- Unused animations on some Half-Life 2 models.
It is possible that some of these animations used, and I just have never seen them. If that's the case, please let me know which ones they are and where they are used in the comments!
If you're wondering why I'm using Garry's Mod for this, it's because I couldn't get the Hammer model viewer to work, otherwise I would've used that instead.
Since so many people are asking, the music used are 2 songs from the HL2 soundtrack. Black Mesa Inbound, and Lab Practicum.

The alyxgun was a usable player weapon in the mod 'Obsidian Conflict' i think, it worked really well

There is an morph with an gmod pill pack that has an alyx gun that can change into 3 different forms-pistol, rifle and sniper

I'm predicting that the die animations were made for an option to disable ragdolls
The die animations are actually meant to play, it's just an oversight that the game considers just being grabbed by a barnacle as instant death and automatically converts those npcs into ragdolls.

Khalil Atofiv I do believe so , also some games back in the day had an option to disable ragdolls so old computers could handle the game without loosing too much fps.

Easy to forget that the striders are actually alive, but biomechanically modified. I wonder if they do need sleep. I suppose that's sort of like recharging a battery or refueling an engine?

yeah amazing, just the other day I saw a pixel in HL2 that I've never seen before. truly mind bending discoveries being made about this game all these years later
I would actually like to see the Alyxgun in-game. Imagine a pistol turning into a pistol rifle on the spot. Probably some balances here and there but it would be cool.

My only guess on why the vortigaunt has tau cannon animations is because either:
1:They’re placeholder animations from HL1 for the vortigaunt attacking
2: a vortigaunt was maybe meant to show you how the tau cannon worked before the vort mounted the tau cannon onto the buggy before you started driving it during the Coast/vechile sections
Though I could be entierely wrong

The way I see it, the Antlion Guardian animations aren't for going inside tunnels. I see it as a way to cover it's exposed and weak belly.
Martial some asshole leaked hl2 so it got pushed and wasn't at the level of awesomeness they wanted it to be
Getting chased by a guardian in episode 2 is one of the most terrifying moments in gaming history

Probably because of lore reasons.. i mean after all these are highly modified creatures. The combine most likely got rid of their need for sleep during the process of Turing the creature into the strider

I think I saw stomping animation once, when vortigaunt engaged antlion in a fistfight, but I may be wrong
Yeah the vorts have 2 animations to fight antlions! The stomp seen here is used for the headcrabs, but I'm not sure if they're seen ingame
I miss this game series so much, hearing the ambience playing in the video gives me flashbacks of hl1. I dont think there will ever be a game to top what halflife brought to the gaming world
I like the idea of the Vorts using the Tau cannon. With their green space magic powers, I can only imagine how overcharged it might make it.
Based on what happened in Questionable Ethics, I think if a vortigaunt overcharged the tau cannon there'd be one less vortigaunt on Earth.

The antlion gaurd's bug bate attack kinda makes me believe that Antlions where more passive in early stages of HL2.
I believe that the striders sleeping animation was to show that they are still animals but under the combines control so they still had a bit of themselves in there
This makes me wonder what it's like if a Combine Soldier needs to rest as well

The vortigaunt's stomp animation was later used for a.. "Takedown" for zombies in Half-Life 2: Episode 2, it's different, but I think they used the animated and di some re-working on it to look cool.
It's been years and to this very day I keep discovering new HL2 beta content. At this point I'm convinced that they removed/didn't use 90% of what they could have added in the retail version.

2:33 In Episode 2, they got around the Vortigaunt climbing animation by redesigning the maps around ladders so you would never actually see him climb. Then, they just teleported him to the top of the ladder when he was out of your view.

Did anyone else try to catch the vortigaunt climbing ladder in episode 2, only to catch a glimpse of him teleporting into his new position like nothing?
So they actually did consider animating that, and have him climb the ladder
The source engine is pretty limited. NPCs can’t climb ladders themselves. While you can script them to look like the are climbing up but it will just result in them looking like they are sliding up the ladder. Valve couldn’t probably figure it out and just made the vortiguant teleport up offscreen.

Years ago I used to run a Gmod Wiremod sever, and I think one of the non-standard custom mods I had setup within wiremod, allowed using the Expression2 coding to activate all the attached animations hidden in a model. Basically allowed me to create fake hologram NPCs that animated and did stuff around the map, that really freaked out players who'd never seen those animations before, and couldn't figure out how I was getting NPCs to do strange custom stuff. lol

I think the alyx gun is cool as a weapon concept. A pistol that switches back and forth to a shotgun and a rifle. I hope HL:A uses the concept for that gun.

think there was one or two in there that i haven't seen used, besides from the ones that im pretty sure were just aouto generated, i mean walking on ladders and holding weapons would be the same animation movements for all humanoid npcs

The ep2_climb_ladder is an animation that is used but you need to pay very close attention to see it in the mind shaft when you're looking for the larval extract you know when you enter that minecart that is caged up and you like ride down this shaft into a pit and climb up it with the ladder well before that before I got onto the car when I was climbing the ladder to get to the little section that leads up to that I was wondering how he was going to climb the ladder so I went forward to trigger and I came back and I saw him climbing ladder

Some of the death animations are removed, because they decided to use ragdolls instead, and i'm happy for that. Ragdoll physics are more realistic.
