In Kim Gordon’s book, Girl in a Band, mentioned that she was trying to describe the connection you feel when your eyes meet another person’s. Ah I love her, I love her book, I love this song.

Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, REM, Husker DU, The minutemen, The Replacements - mid to late 80s Alternative/college rock was an incredible era for music
The post-hardcore the 90s would not be what it was without the alternative college Rock of the 80s
It's so calm, yet romantically dark.
This whole album is just... Transcendent. Someone else commented that there’s something special about this song. I feel the same. EVOL is totally special and they captured something from beyond
it has a quality of indigenous music. Incantation, ritual, chant.

When this came out, mtv was pushing corporate rock and hair metal. This song and video offers such a stark contrast between music as art and music as mere product. A cheap video off of an indie record and it holds up better than the big budget mtv hits of its era. It really is special.

Man.. i just wish i was alive earlier to see them in a show before they split. It's one of my favourite band but i'm sure it was a great experience to see all of them playing together.
I was lucky enough to see them in 2009 on the Eternal Tour, my mind was blown, it was amazing.
@@sonicleaves Saw them on mushrooms at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in 1999. Best rock show I've ever seen. Thurston still looked like this skinny teenager with the floppy hair. The sounds were so lush. I felt like a dog trying to bite waves at the beach as Lee's beautiful guitar tones lapped up to the gallery.
Managed to catch them at The Barrowlands twice, once in the 1990 and 2004, caught them at T in the Park festival one year as well. The 1990 gig was a life changing moment , I had never seen anything like it, I swear I have hearing damage as a result, complete sonic assault 👍
Saw them open for Pearl Jam to this day never seen/heard anything like it. They had a screen behind them just showed people walking the entire set.

whats crazy about this band and esp this song is its completely timeless. this is 1986 but it doesnt sound like 1986. it can be just as relevant today. maybe even moreso today.
Mid to late 80s was a fantastic time for underground rock. Everything started getting really interesting when early 80s hardcore started to break down.
It totally sounds like 80s but just in Sonic Youth style
sonic youth predated so many sounds of alternative and indie rock it's amazing. the velvet underground of the 80's.

This video (and song) is what turned me into a Sonic Youth fan. First saw it in a common room of an Ohio University dorm, spring of 1987 (back when MTV showed videos!). Blew me away. Bought "EVOL" and "Bad Moon Rising" at School Kids Records the following day.
Hey, I'm from Athens (actually The Plains - remember that village, about 5 miles away?). Born in '79, went to OU for a year and then transferred to OSU. Sonic Youth fan too. I enjoyed your comment, especially the School Kids reference.

I'm suprised MTV showed this video since Sonic Youth was mostly underground in the 80s. Then again they probably showed it late at night or something. Wait a second....that sounds nice actually.
MTV showed videos throughout the aughts, just in diminishing quantities. Their 90: original programming was the minority. Anyone remember Dead At 21 with Jack Noseworrhy?

I’m just now starting to dig deeper into SY’s catalogue before the Goo/Daydream era so I had NO IDEA they ever sounded like this… completely blown away. This feels way ahead of its time… can anyone recommend other music like this from that era??
I don’t have a suggestion but I’d love to find more material similar to this sound as well!

It's just so incredible listening to this again after so many years- EVOL was both dreamy,radical and way off the grid with what was expected for US guitar bands from the mid-late 80's ...there was no template so it all sounded new not contrived in any way. And it still sounds new .

This was one of the first SY songs that I fell in love with as a teenager. It was many years ago, but listening to it reminds me of that feeling of fascination for having discovered something so special. While I love the entire discography of the band, the first albums hold a special place in my heart
Check out the album "Spinhead Sessions", fully instrumental recordings from this Evol era, much in the mood and dreamy atmosphere of this song, harmonics, reverb drums, slow tempos. Very different to Made in the USA ost, longer and more solid tracks. This period is one of their peaks. Vinyl sounds amazing.

I remember hearing this for the first time in my uni during break, time just stopped and i fell in love immediately with the song.
Sonic Youth makes me feel the same inside today (im 41) as it did 25 years ago, I can't think of another band I can say that about. And really it has to be the right day or I can't do to much of it, its just to cathartic.
PS- May favorite SY memory was body surfing to Diamond Sea in the early 90's at Lollapolooza, as if a dream)

I’m happy you guys or whoever runs this continues to upload. I’ve listened to basically everything you guys have gone on to do but haven’t had the pleasure of see a lot of the videos since I was too busy being a egg in my madre in your prime, haha. You guys influenced a lot of my music taste and writing. I bought Washing Machine at a thrift when I was 13. Bought it to put the album art on my wall but it ended up being one of my favorite albums till this day at 22. Just a reminder that some people (many) seized it when it was going off back in the day...artifacts of sincerity that are timeless. The Youth will always care enough and be radical enough to leave things like this behind in time.

I went through a time where I was taking acid nearly every weekend. I was listening to SY, Tera Melos, early Black Sabbath, Santana. When I mean to tell you I felt sometimes like I was having an out of body experience while listening to SY and Black Sabbath, I mean I feel like I lost my mind a little bit. Love the feeling of losing my mind. I know that sounds terrible.. but idk I really liked the feeling. I was testing my shit too. So I know for a fact I wasn't tripping on drain-o. Lol
