flex Fuel FWD vehicle was purchased used 5 years ago and has provided excellent service for those years and for a 13 year old vehicle with only 115,000 miles on it. I'm a subscriber of yours and thank you very much for your video.

    The same thing happened to me when loosening the large nut; the motor cracked so the nut just spun and didn't come off. Difference was that I couldn't pull the nut and broken part off the end of the shaft because the stub on the end of the shaft was as big as the threaded part the large nut was seized onto. After looking at the new motor's shaft end and seeing how it was smaller, I realized that when I pulled the wiper arm off, the metal insert in the plastic arm didn't come off with the arm. When the arm is manufactured the metal insert may be ultrasonically pressed on or molded in place. The wiper arm was seized so well that its metal insert stayed with the motor shaft instead of remaining as part of the wiper arm. I ended up using some torch heat (after shielding the glass and other bits) then quenching it to free the insert from the shaft. Then I was able to pull the nut assembly off the end of the motor shaft and complete the motor replacement. Of course I need a new wiper arm now.
    Funny thing, when the rear wiper motor is unplugged the front washer pump doesn't work. I had unplugged the rear wiper motor after it killed the battery while the vehicle was parked. I could hear the motor trying to move, then it seemed like a circuit breaker would trip. Then it would reset and the process repeats. Until the battery was dead. Clever design Ford.
    Thanks for posting your video, it was very helpful to see how it should go before tackling the repair.

    Question! My motor isn't broken, but has a terrible whine, loud enough you can hear it even when the car is driving on highway. Do you know any way of tearing it down and lubricating at appropriate places, or am I better off just replacing it/dealing with it? The video was easy enough to follow on removal, but without any idea of how to tear it down or what I should and should not mess with, I thought it best to leave it alone.

  • @LifeWulf
    @LifeWulf 3 года назад

    I literally only needed this video to show me how to remove that cap. Wasn’t sure if just ripping it off was the correct move. My rear wiper motor works fine, but it is loose and just hangs down below the window if it snows too much.
    If all I’m doing it tightening the arm nut, do I need the WD-40? I have no other need for it.

    There is a hook on the inside of the glass (to the left of the plastic container the wiper motor sits in) which connects to the wiper motor where the first 10mm nut is. Is that hook and metal plate part of the glass replacement? This broke off on my 2008 escape where it connects to the wiper motor so the window doesn't latch closed and can't find the thing anywhere. The glass assembly is over $300 so trying to make sure it has the piece I need. Thanks!

    One the worst things I want to add about the Rear Wiper (Same Year/Model). Is that if it can close? I guess is the term the circuit. It will keep trying killing your battery. So if your watching this video and don't want to risk breaking the glass and waiting on a mechanic. You might want to pull the fuse. I forget what fuse it was now but they were well labeled. Or else you will her a fine clicking sound of it trying to close the circuit even when the car is off / electronics is off.

    Is it just me, or do the newer vehicle's parts not last as long? I have an 2006 Focus and I've noticed (maybe just coincidence) most of the repairs that you do, are on 2010 and newer.

    Hahahaha......laughed my ass off......"Smells like an old man". I always hated the smell of that Castle glass cleaner.....reeks. When you said that, I cracked up laughing. When I worked for the county, they used that stuff exclusively and it has a distinct "stank" to it......puke....

    Hello eric o. Happy easter!!! Have you ever dealt with a cylinder 2 missfire in the new 3.6 penastar engines?

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  6 лет назад

      Yes and it involves pulling the head on 90% of them :)

      I need some advice. I took it to the dealer. They said it needed a new coil and 6 new plugs. I got the plugs, coil, and intake gaskets. Went home and installed them. No change. The miss is when its idling. Or sitting at a red light. I do not feel the miss when its going down the road. Does that sound like its in the cylinder head? If so should i take it back and have them perform a leak down test? They said i would have to pay 3 hrs labor to perform that test?

    What do you do if the main nut in the middle is rusted beyond getting it off with the 22 mm?

      Josh Jones - I would recommend you call a local locksmith. They are mostly mobile and as long as you can prove you own the car, they should be able to help you out. Be sure to tell them you don’t have a current key.

      see my other comment 10/17/2018. Briefly, push hard on motor shaft end with a hammer handle, into the glass, while turning the nut with a 7/8" box wrench

    I was using that same Crapsman ratchet last week on my son's '06 Escape while changing the rear shocks & the damn teeth on the ratchet gave out & my pinkie ended up losing some skin & the ratchet went flying across the garage.

      All of the Crapsman tools that I own were made in the USA. All of them are 25+ years old. Even my long Husky wrenches were made in the US.

    So the windshild washer fluid doesnt come out up front if u unhook the power to this back motor...ask me how i know lol.
    Wish u put this video out last year.
    My sisters arm was so corroded, it woukdnt home. Instead, the motor woukd keep trying and kill the battery. She took it to a shop(wth right?) They tell her she needs a new motor. Quote $350. She says leave it, she doesnt want it. They said they "cant". She said shes coming to ger it right now. They said they'll see what they can do. They charged her $100 to unplug the power to the back motor😒.
    So anyway. I finally get a call when she finds out her fluid isnt coming out up front anymore. Why didnt i check what they did first eric? Why? I coulda been done all zippy zap. No, instead i wanna go in after the damn windshild washer fluid motor smdh.
    Fastforward. I end up in the tail end, where i normally do. See that all they did was unhook one damn wire(WELL THERES UR PROBLEM LADY) and that was the only thing preventing fluid coming out?! U gotta be shitting me
    Coulda def. Used that wiper arm puller too lol. My repair? Well, do u wanna spend the money on a new motor? Its jjst the back window...who needs to see what u just left? She doesnt wanna pay for it. So i take it apart, break up corrosion, lube up the shaft, put it back together and ship. Tell her not to use the back wiper lol DONE
