  • We spent a weekend in Llandudno, North Wales in late May 2024.
We walked up and around the Great Orme and walked along the coast to the nearby town of Conwy.
Please note, with regards to the Conway tunnel, it should say that it was the first underwater-"tube" road tunnel in Britain.

I had many holidays in Llandudno .My cousin had a caravan at on a farm at Llandulas near Llandudno and Colwyn Bay. That was in the 1950s ( yes I am that old ) .We would get the open top tram to travel into the town…..fabulous views. At that time there was a steamer that went from the end of the pier to either Douglas ,Isle of Man or round Puffin Island near Anglesey.I think it was called the St Tudno. When I was old enough I worked at the Grand Hotel as Assistant to the manager Mrs Carter. I loved being so close to the sea ,I loved to hear waves on the shore below my bedroom.
In the year King Charles was invested as Prince of Wales my husband and our young family were on holiday there, I remember the Royal yacht. Britannia being anchored in Llandudno bay all beautifully light up at night.Quite a sight.
    Very happy memories.

Before the Conwy tunnel opened in 1991 traffic was a nightmare in Conwy, I grew up in a village 3.5 miles from Conwy and the traffic jam on the very worst days in the summer would reach our village, all because the traffic was single lane passing through the town walls, the new expressway has been a godsend! My Dad was a train driver based at Llandudno Junction and always went to work on a motorbike so he could drive past the traffic jam! Conwy mountain is a stunning walk with amazing views and is no more strenuous than the Great Orme, the Little Orme is lovely too and Angel Bay is popular for going to watch the local seals, in the cooler months there can be dozens of them, they can also be seen on the Great Orme if you know where to look, basically from the toll booth after about half a mile there's a half mile section where if you look down into the little bays you sometimes see seals.

I went Bank Holiday weekend for the first time and will definitely go again when its quieter, as the tram was too busy.

You will love it, a word of warning, if you are eating on the pier or prom, be sure to take a brolly to eat under, those pesky gulls nicked the flake clean off my ice cream! 😮

I think you will find that the Mersey tunnel s which are underwater tunnels were built way before Conway tunnel. The Queensway tunnel was built in 1934 and the Kingsway tunnel in 1971 .

Thanks for this correction - apologies, I have unfortunately missed out the key word "tube" in my sentence in the video. It should say Conway tunnel was the first underwater tube road tunnel in Britain. I'll put a note in the description.
