Just started watching the channel, I’m an Utah local so it’s fun to hear my local trails discussed. I have ran in speedgoats for the last 10 years and loved em. I went from the 4 to the 6 and have been pretty happy, I do wish it was 10% softer. Another reason be quiver shoe I’ve been loving is the Merrill agility peak 5.
Glad you found the channel! You'll get some very accurate shoe recommendations with all the miles Finn logs in the Wasatch. It really does sound like that Merrell AP5 has converted quite a few speedgoat customers!
The Speedgoat was born (breech birth) and matured in fits and starts, evolving nobly into . . . The Merrell Agility Peak 5! The greatest Speedgoat of all. The “Speedgoat” 6 is but a distant echo.
@@keolatage Same, the heel lockdown is a problem for me too. I kind of solved it using the runners loop. But still, an issue I wish I didn't have to deal with. Everything else, superb.
Excellent review guys. Agree on all counts. I used the 6 for a leg of the Ouray 100 and it took a beating. Toe bumper is going away, ride was hard on the way down to Crystal Lake across Hayden Pass. The ride is firm to hard, don’t mind it at all. They bulldoze across most terrain. Bottom line to me is they feel somewhat built down to a price. They don’t compare to the quality of the NNormal range imo, which did all the other hard lifting at Ouray.
My first SG were the 3s and I loved them since the first run, I put around 1300km, and the midsole still had some life despite the upper issue and worn outsole 😅 I have a pair of 5s to use which I'm pretty excited. Let's see how the general public response to the 6s and hopefully Hoka can get it better for next version. Great talk!
Speedgoat 5’s stretched out so much for me, so haven’t gone near the 6. Any intention of doing the salomon s/lab Genesis? Absolutely phenomenal shoe. Keep up the great work guys 🤘🏼
Hoka had the perfect shoe in the EVO speedgoat and discontinued it for whatever reason they could of just updated the colorways a couple times a year and kept it around it would still be a top choice today. luckily the 5's are on discount and I was able to stock up. thanks guys! can't wait for the Tecton X3
If you like dense firm midsoles with no bounce, SG6 will be great, aside from that the midsole ruins an otherwise solid shoe imo. Def not a do it all shoe anymore, at least not this version. Great review!
Hey guys, thanks for another awesome discussion! How does the firm feel of this compare to the feel of the Jackal II? I like that feel but can’t get a good lockdown in it. I know it’s a much different stack. Love listening to your reviews!
They're both firm shoes, but for different reasons, which leads to two different feels of firmness. The Jackal feels firm due to lack of material under foot, which also feels like the little cushion there is bottoms out quickly. The SG6 is firm, but you never hit what feels like the ground, if thta makes sense. SG6 is definitely a roomier fit as well, being a bit wider of a shoe
Thanks for another conversation 27:56 !! I wish the Mafate speed 4 came in a wide model - the only reason I wear the speed goat is for that option…and I have loved the 5 on the PA trails, excited to try the 6 -
Running in the north east mountains and loving Speedgoat 5, even though the lacing can be problematic. I added Mafate Sleed 4 and I am not super crazy about the lockdown. Coming down the mountains on rocks and roots gets a bit tough with my feet shifting all around. Speedgoat 6 sounded almost perfect except the hard midsole!
Great collab as always, I always get hyped when a new CP shoe video is released. Wish they’d bring back the evo speedgoat, never had it but based on what everyone says it was the best of the speedgoat lineup. Tried the Speedgoat 4 but was way too narrow for me. Wonder why it seems like hokas moving away from what made everyone choose them over everything else. Excited to see what you guys have to say about the TX3 🤓
EVO SG definitely still one of my favorite shoes of all time. I have a super beat up pair that I just can't part ways with, even though I'll probably never run in it again 😅
I would be interested in a comparison with the Tomir 2, since that is also potentially an all purpose shoe that should do well on technical terrain. I have both and though I prefer the fit, the materials and the rocker of the Tomir, I loved the Speedgoat 6 because its superior stability and better traction. I have trouble on technical descents and the SG has been the shoe that has given me most confidence on those, whereas the Tomir 2 feels unstable due to the high stack height I think, as well as higher drop. I agree that the SG is not very cushioned, but that does add to the stability. For stability challenged runners, I do think that the SG is superior despite some of the limitations you highlighted.
You pretty much nailed the comparison! I also struggled with stability of the Tomir, and for me it was due to lack of security with the fit of the upper. The SG6 ended up being the much better technical shoe for me as well. I have a hunch though that if I transplanted the SG6 upper onto the Tomir 2 midsole and outsole, I would really enjoy that
Awesome review, always learn so much! What’s harder on the quads over longer efforts, really firm midsole or over striding downhills? How much does a softer midsole help save the legs assuming good running form? Trying to get a feel for how much midsole firmness affects stamina or whether it’s more of a personal comfort thing for the feet. Thanks guys, you rock!
Good running form is going to beat out any midsole foam you put under bad running form. There isn't a ton of studies on this, but from what I have noticed, if you can have efficient descending form in a soft shoe, that has always yielded the best results for me

Miss the days of Clifton foam with a vibram outsole. Altamesa 500 taking my one shoe quiver vote now. Although since I watch this channel I do own 12 shoes.
I find that the cushion of SG5 is not too soft but not too stiff, which is good for rugged terrain. I also like MS4, so bouncy but too unstable for tech terrain. I haven't tried SG6, but if it's way too stiff, I guess I should skip it :v Also, cant wait for Tecton X 3 review!
For people with haglund heels or pump bump the 6’s are a huge step back from the 5’s. Really hoping they don’t put structure in the Mafate 5’s. Please continue to review the heel counter in your videos 👌
Haha, yes, I have 12 pairs of shoes, and always still on the looks for something different! And most of the people on my runclub that are roadrunners have the speedgoat 5 as their do it all trailshoe!:-) have seen only 1 speedgoat 6 up to now!
It would be a positive in regards to durability. I bet it still feels pretty firm to start though, but you'll definitely have a higher chance of it breaking and feeling great 👍
I have the same exact durability issues as Finn with my SG6… toe bumper peeling off, plastic overlays delaminating and sidewall stitching coming loose. Only 60 miles on mine. Otherwise, love this shoe for long distance mountain running.
Curious if the plastic delam problems will compromise the shoe in any way or if it's just cosmetic. I had that happen to my Tecton X 2 and the shoe felt great still
In terms of this being a one shoe quiver, for most people most of the time - Yes. For obsessive trail junkies, not even close. FWIW the nearest I’ve come to the OSQ would be my Lone Peak 5s resoled with a Vibram Megagrip outsole…that looks like it won’t be necessary with the soon to come LP 9+ 🦄🏴👍😸⛰️
I made the questionable decision of only packing a pair of TNF Altamesa 500s for a 2 week trip to Chamonix and Swiss Alps earlier this summer. The stack was a little unstable on more technical trails and took some adapting, but I'm happy to report that the shoes didn't seem any worse for the experience. They might be more durable than you think.
@@ConversationalPace Ha! Yeah, they made the cut based only on the fact that all my other, more suitable shoes, smelled too bad to go in a suitcase. There was a bit of sketchiness (and I admittedly bought a pair of Scarpa shoes whiles I was there because of it), but they’re still going strong and have made me a TNF shoe evangelist
That's exactly how I feel about my 6s. One knee was hurting after a few trail runs and my legs were abnormally stiff and sore. Granted I can barrel down rocky trails in these with abandon...they're rock crushers! Hope they soften up!
I ran 300km in them out in Chamonix, safe to say they're cooked from a midsole/lug perspective. I did enjoy how light they felt, and they performed well on the technical terrain, but missed the OG cushioning.
If you compare it to the Tomir 2? How would the firmness stack up? I’ve run in all versions since the two but if it’s so firm I will wait for 7. Regarding the durability: my 3s delaminated after 13miles. But I got them replaced. The sole of the 5s was super comfortable and still is my go to shoe
I liked the SG5 and used it as my main training shoe the last couple months. I just picked up the SG6 and found it really harsh, not soft enough underfoot for me. Should I try the Mafate 4 then? OR MAYBE THE TECTON X3?!? Mwuahaha. I did also get the Speed Ultra after watching your video and do like it but haven’t gotten heel totally locked down so not sure about using it for my upcoming 50k.
This shoe line is so funny because it seems like it has the biggest fan base but they're always bad, people always complains about something 😂I liked the speedgoat 5, but the outsole went out so fast, now I feel like every Vibram outsole will fail for me haha I purchased the Salomon genesis and have 100+ miles and the outsole looks complete still, it's funny to see reviews putting that the outsole wears out quickly for that one when I even use it in concrete and it is still going haha
It just goes to show how different the experiences are going to be for everyone in these shoes. I found that the SG5 outsole held up much better than the SG6, when they're nearly the same. People have also complained about lack of durability in the Genesis outsole, when I also found that one to be fantastic
@@ConversationalPace yeah, also I was thinking that maybe I have improved my technique because those were my first trail running shoes, and maybe that's why the sole wore out faster 😅haha
I was surprised thay they didnt go for the Mach 6 midsole, but they have to find a way to differentiate the Mafate 6 i guess? The issue with the mafate is the weird rocker - its almost impossible to size them properly for long runs and not just catch your feet as you run.
Hot take: shoe companies should produce perfect neutral shoes and let runners adjust things like arch support with orthopedic insoles. Companies could develop special insoles ( as specialized has done for years) based on the amount of support you need = extra profit Might be a discussion item, or a separate podcast.
@@ConversationalPace probably… I’m just so done with the bloody arches in the shoes, all the stuff to stop people from pronating.. I don’t pronote a mm, this crap ruins good shoes (adidas speed ultra) and forces me to supinate. They should do it like specialized one neutral shoe, one standard insole, the possibility to by an insole with high arch support or a flat one. Speedland, NNormal should be the first to get this
I mean I wouldn't even really say that the arch in a shoe like the Speed Ultra is there to specifically reduce overpronation. It sounds to me like you just have a lower arch than the arch that many of these shoes design their arches around. I'd much rather get my arch shape from the shape of the midsole than an additional insert, as I don't like the stifness of aftermarket orthotics, and I don't love the feel of additional stack like that on top of the footbed. With that being said, I'm curious how On's new Cloudboom Strike feels and if they will incorporate that midsole/insole tech to future shoes.
@@ConversationalPace I did some measurements, according to ChatGPT I am Smackdown in the middle for average arch height (floor to sole), I just absolutely hate feeling anything there. Speed laces can be purchased and added to any shoes. I speed lace all of mine. Can’t stand the narrow toe box on European shoe brands like LaSportiva or Salamon.
I almost think this is the gateway shoe now to trail running. And yeah, sadly this price point is the entry point for trail now I think. (And yes my rotation is ridiculous 😂)
Speedgoat 6 is just not fun to run in and it is not a shoe for crushing long runs (unless you are Finn I guess and in some serious technical terrain). I keep saying it, but the Zegama 2 is everything people want/hope the Speedgoat to be. I think if I am running super technical terrain, I like the Kjerag far better.
Zegama 2 is definitely my new Speedgoat. Definitely was surprising to see how well this new SG was on super technical terrain, and I agree I still prefer a lower stack shoe for the most technical trails
@@ConversationalPace On a side note, have you checked out the new Freetrail podcast that was posted today -- featuring Megan and David Roche? Brett and CP got a big shout out.
@@ConversationalPace I took it for my vaccation, only walking, no running. And after 2 months, the outsole was almost completely flat, midsole was firm for walking on road and uncomfortable. Now i have Nike Zegama 2 and i think these are much better shoes. I can use it everywhere and good for running and walking. Outsole patttern although it is Vibram megagrip too, seems more durable.
@@Potomekopice Ahh I gotcha. That's frustrating. The Zegama outsole does seem to have quite a bit more surface area of rubber making contact with the ground, which would definitely help out with the daily use durability

The Jackal is firmer, mostly because there is hardly any foam under the forefoot. It's also quite a bit narrower than the SG6 as well
Speed laces can be purchased and added to any shoes. I speed lace all of mine. Can’t stand the narrow toe box on European shoe brands like LaSportiva or Salamon.
Do you have a favorite brand of speed lace?
I have been using the Nathan brand. I really like BOA dial system as well.
Merrell Agility Peak 5 is the new speedgoat.
You might be on to something!
I almost think this is the gateway shoe now to trail running. And yeah, sadly this price point is the entry point for trail now I think. (And yes my rotation is ridiculous 😂)
Wildhorse 8 you can regularly find for like $70
Agree with that! This is now the Hoka Cascadia 🤣
Can I run on road with this shoes ?
You definitely can, although I found this current version to be a little less smooth on the roads due to the firmer cushion
@@ConversationalPace thanks mate
More theories 😂
Prefer Tomir 2. It is a one quiver shoe.
Zegama 2/Kjerag is the ultimate 2 shoe quiver.
That is a baller combo
Too narrow for me as were the 5. 😝
ahh that's unfortunate 🥲
The SG is not for me anymore. Weird fit, stiff, dead feeling. Only good thing now is the outsole grip.
Yeah, such a shame!
I have Speedgoat 5 and i hate it so much. I dont understand, why would anyone wear them.
What about the shoes do you dislike?
