- This drum tutorial will help you get La Grange up and running. It's a fantastic classic song with plenty happening on the drums. The main groove might be a bit tricky but it's an excellent left hand workout. Enjoy!

I bet you do, because you are showing so much love and concern, not only a crude ego: ‘look at me what I can perform’ , what realy makes You a great and appealing teacher. In my case; Im a 36 y.o. ex- durmmed, punk mostly (psychologist by vocation), never in touch with rock classic and now in situation to play with and help someone who loves it. And to learn a bit of new. So, I admire not only to your skill and compentence, but also to your senese to transfer - not just to show, but how to love (it). I don’t think people see it much very often and it’s an awesome character matter. Not to go to far, now focus on the music and drumming, Cheers mate!

What I especially like about these lessons, is that they are demonstrated on a basic kit. As Mike Shrieve showed on the Soul Sacrifice, Woodstock video, great drummers can make a small kit sound like a large one. That's where technical skill really comes into play.

Really brilliant lesson. It really was a challenge for my (useless) left hand and I went back to my rudiments to pick up some speed. I was plateauing at around 120 bpm for some time but managed to pull through and am really happy that I perservered. It is really rewarding when it all comes together. Thank you very much for this lesson.

What I like very much is how modest you are, not like some "drummers", surrounded by 25 hi-hats and 77 tom toms, instead, there is just a normal drum set and you certainly know how to teach us how to drum, thank you very much
Max Brod right. Point is if you know what you are doing it doesn’t really matter how much stuff you got, you are still going to sound great. The rest is bonus, like a little spice added too and already tasty dish. Otherwise it’s more like piling on the salt on something bland

I have studied all the various RUclips videos of La Grange. There are a few live ZZ Top versions. Although this tutorial demonstrates an excellent and useful shuffle, if you listen carefully to Frank Beard he is ALTERNATING the shuffle between kick and snare. The right hand is straight quarter notes. " And one " is kick " And two " is snare ect... Kick and snare are shuffling. The authentic ZZ Top feel is actually easier to play than what is presented here.

Very informative and practical lesson for me, as I have been working on this song for a few weeks since our band picked it up as a cover tune.
Although, I would like to say that it makes more sense to me for the left hand to do the busy work on the rim section, and the right hand to stay steady on the quarter notes, since the left hand will be busy on the snare as well, and the right hand will be staying steady on the quarter notes later in the song on the ride cymbal.
I’ve modified my routine to include that. What do you think?

Can you try Waitin' for the Bus and Jesus Just Left Chicago? There are a few 13 bar sections and some anticipated patterns moving into different sections of Waitin' for the Bus. The quick snare, bass, hi-hat in the intro is tricky too. You did a great job with Le Grange.

Great lesson & I have a question about the INTRO-rim pattern:
What is the technique called when you play only on the rim of the snare? -
I would like to play patterns/fills where the rim and snare are mixed together, but I can't find any good videos for this kind of play.
I do find "Rim-Click" or "Sideclick" or "Crossstick", but this is always the technique where you put your hand on the snare and make the click like this.
What I'm looking for is the kind of playing on the rim that you demonstrate in the intro, where you play with BOTH sticks on the rim.
Is that unusual or does it harm the snare that nobody plays or shows this technique? I can't find any videos about this.

I don’t have a specific name for it, I would just say “play on the rim”. But I also had a look for videos and rim shots and rim clicks take up all the search results... maybe you’ll have to make up your own beats!
It doesn’t damage the drum (unless you absolutely beat it to death and warp the hoop) so get creative and see what you come up with!

Pas certain que la Snare suive le Kick. L'assise du rythme est donnée par le Kick. Toute la difficulté est d'avoir un son net et précis pour que le groove avec la guitare soit efficace.
Man when I try to play this shuffle the way everyone says with the left hand shuffling in time with right foot it just does not feel right with the music? I don't know how you change what your feeling?
There’s no harm in playing it your own way! That being said though, keep working on the left hand hand shuffle (cos it’s a great exercise) and then come back to this in a few months. Maybe your feeling will change 😄
fuck it's hard to shuffle the bass drum that fast. Live i'd just play quarter notes or else a mic'd boomy bass drum might muddy the whole mix

ok with all but 3.15 fill isnt the correct one, different in album and you can watch it in his live also.
You need 2 Bass drums to copy Franks work exactly! 8~)

I don't typically "thumbs down" on much, but since this video is a technical breakdown of (presumably) the original recording, there are a few critical errors. Namely, 1: the opening riff on the snare drum rim is a simple shuffle with the right hand, the left alternating between filling in the triplet and flaming and 2. The BD pattern is not a shuffle - it is straight quarter notes. So, the base groove pattern is quarters on the kick and ride, a "Texas-style" shuffle with the left hand. I think "alternative explanations" might confuse less-experienced players, and lead them to think they can't play the tune (for example, shuffling the BD at tempo might be difficult, and unnecessary, as this isn't in the original recording).. Cheers.
Great feedback. I think I really over thought my transcription on this song. After watching the ZZ Top documentary on Netflix I was like “ah maybe I have overcomplicated things”. I should go back and listen again.
Re. the intro, there's definitely a drag in there. On the 2 and 4 it's flams with the occasional L and R hands played in unison instead.

I don't like this shuffle way ( very "messy" ) ; it s right and correct but not the one played by the original. so ....I think la grange can be played with a lot of ways...you just need to feel it...

I'm 90% sure the kick is 4 on the floor. I also find that the opening fill sounds more like the original with the left hand on the high-hat and the right hand on the snare. If you listen, the first hit on the snare is a grace note. It's tough to achieve that "feel" crossing over. Plus, the HH is hit pretty hard. Left hand on HH and right hand on snare allows you to better control the velocity on the HH. Try it and you'll see what I mean.
