- Wildflower honey cake is a very old-fashioned cake made with my personal favorite kind of honey, produced by the happiest bees (I will explain my controversial theory in the video). In case you didn’t know, cakes made with only honey have so much more flavor than cakes made with plain sugar, and the batter method is one of the easiest ever. Enjoy!

As a kid I was watching you religiously. Then I lost my account. I forgot your name and googled "and as always enjoyyy" THERE YOU WERE
Happy story
Chef, you won't ever be forgotten. I've seen you name-checked by many of what I consider to be the greats (J. Kenji Lopéz-Alt, NYT cooking chef's, etc.). You've more than made your mark.
...but don't stop making videos yet though. I love them!
One flower honey. Nothing beats genuine Tupelo Honey which will never crystallize, plus great flavor. I collect honey. In Sicily Italy I bought Millefiori honey which means thousands of flowers, fantastic flavor, dark and deep.
When in the US Navy and in France 1962 and 1063, we took a tour through the Alps and stopped at a wonderful restaurant with a million dollar view on the side of one of the mountains for dinner. They had a fresh salad, incredible roasted chicken, fresh sides, and for dessert they served a cake that was soaked in a honey and rum syrup with strawberries and thick whipped cream. It was so good it was the dessert of dreams.
Lovely!
It must have cost a fortune.
@@antonboludo8886 Paid for by the American taxpayers. Must have been a nice vacation.
Thanks for your service. Glad you enjoyed the Alps and France.
Wow, it must have been wonderful to have recalled the desert. Thanks for serving and sharing.
You were there in 1063? Man, you old! And I want your secret. ;)
"Every single day ... same flower ..."
Michelle: Oh?
😅
The Coolidge of honeys.
Hold on there...If you have hundreds or thousands of Bee's out gathering nectar, who knows which flowers are being tapped?
your videos really got me into cooking, i appreciate your existence Chef John! 🙏🏽 ❤️
Orange blossom honey is ✨the best✨!!! 🤤😻😻
I used mangrove honey on top and it was incredible!
Honeybees are flower constant actually. They are wired to prefer the same type of flower they try first and deem appropriate if offered in abundance. The happy bee with a smorgasbord of wild nectars is still cute though.
Could single bees from the same hive prefer different flowers?
@@pkmnan00bismaybe, but remember that they communicate to each other the location of the best flowers so they will tend to visit the same areas.
I watch these videos with my kids very often, they do Chef John impersonations and puns all the time. Not a library, but you have mimics and a mixing method! 😊
"Every single day... the saaaaaammmme flower..." LOLOLOL!
I was searching for honey cake literally yesterday... and then you come out with this!
Love when synchronicity happens!
Little known fact: Chef John gets all his episode ideas by reading the minds of viewers. Thanks for contributing this time!
A few weeks ago he did it to me with the Spanish Tortilla episode, so you're welcome for that.
thank you, I've been looking for a honey cake recipe which actually uses honey
You've BEE'n
@@HansMaximum that joke is a BUZZkill ;;)
As a beekeeper, I approve! Oh, local honey when you can.
Up here in Prescott and Prescott Valley they have two Honey Stores that harvest their own. Gonna have to send THI$ recipe their way!
I have some nice honey I want to use and some buttermilk I don't know what to do with so this is perfect
Chef J, you just keep on giving. I made this yesterday. Magnificent, thank you, thank you
I wonder if orange blossom honey would be good for orange sweet rolls.
Yes, it will. Try it, you won't be disappointed.
Definitely. Fire weed might be good as well.
Yes!
Chef John shelf of cookbooks at the library
This looks beautiful, and I am sure tastes as good as it looks. Thank you, as always.
Looks so delicious Chef John!! 😋💜
My dude, i cannot even begin. You make some beautiful food
Honey has a floral taste... no surprise. I will make this cake. It looks great. I love honey... my wife and the bee stuff.
That is SO sweet :) Just like honey!
Opened RUclips to search for a cake recipe. First video is Chef John making cake. RUclips knows me so well
Looks delicious....totally love all your recipes ❤
Love the wildflower honey for my earl grey tea
Honey is sooo expensive these days, but it looks delicious John. Like you I'm a firm believer variety is the spice of life, but I also have to admit Orange Blossom honey is my favorite. Thanks John for another great recipe.❤️🐝👍
If you don't have toothpicks, try a piece of spaghetti. Trust me, it works.
And if you are in a pickle, use a butter knife or a fork.
Personally, I use a razorblade. 😉
Yum. That looks like a winner. Thanks.
Definitely making this!
Would love to try this.
Looks yummy!
Cheers from Costa Rica. 💕🇨🇷 This looks amazing!
Oh man I know I’m gonna love this it’s perfect for me
Caramelized honey is a phenomenal add-in for bakes! It's sort of a sweetener equivalent of browned butter. Claire Saffitz has a recipe for a pumpkin pie that uses it, and it is, in my opinion, *the* pumpkin pie.
Incidentally, did y'all know that some pollenators have evolved so closely with a specific plant that they get most of their pollen from only that plant? There are even some pollenators can *only* get pollen from the specific plant they pollenate! They're very picky eaters lol
Would you be able to start listing flour in grams? Whenever I use your delicious recipes I end up having to add a significant amount more flour, I’m guessing because you probably dip-and-scoop with your measuring cup, while I spoon mine in.
Chef John, you are definitely the Tower of Power of when to use a wildflower…
🌸💜🌷 Yum ! Purple Wild Violet Pancake Syrup would be good with this ! (It was purple !)
My dad made it in the early 1970’s
from wild violets. 🐝
I have a ton of leftover Hush Puppies from our youth group Idea Conference last night. I think I'll sub those for the sliced almonds. Thank you Chef John.
Mad honey from Nepal would make your cake a memorable experience.
I have been looking for a interesting honey cake recipe 😮
Looks like it would be a great base for an apple tart/cake.
looking intensely at the honey bear thinking about bakeing this! 🍯 🍰
Two terms of endearment in one recipe!
7:26 But Chef John, if you include both sugar and honey, that would make *three* terms of endearment in one recipe!
Nice.
Have you tried pumpkin blossom honey? It is my favorite honey
Good recipe ! I will probably try it. Will a bit of rhum in the syrup improve the overall taste ? Or some orange liquor like cointreau ?
When you say "completely cooled" what you really mean is "after at least an hour in the refrigerator." :D
This would go so well with the cup of coffee I am drinking 😊
The Safeway at Redhill Shopping Center in San Anselmo,Ca had a cake just like that one. I think they called it a Russian Tea cake. This was back in the 80's - my mom bought one just about every week. Yum yum 🙂
Wish it could be made without eggs🫤 looks delicious!
It must be heavenly flavoured 💖☺️💖☺️💖☺️🌈🌈🌈
Delicious! Could one add cornmeal to this cake batter?
Glenn - from Glen & Friends cooking - sometimes will bake a cake, and will mention something about knocking out the air bubbles by settling the cake.
You can see he has something to say about it, but doesn't mention the fact he has had so many comments on his cannel saying "So, give it the ol' tappa-tappa...?"
As you use to say: that cake looks "vantastic". Definitely gonna try
One is never nut free if Chef John is in the vid.❤
Yum
Awesome recipe chef, please show japanese mazesoba recipe please 🥺 please
YUMMMMM !
I’ve made the french apple cake about 37 times since you posted that video, but it looks like I’ll be making this one 38 times.
Chef John sleeping on the couch tonight 😆
Can you do a video on Haluski?
Maybe the flower is tired of the same bee every. single. day.
Ever think of that? 😆
Where is the cayenne pepper?
😂😂😂
This is similar to the cake we eat in Germany for funerals, but you need some whipped cream
same flower
2:03 "not just one, but..." got me shouting: "that second cup of cheese"
Chef John make Filipino chicken adobo please!!
Baklava calls for a honey & water mixture that is heated and poured over the philo and butter layers after baking. True story: I had recently had a redo of my 50-year-old-still got the same stove and other stuff kitchen. I decided to make baklava and put the honey & water on to heat up, and the baklava was just coming out of the oven. New glass-topped stove. Turned my back at the wrong time. Honey and water mixture boiled over. Glass top pitted. Permanently. So lesson learned - When Chef John tells you to be careful and not let the honey boil onto your stove - listen and learn.
I want to be the bee that doesn't get yeeted from the hive for winter 😂
Havent watched yet, but from what Ive heard lately, if you can find Limnanthees/Meadow Foam wildflower honey, it's one of the best tasting honeys in existence. Also a little expensive I think though...
Most honeybees collect dexter from multiple sources, not just flowers.
I don’t think I’ve ever tasted wildflower honey. I’m in Arizona and my favorite is mesquite honey.
I made this cake and I have to be honest that the oil was oozing out of it while it baked…and the honey in it browned a lot. It was just too much butter (and I love butter). I know this is considered foolproof but in my case I was disappointed (and I enjoy cake a lot, especially soaked cakes like this). It went in the bin after two pieces.
I think the flour measurement is off by a factor of two.
Same flower..
“The same flower. Everyday.” I wasn’t expecting this to be a video essay against marriage.
I'm beeing off to get me some sliced almonds because I think this is a bees knees kind of recipe😋
I dont want to be a bee I just want to be. Happy
I love cake. Is it safe to cook honey? I have read and heard otherwise.
Hey, European fan here! This got my attention and I tried to make it. But I'm pretty sure that despite my bread attempts the conversion to weights was off. But are you sure it's only 1 cup of flour (~125g) for all the honey, butter, and eggs? I ended up with a fairly soggy cake (still tasted good, but).
I'm guessing maybe double that? Or at least that's what I'll try next time.
That's pretty fly for a pie guy.
can this be done with a stand mixer or is it recommended to use a hand mixer?
Hello! 👋🏽 😊
Would a diplomat cream with some honey added work with this?
You are the Don Juan of your honey cake and flan.
🤗🤗🤗
Dear sir do you have a recipe for a Hazelnut Creme pie !
Ironic, bc Mrs Chef John said the same thing about having to get nectar from the same limp stem everyday
from now on when i forget to take the butter out i will call it a chef john
Please do Chicken Imbottitto
I would love to try this recipe, but isn't heating up honey bad for your health?
7:32 Hello John from Sacramento CA. This is lovely and sounds very tasty but I hope you don't mind saving me some grief by not showing the same flower for the rest of your life part😊 to my bride of 18yrs
I keep telling my wife that. I musty collect the sweet nectar from many wildflowers.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Why does the “the same flower every day” bit at the beginning sound like he’s trying to explain himself to Mrs. Chef John? 🤔
Bienenstich?
You should have some library wings named after you! Give me the recipe and I'll bring it to the chef at my local library. Breaded or naked?
Is cheesecake cake, or pie?
The bees don’t care
--->beextremelycareful
Honestly this cake recipe seems pretty similar to your granola cookie recipe that I've been adapting a bunch recently. The major differences are the amount of eggs and butter and of course the use of honey instead of sugar (and, uh, oats lol), and the fact that you're making it all together in one pan. Though, I have made the cookies into bars by putting them into 8x8 pans to great success. I think it's pretty interesting how basically the same ingredients can result in different treats depending on how you prepare them.
