    I know these have a pretty common issue of excess RTV getting stuck in the oil pickup. While I don't necessarily think that caused the engine failure, it almost certainly could have exacerbated some kind of oil starvation issue. It's pretty disappointing when you have 20-year-old Japanese cars pounding around tracks all the time without these issues.

      "widely" as in what? I have seen maybe 10 cars with blown motors. Most of which were heavily tracked cars with no supporting mods. Several of the others were money shifted. I think people exaggerate and there are no more engine failures than your typical car. We don't hear about those because nobody cares about a honda crv or nissan sentra. These cars get attention from enthusiasts so we see it. Considering how most people drive them (myself included) its a miracle there arent more blown engines.

    Sad to hear that the motor popped, but honestly it's out of your control and shows just how amazing you are to bullet proof it as much as possible for who ever wins it. It shows how your moral compass really does point true north. I have no idea how Toyota sells it with a NASA or SCCA membership in the US, yet it starves oil down to about 1.2bar on track in right handers. I question how it made it past the engineers in testing. I saw Killer B did some testing thinking it was the oil pickup and pan but it ended up making no difference. Kinda makes me think even something extreme like a dry sump might not fix the issue because it's obviously from oil pooling somewhere. I am curious what you guys do to alleviate problem because it's clearly something internal. In all seriousness if you figure it out you will help a lot of GR86 owners out. Keep your chin up and keep putting out awesome content.

    Sorry to hear about your issue. My GR86 failed too. I heard a split second of dry running on track, standard car & oem oil, level checked that morning (close to max), long right hand bend, 118°C oil temperature, reasonably high RPM (above 5000). Then perhaps 50 miles of gentle road driving later I started to hear the unmistakable 'tuk tuk tuk' sound of a big end bearing going bad. You won't read about mine in any statistics, it was taken care of by Toyota, but it seems too easy to do. As you say, the issue of oil pooling in the heads seems to be very well known with Subaru Sti owners who track their cars. Dry sump conversion appears to be the final solution. Good luck with it, I'm going back to flat-6 with factory dry sump.

      It's really a non-issue unless you plan on pushing the car to its limits on track regularly. For a street car that sees occasional moderate track use it IS a fantastically fun car, and while the whole oil pressure thing is sometimes at the back of my mind you have to be consistently pulling pro-level lateral Gs for an extended period of time for it to be a problem and I know I'm not that good of a driver nor are 99.9% of GR86 drivers. It's disappointing that Toyota didn't design their own inline 4 for this platform which was my biggest complaint about the previous gen but I'm not surprised they didn't and honestly for a mostly street driven car the fact that the engine is the same engine that subaru throws at all their economy cars is probably a good thing in terms of parts availability, cost and reliability (not on track ofc)

    I'd like to upgrade my gr this year and having a trusted source for good parts would be greatly appreciated

      You aren't allowed to do almost anything on your car here in Germany. Rules and regulations are extremely strict. It's about keeping it street legal, you're not even allowed to build in something like an intercooler or something like that. It's very complicated here 😢

      Actually, since the Oil pressure drops a lot on High G right hand corners, a 5w-40 oil would actually be worse, and most certainly cause the engine to blow, since a thicker oil would take way more time to go back and lubricate the engine. Trust me on this one, never go higher than 5w-30. These engines are not made to support thicker oils, which in almost all cases of engine blows, the owners were using a thicker oil such as 5w-40.

    What was the cause of crash Misha?

  • @kealke
    @kealke 7 месяцев назад

    Idling a (normal) car to "warm it up" is bad for any engine. Unless its tens of degrees below 0, you want to start the engine, let it idle for at most as long as it takes the AC to defog the inside of the windscreen, and then take off calmly. Idling a cold engine for a "long" time does nothing but wear the bearings prematurely. Just FYI.
