I just started coloring and attempting to draw a bit at age 66. I have become bedridden and thought I would give this a try to focus my mind. I have zero talent but love color and love flowers and beautiful landscape pictures too. I very much enjoyed.your lesson and will keep your advice in mind. Thank you so much for your calm, patient and clear instruction.
Connie, I think you're mistaken when you think you have no talent. You obviously have a love of colour and beauty and that's a gift. So off you go and draw something.
Connie just enjoy what you do. I too at 60 odd have rediscovered colouring and like you have zero talent but for the past three years have trouble sleeping colouring helps quieter my mind. I found enjoyment and peace which helps me sleep. Hope you too can find a world of colour and fun. Wish you well
Janie uses a battery-powered Sakura, Staedtler, or Helix as her electric eraser. And for pencils, Caran d’Ache Pablo, Faber-Castell Polychromos, and Sanford Prismacolor (depending on the pigment and the softness or hardness of the pigment used--Prismacolors tend to be softer than the Faber-Castells).
wow you are an excellent teacher ..how you break down techniques to simple steps .I am impressed with how you explain the details ..Are you an actual teacher? Not anyone has been so precise with showing and explaining how to actually use your strokes efficiently to make a pattern and /or the blending effect on the apple . I love your talents .
instead of sharpening so often, if you still have quite a bit of lead left but its gotten a bit blunt or dull.. grind the lead on some sand paper to sharpen it again. this way you will use as much of the already showing lead before you need to actually shave off the wood casing to get more lead. your pencils will have a much longer life span by doing this. especially if you're using the likes of polychromos, prismacolor or luminance pencils etc.
I use an emery board to clean off the color from blender pencils. A whole package at the dollar store is a steal. I never thought to resharpen a colored pencil point with them but I will now. What a terrific way to get the most out of the Polychromos. Thx for the great idea!
Ronald Bryant Its the Colored pencil explorations by Janie Gildow. I love this book. Probably my fav out of a stack and I do mean a stack of books. She is such a great artist.
Interesting. I hate to sharpen my pencils too much. :P I also rotate the pencils, like you do, but I only use a sharpener when the tip is getting too short. The sharp point you get at the tip from rotating the pencil is all I need for making sharp details. The flatter areas around the tip works perfect for colouring larger areas smoothly. When the pencil tip is too long and sharp I think it's very hard to get a nice and even result. Also, I don't wanna waste the pencils. :D But anyway, great tips and great art. You're very very good! :)
I try to savor every bit of led before i sharpen. I even have a jar that i save all my scrapped color led to potentially use in a later piece. Like a jar full of gray lightfast powder. Good to use for filling in areas with a sofft tool.
+Maricela Amezcua It's always hard to use new stuff. It's like walking on a beautiful new blanket of snow; you wanna enjoy it, but you don't want to lose the perfection either.
Hi there, Janie recommends to buy the best you can afford with an auto stop and spiral blades. Try to find one with a short distance from opening/guide to blades to get the long points. Best wishes!
This is so helpful! Just one question. I've heard a number of arttists warn to not put color pencils into an electric sharpener because they will gum up the blades and also the pencils are much more likely to break because they are so much softer than graphite. How do you feel about this?
+Jeff C I don't know how often you sharpen your pencils but a good way to put a good point on your pencil is, when it starts to wear down just run it across a fine grit sandpaper and it will only sharpen the point and not grind it down as much as a pencil sharpener. Hope this helps.
Can someone please tell me where I can get one of these colored pencil cases like in the video? Or the brand or something --- I've been searching for ages
+Cally Spencer I think it's a Global Art pencil case. They make them in leather and canvas, in a few different sizes. I believe that's the largest capacity, which holds 120 pencils. Do a Google search for 'global art pencil case' and you should get some links to places to purchase.
+Francis Spencer Hello, just to let you know I did a search for them a couple of days ago and the best cases and pricing are at Amazon.com. Just go to Amazon.com and do a search for colored pencil cases. Good luck.
Hi AYokMizumi, Janie uses a variety of surfaces in her complete video. This list should help. Enjoy! White paper: Fabriano Artistico Extra White HP 140# and Strathmore Windpower vellum BristolBlack board: Letramax 2-plyBlack paper: Strathmore ArtagainColor: Crescent Rag Mat
True, manual sharpener might take a little cup to get all the wood, but they don't break the lead as much as an electric one does. However, it needs to be of quality, or else it won't be any better than an electric one.

I’m 67 and just started too. Fibromyalgia keeps me from my sewing and other crafts most of the time. Hope you enjoy it.

I just grind them a bit on normal paper. :) Works too.

Amazing
I find stippling very therapeutic. It's like how some people find whacking a punching bag is relaxing.
This is so helpful! Just one question. I've heard a number of arttists warn to not put color pencils into an electric sharpener because they will gum up the blades and also the pencils are much more likely to break because they are so much softer than graphite. How do you feel about this?
This could be true, but if you routinely sharpen graphite pencils as well, it seems to clean the blades up fine. Just what I do, and it works for me.

what type of pencil sharpener?
Thank you for your reply :)
Janie,
What electric sharpener do you use? Mine just quit and I'm in the market.....

+Cally Spencer Janie uses several different brands of color pencils: Caran d’Ache Pablo, Faber-Castell Polychromos and Sanford Prismacolor. Enjoy!

All I needed to know about colored pencils since kindengarten that no one had never told me.
Does anybody know which kind of paper was being used?

Why is ARMY literally everywhere...
I was told to use a manual sharpener, not an electric..true or not
True, manual sharpener might take a little cup to get all the wood, but they don't break the lead as much as an electric one does. However, it needs to be of quality, or else it won't be any better than an electric one.

Faber-Castell. I could just barely catch the script on the blue pencil.
She requires a tremendous amount of development in her gradation.
I will use watercolour instead of color pencils.
Those look like some damn expensive pencils ._.
