Jr, been there done that with valve cover full of sludge. After two failures with engine clean products, loosened sludge wrecked tappers, and one plugged rod bearing, I decided to try something. I sacrificed a shop vac, sucked every bit of sludge and putty knife, put cover back on, then engine flush. Got another 100k out of it.

As an Australian it humours me to see Americans giving the 3.6 some crap. We do the same here in Australia and have nicknamed the engine "Rattletec" as they tend to rattle and tick like crazy when something is on the way out. We also make fun of them for chewing through chains and its not uncommon to be hated on when you suggest putting an exhaust on one (the sound can be a hit or miss). I for one like the engine and don't have anything bad to say since my daily which also serves as my project and weekend hills cruiser has the early version of the 3.6 and its still going strong at 270,000km (168,000miles). Though we do love and much prefer the Ecotec 3.8 (3800 series). And fun fact, our 3800 Commodores are RWD so you can do massive burnouts with them. Its a great bloody motor and you cant kill them. We nicknamed it "Ecojet", which seems fitting.
Love your channel man. I'm a Gen X and these are the kind of cars I like (Mustangs, Camaros, actual sports cars). Shows our difference in ages....I don't like most of the cars you do, but I still watch all the videos.
Its about time Car manufacturers went back to a Timing Belt instead of the unreliable chain that no manufacturer has a clue how to make a quality chain system.
With that much sludge, DO NOT use an engine cleaner to try to break it up. You run the risk of partially dissolving the sludge and the parts that remain sorta solid can and most likely will clog up your oil passages. You'll go from just a really dirty engine to wiped bearings really fast. The only real way to clean the engine is to pull it, disassemble it, and really deep clean it. You are already running a risk of passage being clogged right now from sludge build up. The reason why the dealership is suggesting an engine replacement is because it's cheaper than pulling and cleaning the old one with the risk that you don't get everything and still end up with a paper weight. Dude, seriously, don't half ass this or it'll make the beemer look like a walk in the park.
I got doing the timing chains in one down to 9 hours start to finish with a few breaks. Drop the whole power train out the bottom on the subframe. Lift the body up on a lift. You’ve got friends with em. Makes it so much easier and faster
Drain the oil, change the filter. Re fill with ATF. Start engine and run it at 2-3K rpm (DO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE) for about 5 full minutes. Let idle another 5 minutes, then run it at 2-3K again for another 5. Drain oil and change filter. Add lowest viscosity allowed Oil (i.e. 0w20) That *should* kill about 60% of the sludge. Change the oil &filter again in about 1000 miles, and from there out, change oil & filter often. As you said the "oil life monitor" does a pretty good job of running the oil past it's best life. I dont trust them AT ALL.

jr same engine as a holden commodore they are a nut buster to do timing chains in the car don't forget you need the cam locking tools for these engines good luck lots of energy drink and patience lol cheers from down under
This car sounds like a good candidate for a kerosene flush treatment. Drain the oil and change the filter, put in one quart of oil and the rest of the oil capacity in kerosene. Start the car and let it idle until it comes up to temperature. DO NOT REV. Once it is at temp, shut it off, drain it and replace the filter and then do it again. Repeat until it comes out clear. Use cheap filters for the process and then a quality filter once it is done. Good cheap way to get sludge out of the engine.
If sludge is the problem, I would try an oil change with the biggest oil filter you can find and a few quarts of ATF. Run it for a few miles, then change it with regular oil and another new filter.
As a former GM tech and a current GM parts manager, all I can say is I hope you go OEM on the parts, and replace everything when you're inside the engine. If you were in Michigan I could give you a deal on the parts, but once you add shipping it wouldn't be that great of a savings.

But I'm old an old-school mechanic.
Personally I don't EVER look to have something this new, (with over 100 different computer modules on it) unless I win the damb lottery !
AND MAYBE NOT EVEN THEN ! !
I've worked on some trucks with pretty bad sludge build up. one was on a F-150 with the 3.5 N/A and the guy who drove it for this paving company only did 2 oil changes in 80K miles. it was badd underneath the valve cover and we priced out an engine for it.
those are sharp wheels , love the way they looked on the drive home , the whole car still beats a BMW by a mile !
I love seeing these poorly cars. V6 engines are sorely underrated. When they work well they can be all you need and more
The v6s are for girls

JR the only person to wear T-shirts not like this and buy a car at the dealership not from dealer.
today's show was a "not" show.i watched it nevertheless
Jr, been there done that with valve cover full of sludge. After two failures with engine clean products, loosened sludge wrecked tappers, and one plugged rod bearing, I decided to try something. I sacrificed a shop vac, sucked every bit of sludge and putty knife, put cover back on, then engine flush. Got another 100k out of it.
This is going to be a fun car to work on. Will enjoy watching it come back to life.
you didnt show the pictures the dealer gave you of the sludge. Great video as always
I hate it when people don’t take care of their cars. It’s so disrespectful and it’s easy enough to do so there is no excuse. It’s not as if it costs a fortune to do either. Regular good quality oil changes and keep the coolant topped up. Simple! Cheap nasty tires as well. Why do that? It’s like asking an athlete to run the 400 meters with a diet of burgers, dehydrated, in a pair of crocs.
On the plus side it means you can find a bargain out there if the engine and turbos on cars that have them isn’t toast.
-narrow passages causes oil feeding issues
-all v6 engines including Toyota are a pain to replace the timing chain
-GM uses a cheaper plastic for its chain guides
I would love to see you put some royal purple in that thing to see how much sludge it can clean up
Beautiful camaro & what a good deal I can't wait to see it running with no xmas lights
The rear tire looks narrow for the wheel.
Love your channel man. I'm a Gen X and these are the kind of cars I like (Mustangs, Camaros, actual sports cars). Shows our difference in ages....I don't like most of the cars you do, but I still watch all the videos.
Finally can't wait for the next few episodes
Its about time Car manufacturers went back to a Timing Belt instead of the unreliable chain that no manufacturer has a clue how to make a quality chain system.
Awesome! Can’t wait for yet another project
You should convert the radio to the navigation screen model, depending on how complicated it is to do.
I do like the Camaro it has a little style of the first-gen cars and some new. Now on with the build. Ican't wait.
I got doing the timing chains in one down to 9 hours start to finish with a few breaks. Drop the whole power train out the bottom on the subframe. Lift the body up on a lift. You’ve got friends with em. Makes it so much easier and faster
I used Harry’s for the last four years. Love them. Love the Camero also.
Can’t wait to watch this project unfold, should be a good one. I’m sure J R has some ideas in mind.
So BMW to Chevy, out of the frying pan into the depths of hell.
If you haven't already, you should watch what Hoonigan is doing to their project Camaro. 6.6L coal roller. You might find this interesting.
I met a guy at a AM PM store, and while talking about his crappy truck he said when he went to repair the drivers side window he found a big bag of METH! He looked really happy, and HIGH!
My mum's 2010 VE Commodore SV6 with the LLT also needed her chains done last year, even though the car had only done 120,000km and serviced religiously at the Holden dealership.
Last video: if a car needs engine work I’ll never try and fix it I will 100% swap a new engine in. Proceeds to do engine work lol
I know youtubers can't control the ads that come up on their videos, but I just sat through an ad for Advanced Autoparts and that's borderline sacrilegious.
Might as well try and fix it rather than an engine swap. Why not? Worked great on the M6
just does video about how trying to fix the engine on the M6 was a bad idea and how going the new engine route is always the right way to go...annnnnnd Camaro..
At least with the Camaro you probably won’t need a full blown repair shop in your back yard and a line of credit on your house like you do with any BMW. Owned a few, never again
How in the world has JR purchased a vehicle that doesn't need a hood or trunk struts replaced
I like Harry's and have been a customer for many years. Well worth the cost and it's easy to re-order
Looks like you have a ton of fun ahead of you! Good luck!
Oh, so it’s an LLT 3.6. Love that lmao. Have the same engine in my CTS wagon. Oil changes every 5k it’s entire life!
Harry s Razor . Great Razors . Thanks for sponsoring JR . Also men’s
Mental Health. Awesome score on this John Ross .
Can't wait to watch this one!!
I love the Camaro. Can’t wait to see more videos on it. Nice buy J.R.
Good project. Good price. I bought a Cadillac that had a lot of issues and fixed it. Never run away from a project that offers great promise. I like when you stick to videos on buying cars that people have given up on and then fix them. Congratulations!
jr same engine as a holden commodore they are a nut buster to do timing chains in the car don't forget you need the cam locking tools for these engines good luck lots of energy drink and patience lol cheers from down under
So, did Harry's give you a script? That was really polished. If that's what it takes to keep you making videos I can deal with it. Love the channel.
Looks like a good buy, hope you can fix it easily.
Good cheap way to get sludge out of the engine.
my 80 RS had about half the HP
I've been using Harry's for years now. Good luck!! Happy Motoring!
Where is the 944?
V6 camaro? Damn son is your colt 1911 chambered for 9mm instead of 45ACP? LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Hoovie is on the history channel with his car show it so awesome
I thought for certain that wrench was going to be one of my missing 10mm's
