Conan's show has an amazing talent for making some of the best comedians in the world sound like they're bombing...
TV does that.
Nx Doyle idk if it’s purely TV. Anything live at the Apollo is incredibly solid.
You misspelled "over-rated", it isn't spelled "b-e-s-t".
I dunno if its Conans fault. He brings in great talent. The crowd just didn't get it. Was this filmed in LA? Feels like a typical dumb LA crowd. No offense.
@@jaredknapp6832 and those guys were from Los Angeles
weak crowd, james acaster is amazing
Peter Comedy Videos He has a strong accent and many Americans are still not used to British humor (I know humour is international but when I watch British comedians I have to put on my British cap and think British because it's a different tempo and energy).
no im right and everyone else is wrong on everything ever
I was laughing at him way harder than the audience was. First time I've heard the guy too
The Infidel Monty python aren't really typical British humour though, Monty python are in a category of their own really
I know!! I nearly wet myself watching this it was so funny. I think it's that they don't really do that surrealist/ random comedy across the pond
One of my absolute favorite British comics. Incredibly underrated.
Anumey Sharma not really underrated he has been nominated like four times for ed fringe
Nominated 5 times :)
True, but he's underrated here in the States, or at least underexposed. Then again, most people here don't even know who Frankie Boyle is, so there ya go...
agreed! always kills it on MTW
Nancy Lyles True.
anyone else here watching this after finding out James was holding in diarrhoea this whole routine? He shat himself straight after he got off stage
WHAT
@@k_tara you heard
Yep. It's why I came here
IS THAT WHY HE WAS LEANING SO FAR BACK?! LMAO i was like, I know he does that sometimes but this...this seems different
That’s why I’m here too!
James Acaster commented on this performance:
“I did the Conan O’Brien show in America in June and felt the audience wasn’t giving much. I thought I looked like an amateur and started to think the good gigs were just flukes. I felt this wasn’t making me happy and I wanted to quit.” :(
That's so sad. Imposter syndrome is horrible but must be absolutely awful if you're on stage in front of an audience.
@@BOABModels Yes, it’s very insidious. What’s crazy is at this point he had been nominated for Best Show at the Fringe like 5 times, and he was still able to struggle with it.
And yet I come back and watch this performance over and over again because it's so good!
well, the audience was beneath him... i mean, it's wrong in any performance to blame the audience, but good lord these people were dormant. James Acaster is frikkin funny.
That's absolutely depressing. This is one of the best short set I've ever seen. Incredibly clever and great delivery (doesn't hurt that anything this man does or say is immediately funny).
God damn I love these -apricots- peaches.
Henry Ambrose if you know you know
i think thats a winston churchill quote
we will fight them on the beaches
Brilliant
when i say i WHEEZED
Be good to him America.. he's a very special boy.
I saw this comment when you first posted it, and as I've watched his popularity grow over here (largely due to the Netflix release) this line always comes to mind. So thanks for that!
hes a goddamn national treasure
Was he infront of like everyone on suicide watch or something? He was amazing and they gave such little reaction
I think it's hard to get in touch with his body language which is rather "unique". Might be why people are so slow at reacting.
It's because they're Americans.
They're American, his humour is very British
I have a feeling half the audience responded to his initial comments with, "British people and apricots? That's a stereotype? Huh. Didn't know that. He keeps talking about them. Must be true." They mistook an absurdist comedian for an observationist comedian.
Have you maybe considered, just maybe... He's not funny?
is this when he almost shat himself
Yeah, I believe so. His skin his looking quite sweaty and wet. By the way, I almost liked your comment but it was on 69, and I just couldn’t bring myself to do it...
Cat Arya D i wrote this comment after listening to the podcast, but then I read it in perfect sound whatever and feel a bit bad. it was a really no pun intended shitty moment for him.
eden yeah. But still, he powered on and had a pretty good set.
Cat Arya D perhaps, but the stuff afterwards with his agent dude,, that got me fucked up
Nathan H ‘Off the Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster’
that audience didn't deserve James Acaster...
Lets be fair here, this is by no means even remotely close to even decent material for him.
Yeah agreed, he should have ran with the cheese grater material, Americans might have understood at least half of what he was saying.
ya they deserved someone funny
^i guarantee these are all offended men triggered by his man and racist jokes
Yup. And if I’m honest I laugh harder every time I hear it again. It’s probably the funniest joke ever told!
Went back to this after reading his book and man, the guy's a legend for staying so on brand despite everything
2:09 I was concerned that it was all coming out
I actually had no knowledge he had a book, thanks for posting it. Just bought them, been binging his comedy the last few weeks and the guy is hilarious.
Excellent comic, poor crowd.
Paul Allen anytime i see a Brutus stand-up comic on a late night talk show doing a routine the crowd is always bad
None of them could get a reservation at Dorcia
Hey Paul
@@madmarx9539 let's see James acasters business card
Fun fact, after this recording James went for a steak dinner in a fancy restaurant and shat himself.
He does this story in his special now
not in that order
He's great on Mock the Week.
True.
_"The topic is Britain."_
*_"I wish I was Mexican"_*
I am about to go and find that bit right now - it's one of my absolute faves :)
Yeah, but that whole show is amazing as well. Not even British and laugh just about as hard
God i love those peaches. :D
Here after the Off Menu episode... And he does have a glassy far away look to his eyes 😂
His skin is looking kinda dewy. Also, it looks like he’s trying to keep his hand near his stomach or his butt
Which episode is it?
Magalie Batterie episode 47 with Ronny Chieng
@@cataryad661 well, that was quick, thank you
Hello fellow Seth Myther fans... pleasure to meet up here.
I like the way his brain works
Yes....I love the thing in his head..he's special
He can joke about apricots all he wants, but god damn, I love these peaches...
You stole that line from Churchill.
Stop plagiarising Churchill
@@ChrisFineganTunes No, he didn't (true) Now, go find the joke.... It's clever, and half-made at the same time ;-)
Best I've seen I a while. Very original bloke.
This is the first time I've seen this guy and I already love him, he's adorable. He reminds me of rowan atkinson for some reason, maybe because he's English...
probably because he's English, but also because of some of his mannerisms and his timing with his pauses and his quirky unique style of comedy.
Will be looking for more from him in the future
Check out "James Acaster's Classic Scapes"; the dude's a walking comedy film. You won't be able to hear the word 'cabbage' again with out smiling.
4hm35319hd0h5 I'm definitely gonna check that out, Thanks!
check out Josh widdicombe's podcasts. he was a regular on them, where the cabbage reference is from
they share some awkwardness for sure, but i think that's about where the similarities end - either way, both are unique and amazing!
*draws random bike*
You know now that I'm rewatching it, you can kinda see the issue he was having in his movements.
Guess the audience can't figure out what language Acaster is speaking.
Is dull and unfunny a language? He seems very fluent.
dsef I’m gonna guess you’re american.
hes got quite a thick northamptonshire/east midlands accent, im from the same town as him and ive got the same accent, everyone speaks quite fast and with not a lot of articulation, it can genuinely be hard for non-british people to understand
He's one of my very favorite comedians, but I need to watch with subtitles. I think it's a combination of his thick accent and fast pace
@@saxrendell kettrin is weird. Weak weird in fact. On the plus side, if he were proper welly, I'd be the only one to understand him.
I watch a lot of UK comedy, and it's great to see some of these guys starting to get exposure in the US. Kudos to the Conan team for recognizing and booking people like James Acaster. Keep the Brits coming, guys...
Can’t wait for the day when James is a guest on the seat beside Conan or on the podcast. This crowd is horrific, we love you Acaster ❤️
You Americans better appreciate James Acaster! The mans a genius.
apparently half of us can't even understand him judging by the comments...
haha that could be a problem
the other half cant understand him either.
Nosaj I’m British and was at the taping of this show. I personally thought it was a weak performance.
I'm an American who appreciates him. I think he's hilarious.
James is up there as one of my favorite British comedians, his comedic style is so unique and his wit is razor sharp. He also dominates comedy panel type shows like Mock the week and WILTY
My favorite. James has been in my Top 5 working comedians for years now. Love his quirkiness and clever interweaving of ideas and asides. Very much his own thing
Love this guy. Glad his on Conan
Very funny. I loved the lonely punch part.
His cadence helps his delivery.
UK people commenting always forget that these talk show crowds are similar to Mock The Week crowds. These aren't comedy crowds, really. James would kill in America if he toured, no doubt. As a big British comedy fan, he's the one guy I'd feel most comfortable telling my American friends to watch (besides Jimmy Carr), knowing they'd find him funny.
I mean...Mock The Week is a comedy show...so it definitely has a comedy crowd lol
He always kills on Mock The Week so i guess it's more likely Americans don't really get his type of humour.
jimmy carr is a bigot who doesnt pay his taxes jsyk
@@saxrendell thats why Americans like him.
@@magicpowers 😂😂😂
This crowd was absolutely lost.. As an American, this is the best humor I've ever come across. THANK YOU FOR THIS
For the record I am commenting before even watching the clip. You had me at Apricot Routine. I'm already laughing and I haven't happen to hear of James Acaster before this.
Very refreshing type, keep it up!
Big shout-out to the point and topics of this particular appearance... much needed and well done!
I love James Acaster! Hope to see him in person some day.
Ep 47 of off menu sent me here and it’s added another depth to this. 😂
This performance was good watching it the first time. That said, knowing what I know now takes it from good to really great and definitely left me wanting more 😄
Wasn't expecting to see the scrapemaster on here!
Wouldn’t be surprised if there were some cabbages backstage
We're all here for the same reason...
He looks so unwell. I see people have already mentioned it, but yes he shat himself within 15 minutes of leaving the stage
Awful audience!
Not really just a different type of humour than they're used to.
They prefer the 'simple' jokes.
Lets be fair, the set wasnt particularly strong.
He's such a person. I love him.
James Acaster's going places.
So is hummus
Like the bathroom, right after this set.
his apricot routine worked much better in the uk
More people in the UK are ready to eat apricots.
@@DrDespicable I am prepared to eat the apricots IMMEDIATELY
@@DrDespicable people in America aren't as dried apricots as they think they are
Crowd is just in there for the A/C. It's hot out.
He did most of these jokes on Mock The Week and they absolutely SLAYED! For a second I thought maybe his material isn't as funny as I thought because of the lack of audience response but then the stuff I hadn't heard before, like that whole Dr Pepper segment, killed me! I can't believe the American audience made me doubt how funny Acaster is!
Here after he told Seth Meyers that he shat his pants 30 minutes after this
"Some of the jokes are sad" = Album title
Anyone here from the podcast looking to see how close James was to shitting himself through this show? 😂
Actually stopped the podcast to watch
Terry Ryder same!
I love people who move their eyebrows around a lot when they talk. I feel like people who do this or self-conscious about it but I think its awesome
Everyone in Kettering does that. Its the inbreeding.
James Acaster is amazing
I think the responses characterize the difference between American humor and British humor pretty well. For better or for worse, Americans have a low threshold for expression. A simple joke with a clear punchline, or one that has an edgy subject matter gets to them. But when you replace that with a mundane subject matter, like apricots, and a punchline that doesn't sound like one, it requires one more step of processing. I'm not saying Americans are dumb, just that American society's acceptance of freedom and ease of expression means that there is little social self censor or reflection before an emotion is expressed. The British on the other hand have had social pressure not to say everything that comes to mind, and so have to be a little smarter in their joke telling.
Implicit vs explicit punchlines.
Nice essay idiot. Nobody read it
@@technovikerness73 I did, and he was Bulgarian
@@Henry-gt2co who was Bulgarian? Btw are you a James acaster fan? Please join my James acaster fanclub in RUclips.
desiree martinez It’s a joke in the video that you’re commenting on ^^ Do you just not engage with anything and sit around slating folk?
That apricots bit was a gem
You can really see how he's refined the routine between this and his netflix routine!
Who else is here from the Seth Meyer interview? 😅😂
I love how he didn't finish his "ready to eat apricots" bit after he read the crowd
I love the fact that he shat himself within hours of this recording.
This guy is awesome.. I love the comedians who can have a conversation with their audience without it making it seem like a skit.. like this dude has got potential haha
Oh gosh his apricots! This time it was even more funny! Love James! 😘
My favorite comedian---made my day to see that he was on Conan :)
I am in love with James Acaster 😍 x.
Its a delightful act, thank you!!
James Acaster is a national treasure, how dare this audience not appreciate him
They just don't get him. It's his schtick to have a subject about one thing then completely change it to something weird that it's funny. He'll bang on about the most useless things like:
How the topic is about BRITAIN and he'd start of with how he wished he were Mexican
How the topic would be ADVENTURE and he'd talk about how a cheese grater is too dangerous and risky for him so you only ever use one side.
Or how the subject is a PARTY and he'd talk about how his girlfriend never appreciated his glow in the dark haunted house t-shirt.
I promise. It's funny
Remember the time he was talking about murder/jury duty and then tangented to massaging a partner and then spoke of a completely different jury duty/murder!!😂😂
Wow, it's almost like you just watched two RUclips clips of Mock the Week! It's uncanny. -.-
@@akshaybhagwat8841 i know this guy has literally just watched a james acaster on mock the week compilation and thinks he's analysing his whole character LMFAO
I love James Acaster, great comedian
Here after his appearance on Seth Meyers 😂😂
The way he ends performances is iconic.
An incredibly funny joke about apricots = audience almost silent.
A somewhat mediocre joke, for James at least, about a sugary soft drink = entirety of audience laugh
AMERICANS LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.
Lol, I'm a fan of James and the apricot bit was heavily weakened by his extended introduction of it.
He's really good. People are just used to jack Whitehall not someone smart lol
no, ducks
Vincent Hunter He started with the apricot bit, before the crowd could get warmed up to what he was all about. That's pretty normal for any comedy set. Aren't you Brits supposed to understand comedy better or something? That's all any of you are talking about.
In our defense, there are a lot more of us who regularly drink Dr. Pepper than ones who have had apricots.
Wow, I like this guy. Very different style, but some of his punchlines remind me of Hedberg.
I just saw his netflix special and he was amazing! I hope he comes to LA again.
Shocked how few laughs he was getting, this was a great routine
I love James Acaster.
Brilliant to see James on an American stage
American here - The first thing I saw from his was his Netflix "Repertoire" series of stand-up specials, and I thought all four were brilliant. Then I went down a RUclips rabbit hole to see his work on 8 out of 10 Cats/Does Countdown, Big Fat Quiz of the Year, Would I Lie to You, Bake Off, etc. He kills it every time.
I need to see Cold Lasagna Hate Myself 1999 and experience it
“solo punch, problem solved” i live my life like that
James Acaster is genius, hilarious, unique-this crowd of Americans aren’t quite there. Love him✌🏼❤️
Looks like a man struggling to hold a shart in
This dude is one of the best comedians right now imo.
"solo-punch, problem solved" one of my favourite quotes
anyone here from the seth meyers interview??
"It's definitely a man, no-one's arguing that"
Too good. His delivery was so good the crowd pretty much missed it.
"Well done, Susan..." ha!
I'm tipsy right now. This is hilarious. James Acaster is in my top 5 comedians this crowd doesn't understand how great he is.
“as soon as i open up dried apricots i am dried apricots”
I thought he was great, but he clearly didn't match with that crowd. This could have all been avoided with the aid of some sort of tinder-like app designed specifically for forming an ideal crowd/performer relationship. Sadly such an app does not yet exist, rendering my advice obsolete. Sad times.
We could develop it and call it Whimsier
To be fair though, there are apps that suggest events and bands/performers based on what you like so it kinda exists already.
Grossly underrated comment right here, folks. THUMB IT UP!
He's one of the most British comedians ever with his timing and mannerisms, something that many Americans don't gel with..
haha i read your comment in James Acasters voice.
Have you made it yet?
I saw this episode. When he shook his hand, Conan was laughing with him about how he never heard someone sign off like that before.
When I saw James Acaster in London I told my friend I thought he was like a young English Conan!
One of my favorite stand ups. Judging by the crowd I don’t think America gets him.
The more clips I see of him, the funnier he gets.
love this routine!
James Acaster - cheese grater -GENIUS!!
Acaster is one of the best out of the UK right now, this crowd clearly did not get his style. I feel he pandered to them a bit much as well.
Proud Bulgarian master race here. We are the worst, which makes us the best.
I am still waiting for my brain to work out if it was an insult or not what he did towards us. Please, help.
One of the absolute best comedians😂😂
First time seeing this guy, I laughed my ass off! Great jokes, thanks.
The audience isn’t laughing nearly as much as this guy deserves 😂😂
The colour of the shirt was pre planed, you know... just incase 😂
Underrated comment :D
