  • Vlog 48
    This is the SECOND part of DAY ONE at Overland Expo East 2017. In this episode, we go into DETAIL how to handle technical terrain, as from our class: Picking a Better Line, hosted by Graham with 7P International. He was fantastic, the class was awesome and I LEARNED SO MUCH.
    #toyota #4runner #overlanding #off-roading #4x4 #overlandexpo
    I just wanted to express my genuine appreciation for the promoters and organizers of Overland Expo East (and west), Jonathan and Roseann Hanson. I'd also like to formerly acknowledge the course instructors, Graham Jackson and his associates that assisted in the class instruction. I appreciate their preparation and all the knowledge I acquired in their winching class.
    I said it at the end of this movie (I believe), but I feel it important to mention here as well: Watching these movies is a fantastic way to learn, I watch videos on RUclips all the time to figure out how to do stuff. But NOTHING replaces the physical experience of attending a class, interacting with the other class members and instructors, and witnessing live situations and all the variables that can play in with varying personalities.
    In full disclosure, I have had conversations with the event promoters and they did ask that I offer some clarification, hence what I have above - HOWEVER, I absolutely agree with this and freely offered to publish this in the description of this movie.

    I love what you're doing. Unlike a lot of these channels/guys, you don't act like you know everything or have an ego that typically comes with "adventurers" or "overlanders" It's refreshing to watch your stuff that's super real and not overdone or overly dramatic.

    I agree with Jason here. These classes are indispensable. Especially for those of us who are just getting our feet wet in Overlanding, and into that difficult terrain. Thanks for the excellent video. Not just entertaining, but a good training video as well.

    Great video, I loved watching the instructor talk people through the details on what exactly is happening at each moment. I learned a lot in the small amount of time. I'm gonna have to go to one of these someday.

    Jason, Great as always! I last did most of this stuff from 15 to 10 years ago, taking a break while the kids were young. I'm getting back into it and I find your videos to be a great motivator for myself and my kids. I've watched many but it's your editting and your story telling that really set yours apart from others. I think you manage to keep an engaging pace but also have the little moments of truth. It's entertaining and endearing.
    Personally, I think giving a name, "overlanding", to adventuring with your vehicle has really spurred a true community that didn't really exist in the same way before. With regard to the course, you nailed it. Even when you are experienced, a good course/instructor will still teach you something. Utimately, you have to put your knowledge into action and experience the variables that creates to really learn how to do something.

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  6 лет назад +1

      Ah great comment! I hadn't thought about the concept/idea of naming camping/vehicle-based adventure travel actually creating a community out of something that has actually been in existence as long as we've had some form of transportation - but you're right! And I absolutely agree on the front of learning. I'm more experienced today than I was a year ago, but I will have more in my toolbag of knowledge in a few years than what I do now!

    I'm just curious if you've ever had a neck injury in your past? It appears like you never turn your neck -- you always move your upper body instead. I didn't know if it was due to a prior injury or just an affectation you've developed over the years. Thank you for your great videos... as someone looking to get into overlanding, they are an incredible resource to see your progression. I'm also enjoying your editing style -- loved the fast rewind to start this episode.

    Really enjoying your channel Jason (and a beautiful family)! Ready to pull the trigger on a 2018 4Runner TRD Off Road this week (think I can do better modifying that one rather than spilling my guts on a TRD Pro) and pouring through videos, reviews, ideas and your channel stands out from the rest. Inspirational to say the least as this opens doors to different possibilities from what we were considering before as I head closer to retirement age. We were thinking of some kind of Class B or C motor home but have always preferred camping and you opening up an option I'd really like to explore. Thank you my American Brother from Canada eh!

    Walking it first, ugh, so true. Ages back, my best friend and I were in a remote area of Alaska outside of Fairbanks to the east, about 40 miles. We thought (we were both tired, and were about to be even more tired soon) oh this is an easy push to that part of the stream to fish. We were wrong. We sank up to the frames in some sort of strange clay, that looked hard in the lights it was night.
    Luckily we had bug spray with us, as the bugs were the absolute worst, shovel broke half way through the night, it was September and quite cold at night working in moist dirt. We eventually gave up, started walking through the bush, and ended up at someone's house who pulled us out. I remember the 1986 (this was in 1991) Toyota extra cab pickup needed at minimum a new clutch.
    Point of the story, walk it, and yes, I have been with buddies all over in different areas, Oregon, Montana, Idaho and now Arizona, annoying them with? Getting out, looking, probing, then going. I haven't been stuck since, seriously.

    If you go to Moab in May, ping me, and we can go shoot drone footage outside the parks, up Gemini Bridges and Crips Hole, and go loop the White Rim Trail. Then south to some awesome ruins like Moonhouse (video on my channel). I've been exploring out there for 35 years, and every trip discover something new and amazing. I use the 4-Runner to get to cool places, rather than to assault the terrain, which is why I have 260k and 19 years on it, and it's still going strong. Ever driven a manual 4-Runner? So much fun, so direct and unfiltered, although now your videos are inspiring me to cough up $50k and upgrade. My bank account says, thanks, Jason, thanks a lot. :-) Love your videos, your rig and your kid's commentary. Keep it coming.

    Just curious, but did they specifically tell you to start the exercise without the locker engaged and not aired down? Didn't know if that was more for teaching purposes, since a lot of people don't have that feature

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  6 лет назад +2

      js92css no no. It was mentioned that airing down is always ideal. But for the class it wasn’t reasonable for everyone to do that. It’s likely not everyone would have had the equipment to air down/up. As far as the rear lockers - I asked about this because I’ve not been of the mindset to be changing that stuff mid obstacle - this is a school of thought kinda thing. Some believe its best to only use when needed. Others feel it’s best to engage prior. I tend to lean towards the former now since locking the rear diff can really change the terrain fast.

    • @js92css
      @js92css 6 лет назад

      Jason Koertge I have heard that many times as well, in respect to the rear locker. I will definitely try to put that habit to practice. I normally lock up if I think its a possibility I will need it, mostly because our Xterra takes almost a full wheel revolution to engage.
      Keep up the good work!

    • @drtone
      @drtone 5 лет назад

      I understand there can be 2 schools of thought, but i disagree not engaging Locker "until" you need it. I drive a old school part-time 4 x 4 with open fr. and rr diffs, btw. I think not using Locker is predominantly counter intuitive and ego driven. When you approach an obstacle, I believe you assess the line, and engage neccessary tools to pass. That may mean choosing to engage 4 lo or 4 high, and locking rear. You are more likely to alter terrain by being unlocked, but I gotta hand it to him, that's sophisticated thinking that the locker can have this negative consequence, i'll hand that to him, but that is simply rarely the case. You rarely need it anyways, so you might as well engage it as much as needed to keep it lubed and aware its working. What if it fails to engage mid obstacle, you are better knowing before you are stuck mid obstacle. So what if you "didn't need it, you will be in better control and usually easier on machine. Not engaging front locker has benefits to preserve steering, so in dual locked you can decide not to use, "unless needed" so that makes sense. If you are not locking for fun, have at it, but at risk for tearing up vehicle and track more for next guy. Especially, when your particular machine is open only without it. Rare machines that might have LSD when unlocked makes more sense, and that should be the default, not open. That's why improved electronic locking scenarios make a lot of sense, since its always there when needed, even unexpectedly. Purist poo-poo anything other than switchable full lockers, but automatic locking schemes are better, allowing less sophisticated drivers to succeed without having to strategize the locker deployment. That's why military hummers and J8 jeeps don't use lockers, but use helical diffs with electonic brake based locking. When bullets are whizzing by, you do not want to be fiddling with the decision to lock, and if the skilled driver is incapacitated, any soldier can jump in and try to squirt to safety. Also for fun on flowing trails, where different terrain conditions are rapidly changing, its better also. Otherwise, just wheel a 2WD with open diff and sssssssend it!!!!!! Ha ha....

    Why does every 4runner owner think A-Track is the best system to use? Rock mode people, rock mode will get you out every time.

    If that was a Toyota Landcruiser than its out dated as in Australia we have the twin turb diesel V8 with 5.2 litres and six speed auto . Out performs the old 100 series Landcruiser by a country mile. Also what the hell has happened to the 4runner , Its now one of the ugliest vehicles I have seen and also way to low for Australian conditions. I`ll keep my 4rd gen 4runner anytime over this model shown in the clip. Traction control waste of time. diff lockers win everytime over traction control
