Complex Carbs: Leafy greens, legumes, beans, and fruits (in moderation) = GOOD

Yes! Low-carb has never been no-carb. I've been eating moderately low-carb ever since I went on Atkins in about 1999. I eat a greater variety of vegetables than most vegetarians that I know, and I eat some fruits on occasion. I also eat dairy and meats of all types, and I do time-restricted eating most days (it's not hard at all; I eat brunch and dinner, and both are *substantial* meals). Cholesterol, triglycerides, HGBA1C, all are normal. I have PCOS and insulin resistance, so I have to eat moderately low-carb in order not to unbalance my hormones and/or develop diabetes.

I've been doing a low-carb dietary approach for about 5 years. I was able to reverse my pre-diabetes, lose weight, lower my triglycerides, get off of anti-depressants, and lower my blood pressure, all without prescription meds. I also changed my exercise habits and became more active, including regular cycling and skiing depending on the season. Recently I've relaxed my approach somewhat due to concerns about long-term effects of low-carb, including adverse metabolic effects that have been described by various people such as Dr. Mercola and others. I am currently 72 years old and I would describe myself as healthier than 90% of my peers, despite having some incipient atherosclerosis that was probably caused by my previous lifestyle. I appreciate the perspective of this video, because I think people become adherents to carnivore and keto dogma based on favorable results like mine, but without considering the potential downsides over the longer term. I don't advocate eating ice cream and junk food, but some fruit or veggies might be good for you once you've achieved better health and you can tolerate the insulin spikes that might occur with adding carbs back into the diet. Everyone is different, but I agree with Adam and I don't think carbs will kill you if you are metabolically flexible and fit, and you avoid highly processed junk.

Back in the 80s when I was marathon training we were told that we needed to eat lots of carbs for fuel. They even use to have pasta parties on the eve of an event. I loved pasta, and it became my go to food. Now I'm in my 70s and can barely run 3 miles without having to stop and walk a few times, I'm still eating a lot of carbs. With all the keto diets that get thrown at me, I've become paranoid that my addiction is bad for my health. I'm 5ft 11, and weigh about 175lbs, but I guess that doesn't mean good health.

I don't think this is one of your better videos Adam. I think it will just serve to confuse people. Reducing carbohydrates is never a bad thing if like most people your not an elite athelete. Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose during digestion. When there is an excess of glucose in the bloodstream, it can lead to various health issues, primarily associated with conditions like diabetes or hyperglycemia. 120 grammes of carbohydates per hour for several hours is not a good example of a healthy way to eat for the vast majority of the population, so is unhelpful to use as an example. Your thumbnail showing ice-cream leading to death and saying carbs are not going to kill you is also wrong. Eating too many ice-creams will actually kill you, through the diseases associated with insulin resistance such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, heart disease and many others.

I think he made it very clear that people consuming 120 carbs per hour were elite athletes. The majority of high level cyclists rely on carbs to fuel their rides and stay in higher heart rate zones for extended periods of time. Without them the dreaded "bonk" is going to make an appearance and that is something no cyclist wants to experience.

While I agree and have personal experience that carbs and intense physical exercise (cycling in my case) go hand-in-hand, the majority of people I know don't do any kind of exercise at all, but still have high carb diets. That's not going to work.

I think what you say is true, if We are healthy. I started my journey with a very low carb diet, almost Keto and I have lost almost 60Lbs. and improved my health from a Pre diabetic, to a normal healthy Person with fairly normal blood work numbers. I can now eat Carbs and some sugar once in a while and it has little effect on me. I mostly eat whole foods, little processed foods, Lots of proteins Vegetables, some fruit, and usually one meal a day, sometime two meals a day, this has worked great for me. I am 70 years old and in better shape now than when I was 40!

I see your point. I am a long distance cyclist and a cross country skier but also a carnivore. I don’t do high intensity workouts. However many older athletes I know still suffer from high carb related illnesses such as inflammation, bone density issues and chronic pain. How did our ancestors deal with carb loading in the ice age when only meat was available? Did that mean they were unable to do long intensity exercise such as tracking prey or running from dangerous situations?

The issue is gut damage thanks to the highly ultra processed foods, so it seems that carbs is bad, when it is not, so heal the gut, stay away from ultra processed foods and you're be fine.
