A bit of a different kind of video today! I thought it would be fun and a bit interesting for me to try talking during one of my painting time lapses instead of just having pure music like my normal videos. What do you guys think or prefer?
It's not being dumb, it's absolutely normal ! I think we've all been there. I personally scan all my sketches before painting them, that way even if they turn out not to good, I still have the original sketch
Don't forget to paint with watercolor just in appropriate paper! You will end up soaking and making holes in a normal paper if you try to watercolor it.
Hi! These are beautiful! One tip for doing darker skin tones, try using a light wash of orange or purple-blue ish (for an even darker skintone ) for an under tone. It can bring more life to the skin. 😊

Omg how do you leave those tiny stunning highlights behind without painting on them? I'm trying so hard and everytime I get a good highlight I destroy it later on by mistake 😂😭 ps. I adore your art SO much
You can use white ink/pens after you finish the painting OR use drawing gum (aka masking fluid) to cover the areas you want to protect. With gum, you just rub it off once the painting's dry! When using drawing gum, I suggest you put it on the paper before you start painting because I've noticed when you rub it off later, it lifts off any watercolor underneath. Also, wait for the gum to dry properly before painting (doesn't take too long) and if you don't get a drawing gum marker, you can always use brushes. To protect your brushes, wash them with soap before hand and don't rinse out the soap! Use them like that and then rinse them out again after use.
In my humble opinion, I find your voice relaxing. And lets face it, a mellow and relaxed mind is almost the very foundation of painting. I'm just starting my love for watercolor, and at 65 its better late than never! Your teaching is very easy to follow and makes me feel that even I can paint! Thank you so very much
Your mind blowing work is the reason why I started water coloring! I've seen quite a lot of watercolor related RUclips videos and your work most certainly shines through! As a suggestion, make a video on where to put highlights (or leaving dry spots) for different objects/materials since it's a quite delicate thing to master & is super important!
I’m so thankful that you painted somebody of color WITH AN AFRO!!! In general, you just don’t see many pocs in water color or portraits. Sadly my alma mater didn’t even teach how to paint people with darker tones. And many schools don’t so I just appreciate it so much! Thank you!!!

You make it look so easy :D I picked up watercolor this year and since I come from completely different mediums (oil and soft pastel) I had problems with taming the watercolor :D I accepted the fact that this probably is a battle I can't win so I'm now letting it be as it likes and am enjoying it a lot :)
Im the opposite! I've always been so much more comfortable with watercolor ... pastels and oils on the other hand, I went to art school and was terrified of it! 😂😂

I'm a 58 yr. old Mum and have drawn and painted my whole life but now, since I'm still loving art so much, its been made obvious to me that I should really develop my skills to a professional level. so your work matters to me. And i love your style and how gorgeous all of it is...loved the little boats in the waves birds eye view. Loved it. I used to be this prolific...then, somene said i should get a job and move out! So from that moment on, I had to hit the ground running and the work I had to get never left any time to do what I loved. I know alot of people feel this way. so...now that I've got one out of the hosue, (which by the way, I never wanted, he did!), I can take the time needed to practice and practice doing things in watercolor that I'd not thought of doing before. Do you think you will ever make smaller prints of your watercolor artworks that might be cheaper than the ones you have now? I've always wanted to purchase one of your watercolor prints, but they are too big for my limited wall space and being still in highschool, I have to ask my parents for money, and they aren't inclined to pay over 20 dollars for a piece of artwork (They are tech people). YES! I want to put out smaller works and I do apologize that right now the store only has larger & pricier works 😞 They were exhibition artworks so it didn't feel right to be shrinking them from their original sizes.

I clicked on this video because I’m paralyzed with fear to start a few big portraits! After watching your video though I’m feeling more confident and excited to try your technique!! You have such beautiful work, never stop making art!
It's just red+yellow=orange+white=flesh(for me I use flesh as a skin tone and u can add a little bit of blue for more depth) or if you want it reddish or something then just put a bit more red or if you want it to be more darker (darker shade for flesh) then use brown/blue :) If you don't know how to mix brown it's basically just all the primary colors but if you're failling to do it then here's a tip: What I usually do: red+yellow=orange+blue=brown Blue+yellow=green+red=brown What I sometimes fail to: (I think it's because I sometimes add too much blue or idrk) blue+red=purple/violet+yellow=brown
I use pink and yellow veery diluted for white skintones! But it totaly varies in the environment and the tone of the drawing. For example, sometimes I add a bit of purple/dark blue to make it more gray-ish and on the cool side, or more orange and brown for a tan. It's a matter of trying. Mix, add color, add different amounts of whater and just try it. And also, take notes from the proportions and what color you used, if you get it wright you might want to replicate it later.
It draws beautifully and quickly! When I edited the video with TimeLabs, I realized that I had too many strokes. But you do not touch the same place many times. It's amazing! It was nice to be able to see the diversity of pictures every time I changed the camera angle. It was a lot of learning to me. I do not paint with watercolors but draw with colored pencils. Your illustrations seem to have inspired me a lot. I look forward to a good video in the future. Sending a big kiss. Have a good day!

right now, my favourite brushes are the Kolinsky brushes from Trekell (the black ones you see in this video). they hold a great amount of water and pigment, so its easier for washes and big applications of paint. if you want to start out with watercolour, i highly recommend going for synthetic taklon brushes instead as they are a lot more affordable! I hope that helps!
@Jade Grant, it doesn’t matter at what age you start, it’s about how long you’ve drawn. Such as drawing daily for a year rather than painting every few times for years

Nice to have a reminder that the initial sketch of features dont have to be that defined at all since the values come in with the watercolor or other medium. Thanks for helping a beginner!
So, why do you start your skin tones around the eyes? Is just personal preference or something you were taught? Or is something other reason? I haven't done anything skin related before, if that helps at all.
I think it's just a personal preference. For me, at least, starting out with the eyes gives me a reference to gauge upon how detailed and how much I need to build upon to balance the face. Probably because the eyes are the natural center of focus
Just starting out on drawing portraits and using watercolors been at it for about a week found your video very very helpful I'm slowly layering and layering and layering and building up my colors thanks for the video man.
All this time I've been drawing with a pencil and too afraid to try and go into colors. I've watched so many video but this video right here I think just made me fall in love with water colors. I am an artist and I used to draw lot of stuff during school days and wanted to become a graphic designer. Things didn't worked the way I became an Engineer because people told me there is no career in art field. I was really feeling so jealous of you that you are having a career in this pleasant field. oh my goddard.. Using a crown pen for white highlights. brilliant. I am personally kind of stuck, since i'm an autodidact on what to do in certain situations. The white highlights were one of them until today. i tried white pencils, but you have to push those really hard in order to give off a clear white line, but that often results in breaking off the wips, and having to sharpen them again, and again and again. The softer pencils are hard to do a hard or sharp line with and end up looking blurry. This crown pen is golden. thanks for showing that !! (and the rest as well)

Great video ... 4 years old now but still very worth watching. Never worry about failure ... it's what keeps us striving. If we're not afraid we're not pushing hard enough and our work just becomes mediocre. Stay afraid and stay fresh.
personally i really like cakes, i used the sakura koi pocket field sketch 24 set it comes with a waterbrush which i find very helpful, for tubes reeves is pretty basic and decent :)
Could be a bunch of things. - do you let things dry completely before working on the next layer? - is your paint prone to lifting? - do you scrub or work heavily on the page? - do you put paint down too thickly? I hope you can figure it out.
you should wait for your first layer to dry and then put your next layer on top. If thats not the problem, it may be the materials you use, e.g. paper, brush, paint

Whenever I add another layer after one dries, the paint always lifts up in at least one area and leaves a big splotch of white where the paper under is showing. I tried lifting excess watter thinking that it is caused by excess pooling but it seems like no matter what I do, the layer under messes up the one I'm working on, what do I do? I'm still just starting and I love the medium. I'm still not sure what I should do when this happens or how to avoid it. I often end up overworking the paper trying to solve it
H- Hewwo uwu This could be a case of your materials limiting your progress, when you use high quality watercolours and paper the underneith layers cannot be rubbed off to that degree.

I’m about to buy my first ever art book and I’m excited but also confused at the same time. Mainly because I’m still an amateur at both drawing and watercolor and don’t know what book to buy first. Watercolor is just so soothing and amazing to work with but I still have a lot to learn on drawing.

These portraits are lovely from start to finish and I'm fascinated watching your process. I was particularly drawn (unintentional pun!) to the way you rendered the hair textures, both on the top left and the top right faces. I especially love the soft cloud of the black girl's hair with the highlights and shapes suggesting the type of curls. Masterfully done!

ooo theres watercolor paper thats thicker and stuff!!! i heard taping down the paper helps too :)
i use the windsor and newton paper it is really thick and so good!

What color u mix for skin tone ?
I have a difficult with color skin sometimes it's work and sometimes not

I use pink and yellow veery diluted for white skintones! But it totaly varies in the environment and the tone of the drawing. For example, sometimes I add a bit of purple/dark blue to make it more gray-ish and on the cool side, or more orange and brown for a tan.
It's a matter of trying. Mix, add color, add different amounts of whater and just try it. And also, take notes from the proportions and what color you used, if you get it wright you might want to replicate it later.
Never use white to make the colors brighter! Use water
It draws beautifully and quickly! When I edited the video with TimeLabs, I realized that I had too many strokes.
But you do not touch the same place many times. It's amazing!
It was nice to be able to see the diversity of pictures every time I changed the camera angle.
It was a lot of learning to me.
I do not paint with watercolors but draw with colored pencils. Your illustrations seem to have inspired me a lot.

right now, my favourite brushes are the Kolinsky brushes from Trekell (the black ones you see in this video). they hold a great amount of water and pigment, so its easier for washes and big applications of paint.
if you want to start out with watercolour, i highly recommend going for synthetic taklon brushes instead as they are a lot more affordable!

So, why do you start your skin tones around the eyes? Is just personal preference or something you were taught? Or is something other reason? I haven't done anything skin related before, if that helps at all.
I think it's just a personal preference. For me, at least, starting out with the eyes gives me a reference to gauge upon how detailed and how much I need to build upon to balance the face. Probably because the eyes are the natural center of focus

Using a crown pen for white highlights.
brilliant.
I am personally kind of stuck, since i'm an autodidact on what to do in certain situations.
The white highlights were one of them until today.
i tried white pencils, but you have to push those really hard in order to give off a clear white line, but that often results in breaking off the wips, and having to sharpen them again, and again and again.
The softer pencils are hard to do a hard or sharp line with and end up looking blurry.
This crown pen is golden.

Great video ... 4 years old now but still very worth watching. Never worry about failure ... it's what keeps us striving. If we're not afraid we're not pushing hard enough and our work just becomes mediocre. Stay afraid and stay fresh.

hiiighly recommend koh-i-noor watercolour discs to starting out!
personally i really like cakes, i used the sakura koi pocket field sketch 24 set it comes with a waterbrush which i find very helpful, for tubes reeves is pretty basic and decent :)
I'm using the Windsor and Newton pocketbox set, it comes with 12 colours and a paintbrush, I think it's pretty good.
reeves watercolors are also really good, that's what i used to start off with. hope that helps lol

whenever i try to layer, the paint underneath reactivates and lifts :(
Try using synthetic brushes
Could be a bunch of things.
- do you let things dry completely before working on the next layer?
- is your paint prone to lifting?
- do you scrub or work heavily on the page?
- do you put paint down too thickly?
I hope you can figure it out.
you should wait for your first layer to dry and then put your next layer on top.
If thats not the problem, it may be the materials you use, e.g. paper, brush, paint

Whenever I add another layer after one dries, the paint always lifts up in at least one area and leaves a big splotch of white where the paper under is showing. I tried lifting excess watter thinking that it is caused by excess pooling but it seems like no matter what I do, the layer under messes up the one I'm working on, what do I do? I'm still just starting and I love the medium. I'm still not sure what I should do when this happens or how to avoid it. I often end up overworking the paper trying to solve it
H- Hewwo uwu This could be a case of your materials limiting your progress, when you use high quality watercolours and paper the underneith layers cannot be rubbed off to that degree.

I’m about to buy my first ever art book and I’m excited but also confused at the same time. Mainly because I’m still an amateur at both drawing and watercolor and don’t know what book to buy first. Watercolor is just so soothing and amazing to work with but I still have a lot to learn on drawing.

These portraits are lovely from start to finish and I'm fascinated watching your process. I was particularly drawn (unintentional pun!) to the way you rendered the hair textures, both on the top left and the top right faces. I especially love the soft cloud of the black girl's hair with the highlights and shapes suggesting the type of curls. Masterfully done!
