To sing this well nearly 30 years into her illustrious career puts so many of today's singers to shame. She was truly one of the finest sopranos of this era in what was then a deep field of talent.
Maybe my favourite performance of the dozens I've listened to or performed... Price's legato is unsurpassed; her vibrato is perfect, never too much and the colour of her voice is perfect. Have always loved Prêtre..such ease of gesture.. Wonderful all around.
the gentle way she holds the score book, pages, and expressively tells her story... its like the last four last songs are her bedtime story for you, before going to sleep. Ahem.. for a very, very long time :D Bravissimo Dme Price!
Bravo!
Price simply defies the advancing years...her tone is glowing and rich, her breathing is stupendous and above all there's her superb emotion to power the music on. Thanks to LOFTmusic for this absolute joy. Err, any more out there, waiting to be uploaded?
Cet enregistrement ne rend pas du tout justice au timbre extraordinaire et à la somptuosité de cette voix qui nous a enchantés pendant des années à Paris
In the words of the late Soprano, Chloe Owen MEMORIZE! There could have been extenuating circumstances? The performance was flawless and would have been even better had she not been encumbered with the music. I loved how Chloe Owen sang these and she had really set a very high standard but Ms. Price is right up there. Those soaring high notes but rich middle and lower notes. 💕.
I have no issue with any artist having a score there. Its a difficult life we lead, going contract to contract, crossing the globe etc its clearly there as a safety blanket and she sings like an absolute angel - close your eyes and just listen if the score is an issue - what a voice and artist, totally in the service of the music!@@andrewmcintyre4955
This was towards the end of her career. Many famous singers have the music in front of them. Ms Price was not hiding it, but singing as though, it seemed to me, as she was reading her diary or a letter to someone. Very fetching I thought. If you read something of her biographical story you will be even more impressed!
@@petercollins7848, I hear your point, but feel differently about it. To me, it spoils the performance, when the signer reads the music and hasn't memorised it. Each to their own.
Ich finde es ein grosses Manko, wenn bei so einem zentralen Werk des Repertoires nicht auswendig gesungen wird. Hilary Hahn spielt alles, auch komplette Violinkonzerte, auswendig.
Price is wonderful!! But the orchestra sounds terrible to me.. especially the beginning of September.. strange violin staccato. So out of tune.. I am sorry for Ms. Price. She deserves a better orchestra.
Average, Her top notes are a little harsh. She should have them memorized. My Teacher Chloe Owen sang them and hardly took a breath she literally had aqua lung. The tempos were a little fast. Again her lower, middle, upper middle notes are gorgeous. Chloe was a consummate artist and communicator. Her recording of them are available through Boston University Mugar Memorial Library.
She did have them memorized. You can find earlier recordings on YT (Abbado and Sawalisch dating back to more than 10 years prior to this recording) where she sings without the music and managed everything in one breath.. Here she was nearing the end of her career and she felt her memory could sometimes fail her during performances so she reverted back to the music in the autumn of her career

Beautifully sung, up with the best! Has that ‘germanic’ feel that the songs require. Not everyone has it.
Great tonal music, giving us a farewell, a promise to another world .......Thanks Mr.Strauss.........................
emouvant...molto sentito il testo detto in maniera sublime...Pretre tappeto di musica divina ...Strauss ferever.
Thank you for sharing this fine performance.
Such a glorious voice. Beautiful performance of these my favorite songs. Bravo!

Hauntingly beautiful.

We know. You had the same criticism 4 years ago.

Wonderful Dame Margaret! This Strauss Gala Concert was recorded in 1989.
Many thanks for the year indication!
What year did this wonderful concert happen?
Charlotte Margiono, and Jessye Norman for me.
Peut être pas dans un de ses meilleurs soirs avec un orchestre moyen et un chef plutôt absent. Mais que de beaux restes….
Date or at least year?
date?
It sounds good, but I want to find someone, who's not looking at the music!!!!!!!!!!!!
Charlotte Margione, Jessye Norman.

John RONDEAU just because she was your teacher doesn’t make her better than anyone else.
@@revmiguel2000 It's not simply a case of her being my teacher she too was flawed as am I however she was a consummate artist.
It's very nice that you think your teacher sang this so well, but I'm not sure how that's relevant to this video...

What a terrible conductor! He seems to have no idea about this work, what it's for.
Glorious, so deeply beautiful
