- Durian season isn't quite over yet - in fact, August is said to be the best and cheapest time to indulge in your favourite Mao Shan Wang. CNA Lifestyle got a crash course on what to look out for when buying durians, courtesy of expert Kelvin Tan, "Chief Durian Officer" at durian retailer-cafe 99 Old Trees.

This 99 durian one is the best, like he said people choose the durian seller not the durian. This is one honest, good pricing and cheerful seller. Everytime I visit singapore I only buy from them.

In engineering terms, hairline cracks, refer to very thin line visible or non visible cracks that appear in any surface, metal, wood, plastics, etc.. Including fruits like he said, durians.

Most durian sellers cannot be trusted. Some would tell you if you choose yourself, they will not give you any guarantees. We are generally at the mercy of the sellers.
Got 1 tip someone told me years ago. His family owns a durian farm in Malaysia. He said if you do not see any ants or fly on the fruit and there are no worm holes don't buy because the pesticides has enter the fruit already.
I Wonder if Singaporeans can own durian plantations in Malaysia?
Hahaha. Pesticides!? On durian? Lol. Durian is a fruit tree that doesn’t need any of those. Unless u wanna harvest your durian fully ripe on it’s tree but nobody does that.

get rid of strong durian smell on fingers by washing underneath a durian's outer thorny husk with running water flowing down (hold stem on another hand) - it works amazingly!!!

Grandpa always said, if the fruit has bug holes it means its good and organic.
Another tip is - Choose by smelling a durian before eating. If it smells good, it also means its ripe. If the durian has been eaten by a Squirrel, that's the best bcoz squirrel knows best. If the durian has worms, it also means the durian doesn't have pesticides.

This durian used to be called Raja Kunyit before it was transformed to Musang King for commercial reason. Now it is something else altogether?

quite new to durians and I bought one but it's watery - I was told it should be creamy? Does that mean it is not yet ripe? or is it over ripe? anyone knows how to distinguish under/over ripe?

Luckily we have Malaysia to grow all the durians.
All good quality durians are sold to home consumers. So we in London only get the lower quality ones.

Its actually quite the opposite. The reason why you are not getting 'good' durian is because it's not fresh anymore. Best time to consume a durian is within 7 days after it drop naturally. However, it takes around a week to export to your country and another week in the fruit stall until you buy it. Another thing is that after you freeze it, it will get really wet and soggy , which is really can not be avoid if they are trying to export it ...

I dont think so. Most of best quality durian is from Malaysia as we have researcher who keep improving the quality (also have help from the government). Most that I found in the UK is the Thai variety. Most of Malaysian durian sells really fast to the neighbouring country and even China imports a lot (they are closer to be ship compared to Europe, hence still maintain the fruit integrity). I would suggest the frozen durian? I heard the have this high quality variety that use frozen snap technique to preserve the durian somewhere

As far as i know, singapore doesnt have durian orchard especially moashan wang @ musang king. Their durians was imported from malaysia and thailand.

T Howell from what I know, no we don’t have any durian orchards here in Singapore, yes all our durians are imported, mostly from malaysia. If you wanna get amazing durians here, try going to geylang, you’ll be spoilt for choice, and prices there are among the lowest

Musang King or Mao Shang Wang durian is originally from Malaysia. most MSW durian sold in Singapore came from state of Johor, Pahang & Kelantan

Not all pretty yellow are nice taste. I prefer the pale coloured ones with bitterness almost like wine. I do see some prefer bright yellow without flaws, those are normally sweeter and less creamy ... dont waste your time on those, you better go eat sweets or desserts cause you are not eating durians.

Does their durian taste of pesticide? Nowadays, many durians has a weird taste, where it makes my tongue slight numb. One bite and u will know it. Bcas of those weird taste, i stop buying for a long time.

That people think Musang King (貓山王) is best proves they have no great experience of durian. The best durian varieties come from Penang and Musang King doesn't even rate among most desired.
The best durian varieties come from century old durians trees in orang asli jungles on hills... One state cannot possibly have the best durian varieties, moreover a developed state which durians are harvested from a mass production orchard.
@@alextai2121You just gave the answer. Musang King is the most planted and harvested. In Penang most durian come from the hills and not managed orchards so, yes, one state can have the best varieties compared to single-crop Musang King. Also, look to the topography of Penang island, mostly steep hillsides and government reserve.
@@scottloar Bear in mind that that Titiwangsa Range stretches far and wide across multiple states compared to the hills of an Island. Its forest and jungles are centuries old as well and home to many orang asli tribes. The best durian can be anywhere in Malaysia, as long as it's a good wild species which century old trees. I would agree with you that Musang King is just plain average, along with all the D-XXX cultivars and overpriced but you cannot deny that the taste/texture of cultivars is consistent, compared to the deep jungle wild durians.
@@alextai2121 I won't argue that in the wild youcan get very good and very bad durian. We both agree Musang King is just barely average in taste and outrageously expensive. Also, when I visit sellers in the hills they always have samples of different varieties ( 紅蝦，小葫蘆，等) to taste. Their durian are good and some keep apiaries as well for real jungle honey.
Those which you mentioned are cultivars, which are the clones, planted by the land owners decades back, now being sold at exorbitant prices in Penang. Gotta give props for good marketing as well. Is it hyped? Maybe, maybe not. I will have to find out myself. But at the moment, the best ones I have eaten have all been jungle durians, not one cultivar has been as satisfying/interesting in terms of taste, texture and fragrance. Not even close.
The best tip would be is to know how is it harvested. If it is dropped directly from tree to ground that’ll give a weird taste (something like a beer) and thats what u wanna avoid. But stalls likes this seems to be selling some quality fruits. Ps. It’s fruiting season of durian here in Philippines as well

Singaporean should help Pahang farmer. The Mao Shan Wang tree are being cut down, make farmers poorer, Elite are taking over their durian trees. As a social responsibility person, should stop eat Mao Shan Wang, make the demand drop. That will help those farmers.

1st durian he opened, thats no really good(breed) . not fit the fame. maybe malaysia give easy mark and trophy. i can say it nearly 8/10.best place to find is Kelantan, its origin. search for F2 breed. if u find more, travel more u may know i am telling the truth

The interviewer should brush up on her wokefulness. Double entendres with the opp sex are not appropriate in this day and age, especially in a professional capacity, let alone a televised interview. Can see the durian towkay was trying to stay focused on the topic despite the interviewer's persistent suggestive asides.
