Hey guys, I just figured out a few things on how to use this awesome plugin: ( I use Sketchup Make 2016) 1. You first need to click on a straight line that has to be parallel to the red axis 2. Then click on the curve you want to bend along. 3. Then use one of the directional arrow buttons until the green wireframe looks about right ( in my case it was the down- button) If you don't find the right direction, it will give you a very weird result. 4. Hit enter
Hi Chris, thanks for the reply. Today it worked like a charm, don't know what the problem was yesterday...probably computer related or it was just a bad day :P. Thanks again :)
Good question...I'm pretty sure it could do a spiral staircase. The hardest part might be making the spiral line for it to follow. But once you figure that out manually or with a script, it should be very do-able.
Chris, this shape-bender plugin appears to be very cool and easy to use, but it isn't working for me for some reason. I've re-created exactly what you have on your tutorial on my mac. I create a line along the bottom of the component ramp, create a curved line about as long as the ramp, select the ramp group, click the shape-bender tool, BUT then I cannot select the line I drew along the bottom nor the curved one. Please advise
@@markolukanovic9866 I'm not confused just doesn't work for SketchUp 2021.Shape Bender needs and update for SketchUp 2021. Hopefully the author will do that soon.
IMPORTANT: If the cursor does not change after you've selected the object, probably your plugin is outdated. Remove the plugin and download it from the Extension Warehouse by going on the top menu, WINDOW -> EXTENSION WAREHOUSE. Search for "Shape Bender" and download it, if it does not do anything when you click Download, log in with any google account and retry. Hope this helps.
after activating the shape bender and selected my component, i cant clcik anything at all :( it says please select a line that lies on the red axis... pls i really need help

This could be developed into more professional tool to make roads with standardized inclinations on turns and slightly before and after them. Also transition spirals for highways could be included, but designers could include them in path themselves. Most challenging could be make system of roads from multiple branched path-lines. very complex.
yes but when you want to do unstraight lines from all sides I mean for example; if you have a curvey square model and you have columns are designed on the corners .. how to make a cylinder form ramp around this model??\ I looked for so many videos and still couldnt reach a result!
That sounds like it has detected the start and end points reversed. Try pressing the right/left or up/down arrow keys until you get the starts and ends to matchup. See if that helps.
I tried it with making my wall into a group and then selecting it, or exploding it and selecting the very bottom line, or drawing a line at the bottom of the wall and selecting it, or selecting both the line from the wall and the curved single line that I had made but nothing is working. Any suggestion? Thank you
this works great! one problem though, the curvy ramp I created somehow cannot fit perfectly with the wall - the curvature doesn't match. I don't understand why cuz the curve and the straight lines used to perform the shapebending action are exactly copied from the drawn objects. Any ideas?
Does it matter where the straight or curved line is placed? I'm getting some odd results, with the group/component remaining straight (albeit diagonal) but getting sent off to the side somewhere.
hi there, am having a problem, which ill try to describe as best as posible. At times when i finish selecting the bending object, tool icon and object line (as in the video tutorial), the final product is a weird projection which is doble the length of the the selected lines. trying to find a solution or understand better this tool i found out that the direction of the object i use a base (a simple road with a low and high side, as in the example vid) makes a difference ("+y" direction or "´y"), but here is the problem, lets say i wish to bend the road object into a line using the "+y" (the lower part of the road which i wanna "extrude is near the center, and the upper part goes to +y axis), when doing so the final result is not the simple line form i selected, its doble the length. But!, if i do the same exercise, only changing the direction of "-y" it works, only in the wrong road rising direction. Also tried spinning 180° the lines i wanna "extrude" before doing the exercise, but it doesn't work. I know all this is kinda hard to precesses, but, is there something extra you might not mentioned before, or extra information that could be usefull?. in any case, thanks in advance michael
I also noticed that you press a button to bend your shape, that button is not appearing on my sketchup program and everytime Im going to the plugin drop down folder and go to your folder. I had installed the latest version of the program. Do you think this is the problem? What's the version of your sketchup that you're using?
Thanks for your great video. I recently started using plugins on sketchup and Im also kinda amateur in using this program. I added your Plugin to my sketchup. Im trying to bend a wall with all its windows and openings but Im having a problem. Every time that I wanna activate the plugin it says "Please have a single group or Component to bend selected before activating the script."
So what if I have a really long board and I need it curved like a U down the middle so it essentially becomes a really long pipe cut in half. How would I do that with this plugin?
I have used shape bender last year adn it was wroking really good. even text was working. but now i have a new computer and when i use the plug in, the cursor does not change to the line selector, it looks like a standard windows cursor. whats going wrong?
Great plugin. Works great. Except when you have a texture applied to the object you are shaping. The texture loses it's mapping and just goes straight, not following object as it did before I started.
Hi Andrei, it does work on Win 7x64, that is what I run it on. It might be an installation error, or it might the SU version you are running on. I've tried to test it on 8 and 2013. If you delete it, and install the newest one from the extension warehouse you should be able to get it working. Let me know if that is not helping though.
Chris i downloaded your shape bender and its all fine untill i click the curved path it shows the starting and end points correctly but then the green skeleton of what the created path is gonna be is some weird zigzag shape that is situated somewhere inbetween the mock ramp and the curved path.. I can send u a picture of what i am talking about if ud like. NEED HELP!!! this seems like a great plugin i just cant figure it out
It's a shame that things needing to be bent MUST be along the ORIGINAL RED axis. And that the object has to be rotated onto it, as repositioning axis has no effect. Also seems to dislike objects with many vertical cuts in it to be arced inwards or outwards of the curve form. (IE; segmented sidewalk) It's a good plug in, but would be nice if it was more flexible. (Pardon the pun).
I can't select the component it shows some error saying"Please have a single group or component to bend selected before activating the script" also my installation is correct!

I just downloaded this plug in, it works just like you show until I hit the enter button, then nothing happens. I watched the video 10 times, followed your instructions, the grid lights up, shows start and end, but enter button just just seems to exit the application. Any ideas???
+Pete Laux Can you try it with the Ruby Console open? It might show some errors there. Also, if its a very complex object you are bending, then it can take a while. I bent a detailed corvette once and it took around 8 hours I think. So if SU is "frozen" then that means its processing. If its not frozen then yeah, that sounds like it crashed before attempting to make the bend. If there are any errors in the ruby console, paste them in a message here. Thanks!

@ChrisFullmer There is a helix tool plug in that can draw spirals, quite simple and nice.

The plugin does not work in the Skechup 2019. When you select a line nothing happens. Please update!
HungryHamster waiting for this update
@1000behymos from what I remember, i think you have to have the progressbar.rb in your plugins folder. i'm not sure but that is how i got it to work

No it doesn't, only works on SketchUp 2018 and older versions.

Amazing, it still works! Thank you Chris! :)

It is telling you that you are selecting more than one group or component. You should have it selected, then start the plugin.

Well, do you care to elaborate? It does work, exactly the way I show it. Did you want it to do something differently?
That sounds like it has detected the start and end points reversed. Try pressing the right/left or up/down arrow keys until you get the starts and ends to matchup. See if that helps.
