How Japan changed my Olympics training on worlds hardest indoor boulders 🇯🇵

- Toby’s Paris Olympic Games preparation continues with 3 weeks in Japan to explore some of the worlds best indoor bouldering and to put a winter of hard training to the test.
Tokyo - and B-Pump Ogikubo in particular - offers a combination of physical and technical boulders that are in a league of their own.
Home to the infamous ‘black tape’ boulders mostly set by Katsu and Tsukuru - 2 of the worlds leading setters - Toby gets to grips with the worlds hardest indoor grades.
Many of the hugely successful Japanese climbing team who have won countless World Cup, World Championship and Olympic medals call Tokyo - and B-Pump in particular - their home, including Yoshiyuki Ogata and Miho Nonaka to name a few.
Further sessions at Underground, Basecamp Tokyo, Pump 2 and Tomoa Narasaki’s & Akiyo Noguchi’s private wall were further excellent training opportunities.
Confidence was high going in to the trip… did it translate to easy tops of hard boulders?

Hey, thanks for watching. Please let me know if you like this style of video? 😊
Yes!
I love it
Totally awesome!
I enjoy it.
Yes! Definitely a good vibe, some voiceover over some climbing, and learning the bits of what makes bouldering in japan and in these gyms special!
imagine being them guys giving the advice to do a youth comp and then seeing this guy win the olympics lol
Real life Leonardo DiCaprio Pointing at Screen moment
"One of them told me i should try youth comps" is sooo out of pocket hahaha this was a great video Toby, good to see there are places with proper stupid hard problems out there
Savage 😂😂
I was humbled 😂
@@TobyClimbingand the man said “based on how I was climbing it was solid advice”. At least you got that English dry humor! 😜
And now toby has the gold medal, what this guy's face look when he know that? Haha
Funny looking how he won the Olympics now lol
This feels like a training arc where the protagonist hears about a far away land where the average person is stronger than their very strongest opponent and goes to experience life there
😂😂
"A few locals gave me some beta, demonstrating the problem actually wasn't that hard, it was mainly just me. One of them told me to try youth comps, and based on how I was climbing, it was solid advice"
Honestly one of the most entertaining climbing videos I have ever watched
Hahaha it was a very humbling experience 🤣 thank you!
It was fun to play the "count how many other pros you see" walking through the background in this video!
Bpump is like honey to a bee 🤣 everyone wants hard Boulders 🥊
Your commentary is ace!
Thanks!
I absolutely love this style of video. It's a digital diary. You can be proud of yourself for trying again and again. Not giving up isn't easy, and I'm sure you learned something that will help you continue to grow.
Thank you, I’m glad you liked the new style :D
wow, dont thank me for watching. this was probably the most enjoyable climbing video i have ever watched. seeing the process of one of the best indoor climber transition from strength and power training to training on hard boulders, being included in your thoughts, seeing the progression and trying super hard on crazy hard boulders, that is something very unique i have never seen. i truely appreciate the effort you put into that video on top of your strict training regimen. thank you for letting us be a part of your journey. you seem like a humble and chill guy, which makes it even more relatable. i wish you all the best in life and for the upcoming seasons. this video made me root for you :)
Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video and I looks forward to posting more content like this. I’ll try my best!!
facts
I don’t know if there’s anything more motivating in the world than watching this video of constant diligent trial and error and ample failure _after_ seeing Toby grab the gold medal in the Olympic Games. I don’t think so.
this is the fucking best vid ive watched in a while lmfao perfect timing too loved it
Haha thank you 🤩
I think the best bit about this video was the pacing, showing and explaining a few attempts, then the send attempt from the ground, with music, works really well
Thank you :D
just the casual Janja cameo
16:53 for those searching
@@thanh-thomasnguyen7969 thank you
23:32 kokoro fujii casually strolling b pump 🤣
6:50 Looks like Chaehyun Seo was there too
25:18 Janja 👑
He's a setter there
@@-masteryoda full Korean native team was there..well, everyone is always there
So awesome seeing the growth and progression on Japanese boulders. Also really interesting to have the insightful commentary over all the climbing footage. More of this please!!!
Thank you, crazy how different boulders are out in Japan compared to Europe. Stay tuned for more :)
Best indoor video in a while imo - always fascinating to see anyone at the top level struggle a bit as well, good reminder
Thank you, not everything is as smooth as it seems!
love the honesty in the tone, not hiding frustrations and talking about the badness of the holds as freely as you wish. super relatable and i really love watching you climb/learn from each attempt (: all the best for this season toby!
Thank you so much!
To that local Japanese climber, Toby didn't follow your advice to participate the youth competition, but went straight ahead to the Olympics game. By the way, he took the gold medel home 😂
23:34 Kokoro Fujii - the legend himself is casually wandering in the background of B-Pump lol
👀
adding to the sightings, chaehyun seo at 6:50 haha
Enjoying this style of video!
More to come!
This style is perfection. This is the first video on your channel ive watched and i was hooked. As many others have pointed out, everything from the pacing to the music and the monologues were done amazingly well. Please make more!
I know who im rooting for at the Olympics!
Really sick video, the commentary and editing made it really entertaining from front to back -- I felt a bit shocked when I realized that all 30min was up when it ended lol
Thank you! I will try to create some more content like this!!
I love how you can already see he has more confidence talking into the microphone compared to his first few videos! Great work and great video!
Thanks so much!
One of the best climbing videos I watched recently
Thank you!
So cool to see that after completing the savage slab with one beta, you were able to immediately do the other beta. Seems counterintuitive but it shows how much climbing is about mental commitment.
This video is insanely motivating
For sure, so many times a move feels impossible then you stick it once and all of a sudden it feels easy
Thank you for being so real about not feeling your best and having a not so great mindset. It’s reassuring to know that even the best in the world can have bad days or a bad mentality at some point. We know you’re strong and amazing Toby!
So Japanese are the only people who are allowed to say "thats a V2 in my gym" xD Great video and great climbing
😂😂
So cool that you show even “bad” or not perfect session, stay chill and focus dude 🤙
Thank you!!
Definitely refreshing to see how a elite climber can still grow so much during just a trip! Great documentation of everything and relaxing B-rolls of some views in japan😊
Thank you:)
Would've loved to see even more of your trip to Japan outside of bouldering! Love the content! It is also comforting to see someone even at your level struggle from time to time and getting back to form after keeping at it.
Thank you :D next time I’ll try to show more!
That jump into a no-hands piston squat was crazy impressive
Thanks 🔥🔥
Amazing quality! Wouldn't change a thing, keep them coming !
Thanks so much, more to come
This kid is pretty good he should try qualifying for the Olympics.
I loved the style of this video where you show us your failures and not purely the highlights!
Thank you 😊
Was good to see you compare the difference between UK vs Japan grading.
Thanks!
Toby, it was nice meeting you and your dad in Bpump. Your beginning summary of how hard but also skill based climbing in Bpump is right on the mark!
I am watching this after olympics and I see what you mean now, nice to see that training paid off❤
Huge congratulations yesterday, Toby!
Seeing you get really clean on the climbs that were shutting you down is extremely cool
Thank you :)
Still this is one of the best climbing videos I’ve ever watched.
Loved your commentary on this one 😅 keep it up
Thanks, I’ll do my best!
I feel like there is some comfort watching Toby, a fu*ing olympian struggling with boulders, but at the same time there is no excuse for me for not trying hard enough 😅😅
Thank you Toby for showing your process, and letting us in to see a bigger picture which involves that you fail and get frustrated sometimes.😅
the combination between the commentary and the video is exactly what this industry need imo, great stuff, hats off
The hole video blew my mind. 13:43 just wild! Tops of the black tape at 20:50 and light green at 24:45 were extra special moments. Your heel hooks are just mad👌. Voice over was top-notch.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
this is high quality content, brilliant stuff (also how I feel whenever i climb in any new gym)
Thank you :D
wow best climbing video i've ever seen, keep it up toby!
Thank you :D
That black one in the end. Dude, sick af. Great job. Cant wait to see you in comps this year. GL!
So satisfying to finally stick it 🤩 thank you!!
This got me so psyched for paris! Love the format!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
Oh this was great, just some pure climbing and seeing the process/commentary. Please more of these, love it
Thank you :)
Honestly one of the best climbing videos ive ever seen. ill definetely be looking out for your content from now i enjoyed it a lot! You can see the progression so nicely!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
I like Toby. Toby is humble and direct :)
Your great humor makes this one of the best climbing videos i have seen!
Incredible video Toby! Love the voice over, whole thing is impeccably put together
Thanks a lot 😆
Awesome video Toby, the format was excellent especially with your commentary overlapping and showing some of the travel on the side. Japan is such a beautiful place, and seeing the best climbers in the world getting humbled by bpump makes us mortals that much more confident! It was a pleasure meeting you at Ogikubo mate, was one of the highlights of my trip. All the best at the world cup this year!
It was great to see that you too can struggle and progress, this video is pure gold!
Thanks so much
This is indeed the best bouldering video I've ever seen. so addicting that I wanted to find more like this but failed. plz continue with this style!!
More to come :)
This is perhaps the best climbing video I've ever watched
best training video I've seen. psyched
Yess thanks 🤩
Super cool to have been at B-Pump on most of those days while you were filming and watching you and Ogata yoshiyuki projecting. Loved the video!
Thank you!!
I've only recently started watching your videos but am immediately wishing more top level athletes across other sports did similar format videos to yours. I find the insight into the training process, the mindset, and the perseverance in the face of constant, humbling, failures to be extremely refreshing. Largely thanks to social media, we're used to seeing people performing at their peak, in prime physical condition, but without understanding the process it takes to get to that level, and I think that people across a wide range sports and even in day-to-day life, could learn a lot from watching content like this. Love it!
impressive self-reflections for such a young guy Toby - respect!
First time I feel like I get a super indepth introduction to Japanese gym climbing. Good video!
Thank you, happy you enjoyed!
Honestly one of the best climbing videos I watched in a while. All the best for your journey towards the olympics! Gave me some good rout setting inspiration
I loved the in-depth analysis of the boulders and getting to see the progression! as a non-pro it is very cool to see pros climbing in the gym in the same way that the rest of us do
Love this video. Definitely gets me excited to visit the Japan gyms.
Pleasure watching such focused and hard training :D Simple yet effective editing with the grade clarification on each boulder, as it can be hard for viewers who aren't accustomed to the grading in Japanese gyms. Also i liked the chill but informative and insightful commentary, very good video, ty :D
Thank you :D
Yo, for me and the homies, this is everything we love to see and hear when it comes to gnar indoor bouldering videos! Thanks for this man and keep killing it 🤜
Aww Toby this was such a great watch, so happy to see you get progressively more comfortable with the routes there ❤️ love this style of video, looking forward to more ☺️ take care and happy Easter!
Thank you so much, happy Easter!
I've watched hundreds of videos on how to get better, from all the usual suspects, but I actually think this vid will make more difference than all the others. Just seeing how very hard and how consistently Toby tries is a real eye opener.
this was amazing to watch! i love doing climbing as a hobby and this makes me wanna visit japan even more now. thank you for sharing this toby and look forward to seeing you in the paris olympics!
Thank you, you should definitely visit if you get the chance!
This style of video is great, chill vibes. Lots to learn here as well :)
Thank you!
Sir - I'm typically never a fan of gym climbing videos and even less so with commentary over sessions. This was the easiest watch in my life. Hard to tell precisely what it is about the content that you're making, but it's a blast to watch. You're real as fk, and your personality bleeding through these videos is amazing. I think your brutal honesty coupled with the talent display makes you a unique watch. Hopefully you enjoy creating this content as much as we do viewing it, you're absolutely killing it.
Could not agree more
Super cool format of video! More of this please!!
Tried something new! Happy you enjoyed :D
This is so motivating! Seeing your struggle and then eventually overcoming those problemy... man we can see clearly why you made it to the top! Not giving up and continuing even in frustration
Great video. Fascinating seeing one of the world's very best climbers struggle so badly.
Really enjoyed this video Toby! Excellent storytelling and humour, but also relatable in the feeling of going to a new gym and not immediately getting on with it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, what I like the most about your videos is how honest you are about the process, the effort, the frustration as well as the happiness. It makes it a lot more interesting.
Sick video! Reminds me of getting shut down whenever I go to new gyms, getting used to the new style, and then coming back home and getting shut down again after forgetting the old style lmfao
🤣🤣
Amazing video! Thank your for sharing your process in Tokyo, seeing you going from the "elephant-style" to achieve some the hardest boulders of the gym was inspiring.
Hey man. Great work. Showing off your authentic self is super important as Magnus said. The wasabi (?) kicking your ass at 8:46 was funny
A good reminder for a noob that even when things are frustrating, trying hard is important!
Inspiring! Good narration as well!👍😄
Thank you, trying hard is always the most important 😎
Best climbing video I’ve seen in years. Can you please do more?
Thank you! More to come soon 😆
Awsome video Toby, this style of videos showing all the attempts and progression with the boulders is really insightful.
OMG this was such an amazing video!!!
Watching this as a young comp climber was so awesome, it was such an eye opener as I learned that it is ok to have off days/week, because you learn so much from it and come back stronger. Personally I struggle a lot when coming to this sort of things and excepting that is ok to have these type of day.
Love the idea of the video, the fails, the determination to pull through and the insight into the process! Gained yourself a supported for Paris mate, best of luck!
I’m happy you enjoyed. Thank you!
Really Nice video Toby, also showing the frustrating moments and learning from them
Thanks! 😆
You are the future of climbing, keep going!!
Thank you, I’ll do my best
Loved this video Toby. The commentary made the footage that much more compelling
Thank you :)
One of the best having a .. normal bouldering sesh 😂 feels funny to watch 😅 that red hold at 2:30 looks impossible to grab😮
Thank you 🤩
Really enjoyed this video. Currently recovering from an elbow tendinitis and this has got me incredibly psyched to go and climb again soon!
Another superb video Toby.
Your honesty about the fail attempts makes it all the more interesting and real.
Plus you don't whinge about the setting if you find it almost impossible... you just keep trying.
That's a good lesson for all of us.
Big congrats on that final dynamic Black problem.
Great to go home on that high!
Keep drinking the Yorkshire Tea...
Thank you, unlocking climbs after first struggling is always satisfying. Haha Yorkshire tea will forever be a part of my training 😉
@@TobyClimbing 👌😂
Such a cool video! I lived in Japan for a while and B-pump Ogikubo was one of the best gyms I've ever been to
It’s crazy in there!
I'm so happy for you that you managed to finish the dynamic black problem at the end, because I'm sure the movement sequence will haunt you for a long long time otherwise!
Yes me too, so many different movements in one boulder. Crazy 🤯
Great video loved it, can't wait to go back to Japan an do more indoors and out. Great work thanks.
Toby you’ve qualified for the olympics when others you compare yourself to haven’t, your a beast mate and never doubt yourself 🤜
Thank you!
Great video, awesome to see the process so close-up.
One of the best climbing videos out there! Very enjoyable to watch. Keep it up and best of luck in Paris!
What a great video to watch! Reminded me of the phrase 'Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration'. I’d thought Toby Robert’s was a genius but now I see all the hard work behind it. I now have new motivations for climbing and am thankful for it. Keep up the good work!
Loved this style of video! The commentary style is so natural and funny (in a good way)
Glad you enjoyed! :D
