This is the game that not only eliminated the Raiders from the playoffs but John Madden said he knew he was done as a coach. When Gerald Small intercepted Stabler for the last score, Madden was on the sidelines clutching his stomach from ulcers. He told Al Davis after the next week's game, a Raider win at home against Minnesota, that he was done. Davis said to give it a month. A month later Madden said, "Al, I'm sure."

Many on the Raiders were feeling their age at this point. Stabler had taken such a beating over the years. A year later in '79 he was getting sacked every 4th play it seemed. I remember when you had to patiently wait to come home from school and read the sports section of the paper to find out if what was rumored for weeks had finally come true. (On any sports rumor or prediction).
Stabler dealing with personal issues here. Seems evident he had off the field stuff weighing on him.
His knees and back not right. Not moving with ease like he did year prior.

Outstanding quality. I was just 8 years old when this game was played locally in Miami, yet not televised because the sellout occurred too close to kickoff. Plus, it was my older sister's 10th birthday. I remember the stats. Larry Gordon had three picks and blocked the only Oakland extra-point attempt, and Gerald Small had two more interceptions. However, this is the only televised segment of the game I've ever seen. Please notify us if you ever gain access to the rest of the game-a 23-6 Miami stomping of the Raiders!

This is great ! It’s also nice to hear two announcers that are focused on the game and not bloviating statistics and trivial bs like Troy ache-man. It’s a nice break from the never ending graphics and constant sideline bimbo reports that we’re bombarded with today which also equates to much less instant replays.

A loss at home to the Chargers in a somewhat controversial fashion (Yet the Raiders won a game in San Diego in week 2 that was mind boggling and stunning).
      Swept by the Broncos.
Swept by the Seahawks, a third-year franchise at that time (would also get swept by the Seahawks in 1979).
3-5 in a division that season where in years past they owned.
John Madden's final season as head coach.
Beat the Broncos and the Seahawks at least one each and they're in the playoffs.
