If you ask me, you don't need any reason for what you feel or do like to do. Your build looks awesome...good for you..I would do the same if I had the means.
Don’t feed the trolls man. If someone has a problem with the way someone else they don’t even know lives their life or makes their decisions to the point that they want to make a bunch of negative RUclips comments about it then they are lacking something in their life. Keep up with the great videos. The new scenery you’re living in makes me a little jealous but thanks to your videos I’m spending more time exploring Pisgah NF and camping with my family. I just wish my videos turned out as good.
I think you have the exact spot I tent camped at (@9:19) nearly 20 years ago. Hiked Sneffels, caught in a thunderstorm a half mile above treeline. I also love camping next to a creek.
For me, building anything becomes a continual "weak link" problem (real or perceived). My computer, my woodshop, my truck, etc. Anything I build, I end up improving piece by piece, constantly identifying a new "weak link" and obsessing about improving *that* part... until I identify another. It's an endless cycle of tinkering and improvement (or just change).
I know it's much easier to say than to do, but don't let what anyone says bother you. Your decisions are about you and your situation. The bigger your following becomes, the less likely it is that the things you do and say will make everyone happy. That's just how it is. Your videos are not only entertaining but also hopeful and informative. It takes an incredible amount of extra work to film your trips the way you do, to go through all the footage and decide what to share and in what order, to find a soundtrack that conveys the mood, to open yourself up by sharing a piece of your life with us. I really appreciate the things I've learned from watching your channel. It makes my overland experience better. I'm not the only one who feels that way. Keep your stick on the ice.
I think you handled the answer to the seemingly negative comments with bluntness and class. Little things like that is why I enjoy your videos and the fact that you seem to take your kids everywhere. Great parenting start by letting them be kids. Carry on sir and may you be blessed with good travels.
Enjoy the fact that you have the money to continue making changes to meet your needs and desires, and don't worry about what others think or say. If I had the available funds I would be doing the same types of upgrades and improvements to my 4Runner as well, but I don't so I'm content with what I have been blessed with. I enjoy your videos and look forward to what you share with us!
best part of the video is you running back to your truck after setting it down for the drive up shot under the over hang. haha you always see those shots and think to yourself, "I wonder how much effort that took" and here, we see, first hand ,what was put into it. great stuff man!
Nothing wrong with you changing your mind. You are right on with everything you said. With that, I enjoy your channel. Thanks for the content! Starting to outfit our new Tundra and 4Runner with goodies as well.
You created this channel, you did all the networking, you did all the hard work behind the scenes and now you’re benefiting from it. Good for you sir 👍. I enjoy watching and listening to your videos. Keep up the good work.
Dang! What a rant. You truly blew out some steam there. But you do not have for any reason try to justify yourself for spending $10,000 to $15,000 of your hard earned money on your car. You do not have to explain that nobody. It is your car, it is your money. Turn it into a rock crawler if you want even. It is your choice. Just be realistic and know that you post on youtube. So some people across the country or the world would always post some things that may hurt your feelings. It is just normal. But hey, it is to be expected. Just brush it off and do not explain yourself to justify why you spent your own money on your own vehicle. Forget them. Looking forward to your next video. You do great work in your videos. Keep it up.
Hey Jason, I think it’s cool that you actually took the time to explain yourself, but I wouldn’t stress the small stuff. I have been following you for a while now and have really enjoyed seeing your 4Runner transform to what it is today.
Jason don’t apologize for evolving in Overlanding. Evolution is what happens when (1)you have a mindset to constantly improve (yourself and your mode of transportation) and (2)you are actually using gear out in the field based on your scenarios. Thanks for putting forth the effort and time to capture and share your journey for the rest of us to LEARN from your experience. At the end of the day, it is up us to develop our own strategy and configuration based upon our own unique situation, what we have learned, and our experiences. I don’t know if your viewers realize how much effort it takes to produce these videos but I would just like to say thanks putting up with the hassle of running back and forth to your vehicle in order to get certain shots to help tell your story. Great editing!! Keep up the great work!
I think we use the words "Modifying" and "Upgrading" too loosely. They are not the same. Your build has shown growth. While that comment has valid points, it fails to consider the improvements. As we upgrade our vehicles, we take our adventures to another level and sometimes that identifies limitations, so we take it a step further. My ORP is basically heading in your initial direction, and living in FL, I feel that it will work for my needs long term.
Don't worry about the kids acting like they don't care about anything. My kids do the same thing. I did it as a kid as well, but I was deeply moved by trips like these as a kid.
Brother you see some beautiful parts of the country I may never really experience in all honesty. I wish you could capture in 4k that would be so beautiful but even then at 1080p your videos are stunning especially when you bring us along on your journeys. Its gorgeous really man. The amount of effort, care and work you put into your videos really show and I, as-well as your other subs, really do appreciate it man, thank you Jason. You've managed to keep my mind occupied the last couple of weeks while I've been dealing with some health and life issues and I honestly just genuinely wanted to say thank you man. Best regards to you and your family man.
Great video and thanks for going out of your way to explain what shouldn't really need to be explained to begin with. Totally understand the constant evolution of our vehicles what works better for us as the longer we are in this awesome hobby/lifestyle. I knew from the start that my primary objective when modifying my Tacoma, was to ultimately save up for the parts/equipment that I really wanted at the time to avoid having to buy cheap now and buy what I really wanted for later on. That hasn't always happened and I'm ok with that. The experience I've had with modifying our truck has been very rewarding. Not only can I provide valuable feedback to others; I can also help others with making informed decisions on what works best for them. Keep up the great work!
I love watching these videos. By far some of the greatest edits I have had the pleasure to watch. Then there's the scenery. I am from FL and have yet to witness half of this stuff with my own eyes, so I totally agree with you when you said you're kind of rushing to get where you need to in FL because it all looks the same. I hope to take a roadtrip out west someday and take this all in. Keep up the great work and content! To top it off you have a bada$$ 4Runner build as well. Cheers!
Thank you for all your time you put into your videos! Also thank you for sharing your decisions you make it is very helpful for the viewers. Who cares if you change your mind! If you get new info of course your going to go other routes to make your 4runner better! Thank you, Ian Smart
You said it right, you made the changes because they meet your needs at the time you made them. There may be more mods, but I love that you share them with us as you and your adventure evolve. Blessings and safe travels!
I'm new to Overlanding and have watched several of your videos. I recently bought a 16 4runner trail, and have started some mods, many based on what you have shared. This info has been invaluable to me and I appreciate you sharing your journey! Pay no mind to the knuckleheads lol. Rock on bro👍👍👍
Very well said about why we mod our vehicles a lot of people won’t understand when it comes to changing your already great vehicle you want to make it your own you want to make it perform better than it does now
You do what you want. I don't think you need to justify your change. When i did autocross, my build was based on what i could afford and changes were constant when i had more money. Now i will build based upon what i can afford and change will be constant. Good job and keep up the great vids !!
First time long time. love your videos. just recently purchased a 2019 4runner trd offroad premium. cant wait to put a little lift and bigger tires n see what it does.. Saludos from Los Angeles Ca.
Your beating a dead horse trying to figure out someone's 2 cent opinion/question. Keep doing what your doing. We're all learning here. My personal favorite is when you in another video suggested "buy it as you need it." I think that was a very wise statement. I'm definitely sticking to that one. Thanks for all your videos and don't forget to enjoy your amazing trips without the worry of putting it all on camera.
My first "build" was a mountain bike in 1995. It started out as a simple hardtail with basic components and over the course of 3 years the only original part was the frame. I changed everything out (multiple times) as both my needs and technology changed. I kinda view my truck in that same fashion as I'm not planning a crazy build at the moment, but may at some point straight axle it and do a full exo-cage. Cool video, it shows you care!
I just finsh watching your video and the reason i watch is to see how you are doing it better and how i can do it better. I wood like to go out there with ease of comfort. Dont waste your time on changing someones mind.. you are not going to please everyone. Stay postive because i like postive people. That guy can make his own youtube channel with his own ideas and his own following.. any upgrades you do is for your comfort and safety of your family.
Love you videos Jason. As others have stated, the more you use your rig and test its limits, the more you can find areas that need to be improved to continue doing what you want to do. I have seen lifted Wranglers with 38 inch tires on beadlock rims and I really nice steel front bumper with winch. Then I ask the soccer mom driving it where she goes off-roading. "Oh I've never taken my baby off-road. I have never even engaged the 4 wheel drive." You truly use your vehicle in a way that tests and sometimes stresses its limits. If you change a setup for any reason, then it is NOT a failure of the previous design but rather an awakening of a better way. Keep on overlanding and putting up your incredible videos.
This thing we call life is an evolution. We never know what we want or need until the situation arises. It is easy to arm chair things when it is not your money being spent. I just bought a JLUR and I am outfitting it to run many of the trails that you do in your videos. Love your videos and content. With that said, I am trying to "build" it with the though process of never making my wife walk 60 miles out of the mountains. My plan is to build the JLUR so that I never need to exceed 70% of the capacity/ability of the vehicle. I live in Michigan so I have no real idea of way is truly required. I can watch your video, and others to get a good idea. I suspect that after a spend some time out west, my/our needs and wants will change. I do not think there is ever an end to the modification process as we do not know every need or want. With all that said, I think that it is so cool that you bring your kids with you. One of the best things we can do for our kids is show them that the world is bigger than their home town. I traveled a lot with my kids as they grew up. Your camping needs will change as they grow. When they are all grown, they will look back and tell you how much you enriched their lives as children. You are awesome and keep videos coming. As a Jeep kinda guy, I still love your content. And thank you for taking me with you on your adventures, while I freeze here in Michigan. You will help get me through 4 months of grey skies, no sun and crap weather.
I have to say that I was a little confused at first, maybe because my 4Runner is very similar to yours and I would like to do a similar build. I still like what you are doing and please keep up the totally cool commentary. Keep up the great editing and be safe. One last thing....is that the family thing with the kids and the total crazy short commentary from the kids makes you real.
Jason dont let the guy who challenged your decisions they are yours not his and you are not responsible for what other people choose to do with the wonderful information you provide. As a Jeeper I understand the desire to progress and increase the capability of both man and machine. You started stock and grew and so did you 4runner. You keep making great videos and enjoy the time with family and friends!
Yes, it is what it is, and its your decision if you want to change anything, don't worry about what other people think or even comment. Safe travels...
Listen man, you're doing great ! You do you and let others be themselves. Things change, needs change, being able to go further more comfortably is important. I think your rig is set up much better for where you go now, and will go. I think you'll be very happy with it for some time to come. I watch a lot of You Tube channels and get ideas from all of them but in the end I'll do what's best for me regardless of how much others change. Great kids by the way, very silly. :)
Hey Jason, after watching the video I felt like I needed to get off the couch and reply with my personal perspective. You upgraded your rig with new and improved products to serve a purpose. You have the means and don't owe anyone answers to how or why. That being said, as a long time subscriber I enjoyed watching the beginning of your overlanding adventure. You had a " I know it's not the best but, it works for me" mentality when looking at your rig. Your detail, thoughtfulness on what you purchased and installed was well explained and appreciated. I really enjoyed that about your videos. This is how many people start with modifying their rides to help fit with what they want to do. One dollar at a time, one piece at a time. The issue I see is now is people may consider you one the "elitist" overlanding people with a overbuilt rig for what they see you do in your videos. Once again your money, your business. Do I consider folks like ExpeditionOverland one of the grass roots parts of overlanding? Sure. Do I watch the videos they put out lately, No. Is it realistic that people will spend 40+k on a rig, 15+k on upgrades, 25+k on a trailer? Not really. Do the newest videos seem like a commercial/promotion for particular products you have on your rig? Maybe. But that's what's beautiful about RUclips. You become popular and you can have access to products easier and sometimes cheaper if they are displayed or mentioned in the video. I wouldn't expect any thing otherwise. And for these reasons you will pull in some trolls and folks that are just jealous of what you have and what you can do All in all what I enjoy about your videos now is the kids, the destinations, and the adventures you experience in-between setting up camp. So keep it up!
Thanks for leaving the best spots for us neanderthals still camping in ground tents :D Miss ya out here on the east coast, but thanks for taking us along out there
Unfortunately there will always be negative people with negative comments....there are always thing's in life that we want...sometimes we get those thing's and we are satisfied and other times even though we are satisfied we still want something different. It's actually pretty helpful to me that you have made these different changes, it gives me more insight on what I would like to do to my 4runner. Thank you for all of your awesome videos! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!!
Do what you want. I have loved watching what you have done. Starting small and then going all out. I might be stealing some of your ideas for my 4Runner!
Brother it’s normal to evolve. Also You have a great life style that a lot of us will love to have and can’t. Some of us will be happy for you and be thankful to you for what you share with us others will just troll around and hate for what they can’t do.
I know how you feel, I drove up to Ohio from Central FL a month ago, and the scenery was breathtaking. I love seeing the Fall colors and all the great topography..
Things change, needs change. You upgraded based on wants and needs. People are always going to hate because they're jealous that they can't do the upgrades that you have done. I like seeing the new upgrades, your truck is a beast now
You don't need to explain yourself. You do you and if it makes you happy then do it. I have found that as we go along in life our ideas change and evolve and sometimes they don't. I think the biggest thing here is you started with an idea with no knowledge of what you were doing and now you are learning more and more and having fun along the way. So what is wrong with that? I for one am appreciative for you taking us along on your journey. You never know who is watching this and learning from it or being inspired by it.
It’s pretty simple really. Everything we pursue or do will evolve as we gain experience. Jason started with what he felt was beyond sufficient for his needs, but as he’s gained experience and knowledge his desires, needs, and requirements have evolved. I love what you are doing here Jason, keep up the good work brother!
"as he’s gained experience and knowledge his desires, needs, and requirements have evolved" So true, and I think it happens to most people who have desire to gain more knowledge to get more of an experience!
You do you man! Hell with the haters. By the way thanks for being a awesome dad and letting the kids get camera time to and not getting mad about it! That's cool for sure!!
Don’t explain yourself. The progression has been awesome. I’m wearing rain gear today because it’s raining. Yesterday I wore short sleeves because it was sunny.
Great video Jason! I'm just amazed the amount of time you put in into setting up your camera along the trail to get the shots of your 4runner. Setting up your camera along the trail and then running back to your 4Runner to get that nice shot as you go by.
I'm glad you ended it with "needs or wants change". That's the reason. If pressed, it can have to do with changing your direction or it could have to do with growth in understanding or both. If someone flames you for it, that is really their problem. understandably but unnecessarily you can take it as your problem but you have to learn to cope with it.
Jason I think what the jack wagon was saying is that there are people who emulate/copy your build and when you change yours it make them "feel" like they have to keep up with the "Jones's". Keep up your videos. They are different and I like them.
My $0.02.... you don't need to defend your decision making. As your journey matures, so do your needs and wants. If you have the means to fulfill, then do it. Simple as that. Keep up the good work Jason. Love what you're doing and especially the opportunities you are giving your kids. It's what I like to do for my girls as well.
Hi Jason, Long time subscriber, first time poster. It’s your 4 runner, do what you want to it and enjoy it. Life’s too short. I wouldn’t let the negative naysayers bother you.
You hit the nail on the head. You'd be a fool NOT to change your setup moving from Florida to Utah. Huge climate and terrain difference. New challenges and obstacles. You did the smart thing.
Not often mentioned in these conversations is as consumers we have to acknowledge the need to fit in. Part of the drive to “change” or to get new gear is to feel we have what is required to fit in with a certain group. Unfortunately many of us feel we have to have a certain kit or gear before we can get out and do something, or go somewhere (insert whatever activity you choose). But of course the more we get into an activity or hobbie the more we learn and the more refined our desires and “direction” becomes within that pursuit, often necessitating another purchase.
Jason, I am surprised that you didn't bring up that your build reflects your environment. I saw the change in direction as being a direct result of that. As you talked about in the beginning of the video the terrain around your home is really different since you have moved to the west. Being in the mountains and having a different distance to places you want to go. I suspect you are more offroad now and tackling different types of obstacles.
Reevaluating current equipment for its usefulness should always happen when major lifestyle, location, life changes occur; to see if it's still the best fit for you and direction you want to go.
Life is a journey, at different stages we need/want different things. It's totally normal. I feel bad for people who stuck in their 20's for they entire life.
It's your rig. Do whatever makes you happy. But also - remember to be grateful for what you have: Great kids, good health, money, food on the table, a roof over your head, free time to do what you enjoy, etc. Happy Thanksgiving.
No problem with wanting to make a change for whatever reason you may have. Our vehicle would probably be in more constant flux if I wasn't so paralyzed by indecision, haha. I'll get an idea for making a change, then i'll obsessively research and overanalyze the equipment to the point of paralysis, then by the time I'm ready to pull the trigger, some new product will come out that's similar and the cycle repeats itself as I throw all plans out the window and start over.
Jason follow your instincts when building your 4-runner, and never let others shame you into explaining why. Enjoy your build, while inspiring and influencing your viewers.😀👌🏾🤙🏾😎😊✌🏾
I think some of those people that are questioning your different mods are mainly just Internet Trolls that they get their kicks to push your buttons, so I’d just ignore them and enjoy your vehicle and do whatever mods you want to do to it. Keep up the great work Jason.
It's ok the modify or upgrade its completely up to what you want I think others are saying and seeing is that, you're able to do upgrades/modify for your adventures. Doesn't mean your followers/subscribers have to do the same. Its completely up to the adventures, a basic 4x4 stock is fine but your going further and tougher areas mods/upgrades are fine. I would only suggest cost effective for YOUR means not the other guys goals. Still awesome show.
I don't know anyone who builds up vehicles like this, in this way, that DOESN'T change their mind, redirect ideas, change opinions, modify focus, or evolve. It's all part of the process. Don't let the flamers bother you. ☮️
I’ve changed my mind multiple times on 5 different Jeep builds since ‘06. On my 4th JK since ‘13. People change their minds on restaurants and wives so why can’t someone on their vehicles. I follow you and don’t even have a 4 Runner, but I might change my mind and get a 4Runner. Oh wait, I’m not allowed to do that apparently. F that!! I do what I want and say what I want with who I want. And always will. Love your channel.
For the perfect people that have perfect vehicles that never have a problem stock! I am truly sorry for your situation and that you will never experience the fun of modified vehicles.
When it comes down to it. Each vehicle is specific to that individual person and what there specific needs and wants are. The vehicle will be in a constant state of evolution and change just as the person who owns the vehicle. Change will forever be part of the experience. So if someone has an issue with you changing your vehicle they need to look onto themselves and not you changing your vehicle.
Great video and loving the 4Runner, the only way to get ground clearance is bigger tires, that’s the only way the diffs will raise. A “lift” raises the height of the body of the vehicle, not the clearance from the ground to the underbody. 👍🏼
Don't let the keyboard warriors keep you down bud! Growth is part of life and to think that your vehicle would not continue to grow to meet your needs is just asinine. Plus... the changes are freaking awesome and to chronicle where your needs were a few years ago to now is a pretty cool thing. When you first started off you did not want to go to big or expensive and built to your needs, and as you mentioned, you moved to a completely new environment with different needs. Keep up the great videos!!!
You’ve made changes on your truck because you have the means to and you wanted a more quality product. Nothing wrong with that.
Do you if you got it get it
I definitely wouldn’t let my vision on my 18 TRD off road 4Runner be influenced by others, or it would turn into a clown car real fast
Dylan Benzeleski 😂👍👍👍
If you ask me, you don't need any reason for what you feel or do like to do. Your build looks awesome...good for you..I would do the same if I had the means.
Don’t feed the trolls man. If someone has a problem with the way someone else they don’t even know lives their life or makes their decisions to the point that they want to make a bunch of negative RUclips comments about it then they are lacking something in their life.
Keep up with the great videos. The new scenery you’re living in makes me a little jealous but thanks to your videos I’m spending more time exploring Pisgah NF and camping with my family. I just wish my videos turned out as good.
Love that you include your family in all your vlogs man. Your kids are great!
It's all good Jason that truck is your canvas you can do whatever you choose with it.
I think you have the exact spot I tent camped at (@9:19) nearly 20 years ago. Hiked Sneffels, caught in a thunderstorm a half mile above treeline. I also love camping next to a creek.

Great video, keep it up Jason. Appreciate the candid conversation and glad your defending yourself and not just apologizing to negative comments!
Keep it simple. Do not over think.
I go to youtube when I want to learn. Thank you.
Jason, some people are just looking for something negative to say. Stay positive like always, we love your content.
Your 4Runner build is just awesome overall man!
I hope to some day be fortunate enough to get something done to my tacoma, great video 👍
And for these reasons you will pull in some trolls and folks that are just jealous of what you have and what you can do
All in all what I enjoy about your videos now is the kids, the destinations, and the adventures you experience in-between setting up camp. So keep it up!
Thanks for leaving the best spots for us neanderthals still camping in ground tents :D Miss ya out here on the east coast, but thanks for taking us along out there
“Your needs and wants change” , nothing wrong with that. Your fine.
Enjoy your videos!
THANK YOU for introducing me to Ouray!
Oh, if you like offroading, make sure to go to Ouray. It is so unique in it's own way. From moderate to hardcore. You will enjoy it.
Make sure you go.
Love the mods and trips. Keep doing what you do.
I've been watching your videos for a while and it's pretty cool you came to utah I love it here and hope you keep enjoying it
Things change, needs change. You upgraded based on wants and needs. People are always going to hate because they're jealous that they can't do the upgrades that you have done. I like seeing the new upgrades, your truck is a beast now
Don’t let it bother you man, just keep making the great videos
Your editing skills are off the charts
Jason, that edit you did at 7:13 is pretty sweet. The way those clouds start is 👌🏼
You do you man!
Dude, ignore the haters. Do you, your build is stellar. Keep up the good work.
I lived in Western Colorado for a couple years. Absolutely love it there.
Hi Jason,
Long time subscriber, first time poster. It’s your 4 runner, do what you want to it and enjoy it. Life’s too short. I wouldn’t let the negative naysayers bother you.
Great video as always Jason!!
You hit the nail on the head. You'd be a fool NOT to change your setup moving from Florida to Utah. Huge climate and terrain difference. New challenges and obstacles. You did the smart thing.
Right now I’m just saving for a roof rack/lights/AT tires. That’s all I need to explore.
You're doing great! God bless.
You're adventures are the bomb
The thinking bit was genius.
We change to improve as we gain experience we change. It's called growth...Not a bad thing...
Soon...I will see you out on the trails, in the mountains and in the dessert.
You don’t need to justify what you do your needs changed so you adapt and overcome. BTW your truck looks great
Reevaluating current equipment for its usefulness should always happen when major lifestyle, location, life changes occur; to see if it's still the best fit for you and direction you want to go.
Jason thanks for the update I really like your videos. Waiting to win one of your giveaways for my 2018 4Runner. Thanks again and God bless you.
I don’t know what people don’t understand? When you mod a car or truck it’s to your liking. We aren’t doing it for them. It’s our stuff.
I live in montrose Colorado and I go up all summer in my razor👍🏼👍🏼Ouray is so beautiful isn’t it?
That kid of yours just cracks me up.!!!
He’s so hilarious! Thanks Marco!
Jason Koertge Your vídeos are pretty unique! I love the detailed narration and editing!
For the perfect people that have perfect vehicles that never have a problem stock! I am truly sorry for your situation and that you will never experience the fun of modified vehicles.
Why worry about the haters it’s your rig . Wants and needs change , So go for it
When it comes down to it.
It’s your truck! You have every right to do what you want!
Thanks Jon!
