    Great review man. I worked with the /// team on the shoe for the last years and think you hit a lot of the points we wanted to achieve. Its definitely a new running experience and takes some runs to get the full potential. I think the range of the events the athletes pushed these on shows how much getting used to it will do. Looking forward to the full review!

      Stoked you found the channel! I normally give a lot of grief for companies taking a super long time getting a product to market, but I'm glad y'all spent the time to really dial this in and make it a special shoe!

    • @nikb972
      @nikb972 5 месяцев назад

      Exactly. You can have a lot of good ideas and insights, but in the end it's the process of dialing in the whole package with a lot of good feedback that takes time ... and I believe most good products take that long. Here it was just more obvious, because we decided to do a lot of the testing with big athletes in big races early on in the process to be as close to the real usecase as possible.@@ConversationalPace

    Been on a shoe journey after taking up running after my 50th birthday. Coming from the cycling world (28yr career) I appreciate the technicality of all these new shoes, and the in depth reviews Brett and Finn provide. It's also fun being completely new to something without any pre-formed opinions.
    I run road in Endorphin Speed 3's and tried on the Endorphin Edge but it didn't feel right. Then I tried on the Tecton X2, Agravic Speed and Speed Ultra, and Ultrafly. Of those I ended up running in the Speed Ultra and Ultrafly, and kept the Speed Ultra.
    I could feel the weight of the Ultrafly and despite the wide toe box my foot felt a little suffocated by the low volume and Vaporweave lining. The clear "toe bumper" also extends around to the ball of the foot and gave me bad blisters. Comfy step in, just not a fit for my foot.
    The Speed Ultra was, and still is, just weird. I can't walk normally in them still! My true to size fit is a 10, but in these I actually went down to a 9 and it's perfect. I found that heel lock was eliminated after getting the right fit and playing with lacing. On the trail, like I said, I don't have anything to compare it to but these are just super fun. Turnover is fast, grip is high, and they are light. Most importantly they are comfortable, fit my foot and I love the LSP midsole.
    If I had the funds and could justify two pair of trail shoes, the Agravic Speed would be awesome. they're crazy light, i'm sure they would be the rowdy brother to this shoe.

      Thanks for finding the channel and for watching! I can totally see myself coming to this shoe in the same way you did. It's funny how great this Speed Ultra is to run in, and how weird it feels to walk in. Terrex did a great job with these Agravic Speed and Speed Ultra models. Running in both currently, and they do really compliment each other well. Comparison and full review of both coming soon!

    I got the Agravic Speed Trail model, this shoe is the real deal: I also have the Kjerag, and the Speed Trail beats it. First things first: Size down 1/2size from the previous version or your normal size. US12.5@10oz 1/2oz more than kjerag, so very light. More toebox room than the kjerag, not overly narrow across the metatarsals as the kjerag is. More and softer cushion, with a rocker that helps forward propulsion and makes it more 'fun' to run in than the kjerag. 8mm drop vs 6, I'd prefer 6mm for steep downhills. Same ungusseted tongue (very unhappy about this!) as kjerag, but smaller gaps in ankle collar & upper to let rocks in. Laces that don't come undone, unlike kjerag. The TST is happier on smooth to moderate trails, but I did 3hours on steep fairly rocky singletrack yesterday with no serious complaints, no toe-banging or underfoot pains. Do use heel-lock to keep the heel stable. $40 cheaper than the kjerag!

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  4 месяца назад

      I never thought that the Agravic Speed would be a comparable comp to the Kjerag, but I think I agree with you on this!

    • @rmsrmsrmsrms
      @rmsrmsrmsrms 4 месяца назад +1

      @@ConversationalPace I wrote that comment after a 3hr run on less technical forest trails. After another 2hr run yesterday on a very rocky trail, I'll say they are not a great choice for that type of terrain -- not a matter of protection but not enough torsional rigidity for rockhopping for me, plus the softer stack and high drop become issues.

  • @JuneScapula
    @JuneScapula 5 месяцев назад +4

    Just got them last week and have 60k in mine and pretty much completely agree with your takes. I have to force myself to not use it all the time because it handles everything I throw at it so well and is so much fun. Some additional observations: It is grippier in muddy conditions than I thought, better than a Slab Genesis and a Slab Ultra FDH for example.
    The shoelaces are pretty special although mine got untied with a double knot which almost never happens but with these ones the lockdown didn’t change - definitely a pro and a con because lacing these up is, in typical adidas fashion, a pain in the ass.
    Half size down could be an option for some because it is important that the narrowing mid foot of the shoe aligns with the arch otherwise the famous arch blister could be a thing in the shoe.
    As a mid foot to forefoot striker most of the time I don’t have the running uphill sensation but landing further back I noticed that negative drop sensation, like a little bump you have to overcome. Will be interesting what the shoe does to the mechanics of people because it rewards landing further forward in a big way imo.
    Keep up the great work absolutely love it!

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  5 месяцев назад +2

      This is an awesome recap and I agree with all of this! Thanks for chiming in about the sizing too, as you're right not aligning with the arch could cause some big issues since it's so pronounced. I hadn't gotten to take it in very muddy conditions, but that's good to know!

I’m a 54 yo middle of the pack (on a good day) runner and I’m getting the same 20 secs per mile improvement you mentioned in the full review. Also super fun to run in and surprisingly stable and nimble even on steep technical terrain. And I’m also noticing better, faster recoveries for my workout and long runs. I think the answer to that question is going to be very much a personal preference with my recommendation being the one that feels the most comfortable on your feet and has the smallest chance or creating any foot issues, blisters, etc. For me that would likely be a road shoe like the Saucony Endorphin Speed, as that one just checks all the right boxes for me

    Very excited about this shoe that I've been waiting for Adidas to release for such a long while. Big fan of LSP on their road running shoes. About 80% of my weekly miles are on the road with the remainder on the trails, but I intend to make the ratio 70/30 or even more as time goes by and I believe these new Agravic Terrex shoes (Speed Ultra and Speed) will help me do that. Being in SoCal with desert-like conditions and mostly mild hills and smoothened and hard-packed dirt/gravel trails (unless I go out to the mountains), it seems these shoes are perfectly suited for such terrains.
    Kind of bummed that the men's Speed Ultra's release has been delayed until 4/29 on the Adidas site. I ordered it a full-size up in women's size and will see how it fits. Ordered the regular Speed as well. Glad to know that the Speed Ultra doesn't have a carbon plate/rods. I've had the NB SC Trail, Endorphin Edge, and Tecton X (tried the X2 and returned it right away) and while they were good shoes and enjoyed getting some good miles out of them, I've become convinced that carbon plates are just not necessary or are even a hindrance for the trails. I especially dislike the feel of carbon plates when going downhill. The landings on jumps tend to feel quite harsh, even with softer foams.
    Anyway, thanks for the review. I have a feeling that I'll like these very much. Seems like it'll be very good for road-to-trail excursions as well. I live in a very hilly neighborhood with asphalt and dirt trails crisscrossing each other in all directions, so a shoe that can handle both very well (which I found the NB SC Trail well suited for) will be a big plus.

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah I think that based off of everything you're searching for, this Speed Ultra checks a lot of the boxes! You definitely don't get that slappy carbon plate downhill feeling. Curious to hear your thoughts on the Agravic Speed when you get that as well!

    I'm a bit gutted with my experience in them. I ran two 10k runs on the same route with a mixture of broken steep downhill fireroad and regular road in them. I wasn't prepared for how lethally unstable they are on the broken fire road, and I've run ultras in the Saucony Endorphin Edge which got bad press for their instability. In fact I tried on my pair of Endorphin Edge after the second run in the agravic and they felt solidly planted and just as springy by comparison. I am a mid/forefoot striker having run in vibram fivefingers for about 7 years so I'm not sure whether it's me or the shoes. I'm baffled as to how narrow the scope of use cases for these shoes must be. Surely there are more than WStates and UTMB to take into account? . BTW I'm a 60Kg runner so maybe this plays into the experience in some way. I'm hoping they will bed in somewhat. Damn hype-cycles....I saw the Jester running in a pair of what looked like 10 year old Hokas at the finish of the Cocadona 250 yesterday (And I think the winner was wearing Huaraches sandals...) and it reminded me that the whole quiver and seasonal optimisation is mainly BS I need to simplify again instead of feeding into this nonsense

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  3 месяца назад +1

      Dang that's such a bummer to hear! It's got to be something with the shape of the shoe just not matching up with your foot the way it should. I'm about 60kg too and feel great on moderate technical terrain in this shoe. Better than the Endorphin Edge for me. To your point, Adidas designed this shoe with mostly Western States in mind, and it happened out to be good enough for UTMB for most of their pros. The initial concept was to try and make the perfect shoe for running downhill in on mellow terrain. The more people I hear from about this shoe, the more it is one of those love it or hate it type fits due to how specific everything about this shoe is. I think there's room in the space for shoes like this, but there absolutely still needs to be a (larger) market of shoes that are very well rounded, because you're right, a trail runner should be able to get by just fine with 1 or 2 pairs of shoes in their rotation and not 8

      I have tried it on in a store, but never run in it. This Agravic Speed Ultra is a totally different shoe being so much higher cushioned and having a really aggressive rocker. The Terrex Speed Ultra is much less cushioned and lower to the ground, which will help with more technical terrain giving you more ground feel. The X shape is putting me off a bit. a narrow midsection market the shoe lighter but it will reduce torsional stiffness.
    I have been waiting for a superblast for trails, with a bit more rockered heel section.
    I dunno if I should push the button on this one. Caldera 7 (hardly used these days), Speedland PG:GS and the awesome Trabuco Max 2 are the only trail shoes of 2023 that have survived my rotation. After I heard you say someone took the Bostons a lot on the trails I started to I take the Superblast on hard dry/wet trails with no larger stones.. really really good.
    Am not a Hoka fan (speedgoat 5 is a dead boring shoe IMHO, I use the GTX for hiking), but the Tectron 3 I have put high on the list for 2024, it will take until the fall unfortunately.
    Does the Agrivic beat the awesome allround Trabuco Max 2? , or should look at it as a predominant downhill shoe (I'm a lot in the alps)

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  5 месяцев назад

      I think that the Trabuco Max 2 and this Agravic Speed Ultra don't have a ton of overlap, as I feel much more comfortable at all day (or even multi day) pace in the TM2, whereas the Speed Ultra wants to go fast. They're both nice going downhill, but one edges the other out for me depending on the pace and effort I'm descending. Perhaps the upcoming Agravic speed will be more what you're looking for still having a Litestrike Pro midsole, but no plate, and built on the last of the Boston!

    Great review, I just purchased a pair but the right is 10grams heavier than the left I’m wondering whether I should exchange them for another pair, I’m a uk 10 - the left is 278 and the right 288 - nothing to worry about ?

      Personally, I wouldn't worry about. That's right on the edge of the acceptable limit, but in a UK 10 and for a trail shoe, I doubt that would be noticed. I also wouldn't have the patience to exchange them 😂

    Be interesting how this shoe will feel for hiking big inclines. As we saw it on all adidas athletes at UTMB, the rocker makes me feel it would feel weird hiking in it (might be a good test for the full review)

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  5 месяцев назад

      Yeah I will definitely take it on some steeper trails that necessitate more hiking. The one run I did that I had to hike some, it felt really strange, but maybe that's something I need to get used to and it's not a detriment to my uphill efficiency. More testing to come!

    Finally. Now THIS is a trail super shoe. You can tell by how unpleasant it is walking back to your car. 😺. That and it’s really fast. Good on downhills, as advertised. No issues on the uphills. I race road marathons in the Adios Pro 3, and this upper is almost as weird. Tongue pads will cure the lace bite. And I know I will eventually get a proper lockdown. Lightstrike Pro FTW. I know it can handle distance.

      I just did Desert Rats 50k in this. Perfect for this type of race. Nice and grippy on the rock slabs. A couple of near ankle rolls but nothing unusual. I did start to get a blister on right arch and had to stop to put on a bandaid, which worked. Likely not broken in sufficiently. I also anticipated a hot spot on the left toe and put on one of those rubber toe rings and no further trouble. Tongue pads did help getting a good lockdown. This will be my dry conditions race shoe. BTW I wore the Ultraflys through the airports on the way to/from the race (as a backup). It was perfect for that. 😉

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  4 месяца назад

      How much did you run in them before the race? You're right probably not broken in enough. So you chose these over the Ultrafly? Do you feel like that was the right call?

    How about vs the Asics Fujispeed 2? Thats quite a fast carbon plated trail shoe.

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  5 месяцев назад +1

      I haven't gotten to try the Fujispeed 2 out yet, but from what I've gathered from a few friends who have tried it, the Fujispeed 2 is going to be a little lower to the ground and more 'normal' feeling with the shape. Having run in FF Blast + foam shoes before, I have a hunch that this Agravic Speed Ultra is going to be a little more responsive. Now if Asics released a trail shoe with some FF Blast Turbo in it, that would be a different conversation!

    True to size or half down? I've seen both recommended

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  5 месяцев назад

      It's definitely a bubble shoe for sure. My pair is a 10, which is my regular size, and it's just a hair longer than what a true 10 would be. I would go down a half size if I was going to be training and racing for shorter and faster races (probably trail marathon or shorter) to have the additional lockdown. For the training and racing I'm currently doing (50km and up), I would stick with my regular size to have the room in the toe box that's comfortable for me.

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  5 месяцев назад +1

      That's one of the last shoes I haven't gotten to try out yet and would love to compare those two! Just based off what I know and have heard, the Vectiv Pro 2 is going to have a shorter and steeper rocker at the toe. Cushion wise, it'll probably be pretty close, as the dream foam is a close feel, but just a little firmer

    Would this be a "heel striker's" shoe??

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  4 месяца назад

      I found it almost hard to heel strike in because of how pronounced the rocker is in the heel. It throws you onto your midfoot so fast, I feel like it can either be awesome for a heel striker due to helping speed up the gait, or it would be awful because there isn't enough stability in the heel to properly absorb that impact. Could totally go either way though and it's hard to predict which way because it's such a unique feeling shoe.

      For me personally, it wouldn't be my first choice, because I don't love how this shoe feels when hiking. The Agravic Speed (on paper at least) seems like a more compelling choice. We are planning to review that model as well once our units arrive, so we'll be able to say more confidently what race it might be best suited for

    It somehow made it's way to my doorstep. 3 runs in:
    the best worst shoe, the worst best shoe, the best best shoe, the worst worst shoe.
    This shoe is 4 seasons in a day, it has multiple personality disorder.
    I needed to learn to run again, almost fell a few times especially on the straight.
    I had great legs after a fast run with a lot of steep uphill and downhill but lower backpain.. a first.
    I almost rolled my ankle 3 times in a run, I never roll my ankle, like ever..
    I have heal slip, I never have heel slip, again like ever..
    So far it seems to be a great shoe to go up and down, I am not decided on all in between.
    The upper is a plastic hot mess (I wish Asics could just release a superblast with a trail sole), its a mesh shoe but feels HOT, the heel is way worse than the Altra Mont Blanc, the heel section of the midsole/sole is just way too narrow.
    The shoe pushes you otr supinate, making ankle rolls more likely.
    Fit: seems to be long, might have been able to use 1/2 size down (which I never had to do with any shoe brand)
    For the rest it is awesome Adidas just shouldn't have listened to the Pro runners, they made the same mistake now which Pepsi and Coke made in the past.

      Thanks for your feedback! I've definitely had some hot and cold runs with this shoe, but not quite like this. So perhaps it'll depend on the day, but what's the 0-10 rating with 10 being the best shoe you've ever worn?

      @@ConversationalPace I seriously don’t know. The shoe feels very fast, but I don’t see it in my segment times, perhaps yet..
      I ran the same roads yesterday with the superblast and felt way more comfortable and was faster than the day before with similar HR
      since you mentioned someone running trails with the Boston 12, I started that as well but then with the superblasts
      This should could have been a 10 if the heel would be way wider, like the caldera, Speedland and the upper would have been good.

    • @ConversationalPace

    • @berry5954
      @berry5954 5 месяцев назад

      @@ConversationalPace I went home yesterday after 3k, muscles were tightening up. Switched to the speedlands, way more comfortable.
      But a few KM in you start feeling the weakness of the speedland in comparison, the rocker is missing.
      On the agravic there is no lock on the heel for an gaitor, which is somewhat stupid for a trail shoe. I assume Finn agrees.
      Not giving up on this shoes, there is too much coolness, will run it once or twice a week for the next weeks.
