What a singer! Her repertoire was amazing. Here we see her singing her favourite composer. She adored Salome, Elektra, Arabella, Ariadne auf Naxos, and Der Rosenkavalier.

Magnificent. She was in her artistic prime in 1977 and has just the right kind of voice for the Four Last Songs: silvery and lyrical, soaring effortlessly in the high passages with enough volume in the lower notes. Her fraseggio is more Italianate than Germanic but oh my goodness that endless respiratory reserve, long lines of elegant cantilena! At 20:12 for the line "So tief im Abendrot" she sustains a 20-second phrase on a single breath. This is comparable to the very finest recorded renditions by Gundula Janowitz, Jessye Norman, Kiri Te Kanawa and Cheryl Studer (sorry Schwarzkopf leaves me cold). Brava divina Montserrat!

in the studio recording she made it even longer (24 sec)... some critics dislike the tempo she used in this performance (they think it's too slow and too long) but i thought it fits the meaning very well.

Vero momento epico.

I’m always surprised Caballé isn’t mentioned when people talk of the Four Last Songs. She is a consummate Strauss singer (having sung Salome, Arabella, the Marschallin) and has the perfect voice for his music. This is a brilliant rendition.

How lucky that we were able to hear this music sung so magnificently. AND better yet that it has been preserved for the generations to come. As long as there is Mankind and Mankind can listen, then La Caballe and every musician on that stage is eternal.

RIP

  • @GeorgiNM

I don't think anyone has ever sung this at a level of musical complexity even remotely close to this. Not Schwarzkopf, not Popp, not ANYONE. Caballé was a Strauss expert (renowned for Strauss in actual Germany, before she got any worldwide fame) for more than twenty years at that point. Which is amply evident.

Not her best recorded work in Strauss (some hooting and scoops here and there, some shrill metallic sound in the attacks). But wow are there moments of sheer beauty that make it worth listening to. She's not often remembered for being a Strauss specialist, but she certainly was - having sung Arabella, the Marschallin, Ariadne, and Salome onstage and famously recording Salome (which ranks as one of the best recordings of that role). Her best Strauss might be her recital disk from RCA of the composer's songs for soprano and piano.

It's quite a shame that the orchestra is not identified, as if they were nobodies. Think of the cumulative centuries of hard work that these players put in to make this music and they go unrecognized here.

I love Caballé, I really do, but after listening to this multiple times my conclusion is that this is not for her. To my ears it’s all wrong: lots of very beautiful notes in meaningless words. Sometimes she’s struggling, too. Better left alone - you can’t sing Strauss with a Donizetti style!

Did you know that she spoke perfect German, lived for years in the German part of Switzerland and most of her reperoire was German, including Mozart and Strauss, untill she was "discovered" in NY singing Lucrezia because Horne had to cancel due to some pregnancy problems? Did you know she was probably the best Salome of the century?
