I'm a Rossi fan, but Casey Stoner has more natural talent than most of the riders from the past 15 years. Fair play to walk away and be happy. Still reckon he would have had the measure of Marquez. His ability to go from pits to track and be on lap record pase straight away, was amazing. He rode the shit turning Ducati pretty well... even though it was fast. I wish he had stayed on in motogp...Stoner, Marquez, rossi, lorenzo, pedrosa, maverick, dovi, crutchlow, rinss, Miller, fabio... would have been amazing

Stoner has a natural, raw talent that appears in very few riders (Marc Marquez). I think Marc and Casey are the two best riders I have ever had the pleasure of watching but where Marc can handle the politics and the media, Stoner couldn't. Hard not to include Rossi in this list. In his youth he was second to none. I keep reminding myself that Rossi was well into his years when Stoner came along. Also, it must be considered that Rossi had to reinvent himself with ecu and tire changes.

@@Bob-Maplethorpe Reasonable point, but who did Rossi really have to beat in his younger days? The competition was average at best. Biaggi? Strong 250 rider, not much cop on the big stuff. Same for Capirossi. Gibernau was great one day and at the back of the field the next. It wasn't until the likes of Lorenzo and Stoner came along that Rossi had any real competition. And remember that Stoner is still the only Ducati champion, Rossi was absolutely horrendous on that bike. Rossi always had the benefit of the best bikes and the best crew chief. As you may gather I'm not much of a Rossi fan. I respect his abilities but I don't like his mind games, often dirty riding, and his tendency to be so two faced. Watching Marc and Casey has me on the edge of my seat, their styles are incredible to watch. Vale is just boring in comparison. (Obviously my personal opinion.) 😊

@@yup.4901 looking through the data and I wish that Casey was on a Honda in 2008. The 2007 season win was highly influenced by Casey being on Bridgestone tires. In 2008 Rossi won by a landslide, now on Bridgestones. After watching 2008 at Laguna I ask what would have happened if the Yamaha had even 5 kmph extra on the straight in those years. I agree that Casey was a master on that bike, mainly because he slid it so much to turn, as Marquez does. The Yamaha was a dog on the straight in those days and yet Rossi won, while besting Casey, Lorenzo and Pedrosa.
2008 Laguna shows that he is the best head to head racer I have ever seen, as he beat a guy who was far faster than he was. The Catalunya battle with Lorenzo suggested the same. I remember Lorenzo commenting that fighting with Rossi was hard because he thought so quickly.
On reflection I think I can say that Casey was the fastest rider of the lot, but he wasn't the best because he wasn't the most complete rider. On Yamahas I think Lorenzo would have bested Casey slightly, and Rossi was hands down better than Jorge.
This said, I think Marquez beats them all at his best.
As an aside. I went to Indianapolis in 2010 and noticed that Lorenzo was the rider who "sounded" different on the track. His throttle application was different than everyone.

The Ducati is not the fastest by 5 bike lengths per straight every year. Do you recall Hayden and Rossi Blowing by everyone on the straights? People conveniently treat that brand like the bike is exactly the same every year and I'm sorry it just isn't the case. They make improvements and mistakes like everyone else. I think Stoner is a master of bike set up and working around a bike that is not perfect (kind of like most endurance racers who share a bike) who knows maybe he did that some time in his career. People forget Rossi was a master at doing this during the race right before your eyes earlier in his career. You tweak the clock a little and it would have been an amazing 3 way heads up battle. But I agree with Joshua, To put it bluntly Stoner was the wrong color for Repsol Honda. The politics even without Marquez made him miserable. Take that out of the equation and at least the first year Stoner would have the measure of Marquez but after that first year Marquez perfected his style all bets are off. . . you know what I may retract that. What Rossi dished out to stoner at Laguna Seca is childsplay compared to what Marquez and Rossi escalated it to. I could see a slightly slower Marquez bombing up the inside of Stoner, interrupting one of those perfect slides like scratching a record.

For sure Stoner would have been challanging Marquez. However over the course of a season Marquez just seems to be much more like Rossi, mentally superior and incredibly smart about his racing in the long haul. Also doubt Stoner would have been suited to the changes with more and more "standardized" bikes. He allready openly disliked the CRT rules and standardized tyres. Stoner is my hero, and the fact that he is still being discussed 8 years on in a surprising amount of articles says something about his impact and the pure speed he had.

@@fretworka3596 Well yeah I think he made those comments after he quit, about the tyres so you might be right. And I don't think he had any trouble with Bridgestone but rather what Michelin did with theirs. It was a comment about the fact that the racing was so close to which he replied there's only one way that could happen, and that is because the tyres are wearing off too soon. If the tyres were good we would see what we have always seen in motorcycle racing, one man soaring off into the distance more than 50% of the races and winning by 10-30 seconds. The reason that isn't happening is because the tyres wear off so soon so everyone is holding back and waiting for someone to make the first move. I don't recall the exact comment or where I heard/saw it but it was definitely Stoner who said it and I don't remember it being a very positive comment.

If Stoner had not suffered illness and not retired, Marquez would not have joined Repsol Honda immediately. They would not have dumped Dani Pedrosa for a Moto 2 champion, so Pedrosa would have stayed for 2013 with Casey. Marquez would have had to make do with a Satellite Honda. He may have displaced Pedrosa in 2014 but Stoner would likely have beaten him. So basically, Marquez would have 2 less titles than he currently does. Then again, he would have had the benefit of riding alongside the great Casey Stoner and so now in 2022 may have been even better than he (Marquez) currently is.

You can't give a real reason for retiring if you don't know what that reason is, other than you're super fatigued and can hardly get out of bed some days. Stoner launches MotoGP attack on Rossi
      By Robert Grant
      August 15, 2012 - 3.43pm
Australia's MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner has launched a stinging attack on Italian icon Valentino Rossi following Rossi's move back to Yamaha.
Rossi will saddle up again with Yamaha after a failed campaign with Ducati, on which Stoner won his first world title before switching to Honda.
Stoner has accused Rossi of failing to ride the bike to its limits and castigated the multiple world champion and his Australian crew chief Jeremy Burgess for boasting they could produce a Ducati on which "any rider could win."
"They ate their words from day one," Stoner said on Wednesday.
"Jerry saying that it would take him 80 seconds to fix that bike and that it was a simple issue and now they have had almost two years and have not made any inroads.
"Valentino obviously doesn't want to push limits and ride a bike that is not perfect, he has admitted that.
"Obviously he doesn't want to put the effort in with Ducati."
In his most recent race Rossi was eighth and 10 seconds behind teammate Nicky Hayden when he crashed out of the US GP.
In his first stint with Yamaha - from 2004 to 2010 - Rossi won 46 races and four world titles.
In a stunning back-flip Rossi is walking away from a reported $A35 million deal at Ducati to take a pay cut to return to Yamaha.

Stoner would had huge problem with Marc's aggressive style plus HRC would support Marc's riding style.Stoner won Rossi because the Australian was a little bit faster.Stoner's weak point was takeovers. He fought Rossi's takeovers by being faster and getting away. But Stoner wasn't going to be able to get away from Marc.

    Casey...Marc??
    Casey is the best !!
MM93 is rough and untalented rider! !
All days start from Thursday until Saturday only like to crashes his bike so he can win on Sunday!!
Natural talent does like to crashing his bike super often like Marc...I disagree when people said Marc Marquez has Natural talent! !!
    Instead. ..
He has Natural Experimental on his bike so he can be a winner and a world champion! !
Jorge..Vale..Casey ..even Doohan they weren't like MM93 like to crashed many times to be a champion on Sunday!!
    I'm a big fan of Vale...but I love Stoner toooo☆☆☆☆☆....
    We are missing you Casey!!!...
Big hope you will back to race with Vale but that moment never came true! !

Rossi may be the goat but Casey was FASTER.... Maybe the question should be how would Marquez and the riders today would fair against Lawson , schwantz , Rainey ,DOOHAN and the other hard bastards ,.... on the bikes with no buttons.....Rossi proved he could win on one . Are today's riders as skilled as the two stroke magicians I doubt it.... yes the four strokes are faster but the electronic aids are riding the bike for them

He is still to date the ONLY one to win a World Title on the Ducati. All others have failed including Mr. Rossi. That there says a lot about his talent.

I think Marc is more consistent. However even after his first few championships he still never had the raw speed of Stoner. On his good days Stoner would destroy the field in such a miraculous way. I dont think Marc has this same level even on his best days

If Stoner were still racing, he would be complaining how rough and rude Marc Marquez rides. Also, the development of the Honda would made the bike unbridgeable by anyone else except Stoner himself, or maybe Marc Marquez…

No doubt stoner was a very good rider but I don’t believe he was as strong mentally as Rossi Lagoona was proof of that whether he would been able to do much more we will never know as he retired …

He was a good rider without a doubt but all this talk of superior talent??? Yes he was talented but no more than Lorenzo , Rossi, Marquez, etc he didn't win the intermediate class the 250s unlike most of his peers i mean Rossi was 125 , 250, 500 , 990, 800cc a 9 times world champion and has done it on 3 different manufacturers of bikes (Aprilia, Honda, Yamaha) ...Lorenzo won more ....marquez has won more when we talk about how good somebody is and was we have to look at something to judge them by a yard stick if you like so we have to consider there success...and really in the grand scheme of things he will go down as a really good fast motogp champion but the fastest most talented to ever throw a leg over a bike !!! Nope definitely not he is certainly very talented but not in the top 5 for me... i could name a multitude of former Gp riders that are as or more talented than stoner and there records back it up.

    • @chadwells7562

@@steve132d They very well might have run 3 bikes to keep Dani at that time, but they might not have necessarily had the resources to support all 3 like they would with only 2. So I don’t think they’d be keen to do it, and Pedrosa would’ve played 3rd fiddle to Casey and Marquez so he may not have been happy with it either. I wish we’d seen Dani at Yamaha near his peak, I think he’d have crushed it.
