Hey guys! The number one question I have been getting in the comments is what settings are the gun at.
Fluid wide open
Fan wide open
Pressure 35 psi
Air valve on the bottom, wide open
Can you paint my car?
You could do a whole video on just adjusting the gun!
What brand paint do you use?? And what sealer 1st coat I am new on this thks
For all three stages ?
Great video! I am in Trinidad and I tried this gun. The base went on smooth enough but the clear would not and I got a lot of orange peel in the finish. Could it be pressure too low, clear too thick or both. This is my first attempt at painting a car. Thanks for the videos they help a lot.
Thanks for a very honest evaluation. I built a multi-million dollar construction company starting out with Harbor Freight tools... still have some of them. I progressed to pro quality as I could afford it. I’m tired of snarky comments. A rock is a hammer in the right situation! God bless.
This may be my favorite quote of all-time. Thanks
Bill congratulations man!
God bless you. Thank God for wise foundations. If the foundation is GoOD you always have solid ground to build on.
I've used this paint gun to spray several parts on modern cars because they are small now a days, unlike classic American cars...each fender & door was the size of a table, & hoods the size of a king size mattress. Since I'm not a "professional," the cheap harbor freight paint gun has worked great on the once in a while Asian car panel that I have to pain. I yes, the result is great. Obviously the spray gun is cheaply made. You shake it and you can hear every part rattle, especially the trigger.

Brian’s distance & overlap has the accuracy of a robot. He makes it look effortless. Gun may be ok but his skill set is the main reason the paint looks excellent. I found it helpful to practice the motions with the gun connected to the hose before actually spraying to develop some motor memory. Thanks for all bout videos.
This is probably the other half if not more of why the paint finish came out good on the bumper cover replacement.

i painted a front fender of my car with a high end DuPont metallic paint and clear coat using one of these guns and got totally professional results on the first try with this gun. That was 16 years and the job still looks beautiful.
I’ve used this exact gun but for spraying wood projects, both clear and color have been ran through it. A single gun has lasted me over two years just using lacquer thinner/Acetone for clean up. It’s long retired now, but for $16 ($12 with the coupon when available) you won’t find anything better in said price range, guarantee you that much. You are correct about the gun needing to be cranked way up, which is annoying. However if you use it a couple times for random projects, it’s not bad. If you are new to spraying, you could easily learn on it without breaking the bank, but eventually I’d upgrade to something more quality.
Just painted my miata with this gun. very happy with the results. clear coat didn’t turn out the best but i’m pretty sure it was the actual clear coat itself. After adjusting and learning how to spray it’s honestly a good gun
Used that gun to paint a complete engine with eastwoods 2k matte black and i gotta say I was impressed. Never used a paint gun before and I set it up wide open everything at about 35 psi just like you and the results were outstanding

Good to see a bumper being painted like this with the same hang position as on the car. So many people dont do this and change the metalic laydown against the adjacent panels. I Used to us a clothes stand with thick welding rods and my colours were always spot on against the adjacent panels.
Only way we do bumpers at work.
My issue with doing it like this is you now have a two tone car. No blending?
The camera will do that but no blending on a bumper replacement.
I’ve always been one to believe that the major factors in a good paint job are; the quality of fluids used, the skill of the painter and the regulator. This vid just goes towards solidifying that idea. The only difference the gun makes is like he said - Ease of use and longevity.
@AW 33COM exactly perfect prep. Paint booth does wonders. Good lighting. Quality materials. Gun sucks and just try to use that as a noob. You’ll wish u never bought it. It wastes more product and that cost is wayyyyy more than cheaping out on a decent gun you can get for 200

Beginners or pros with specific needs can make it sing with little effort...
@@daddski1 of course it will work if you f with it enough. It’s still junk. And it will fall apart also you make a beginner struggle to get it to spray decently. Losing money on product is way more costly than being an idiot and wasting hundreds on ruined jobs from a difficult gun to get to work right. So you penalize the beginner and make them pay 5x what a cheap 150 dollar decent gun would be. Smart real smart.
Its similar to talking about really cheap guitars. Yes, a great guitarist can make the $99 guitar at Costco sound amazing. But a beginner, will soon get very discouraged as to the inability to hold tune, poor intonation, rough frets, and bad durability.

I used this to paint a Telecaster guitar body and for small projects like mine, it is pretty good. I have even used their mini detail spray gun but the bad thing about those are they are real tricky to clean properly but they have their place among hobbyists. Brian is right. I wouldn't trust it to paint a car but for little jobs, it's pretty decent.

What a great outcome! I am restoring an antique tractor implement on my channel right now and using that same paint gun. So far I've only shot primer with it but it's done great so far! I also believe it's a great option when working on a project with a budget in mind.
This is probably a good gun for the hobbyist who is going to paint one car.
Thank you Brian. I own that same gun. Your tips are much appreciated.
Those guns are great for what I have used them for from simple stains and clear coats on wood, painting theater sets and custom fabricated items that I make in my shop.
Thank you for this. I will be repainting my '06 Mazda 6 hood Black Ebony and considered using this gun as I don't own any. Even after my dad lent me his excellent gun I considered buying and using this anyway, just to avoid the hassle of trying to return something better than the condition in which it was borrowed. But when you said, "don't use it to clear coat a hood" I said, "welp! That settles it!" Thank you for saving me all the frustration and great video production....Subbed!
Welcome!!!
Like your paint booth and your sweeping back and forth was mesmerizing. Your summary reminded me of driving to work and seeing a couple riding $5,200 carbon fiber bicycles. Never saw them again. I like to get into some activity as cheaply as possible. Can’t ever tell if I’m going to enjoy something.
This means your technique and professionism takes the gone to new levels! good work!
Thank you for showing that clear coat can be actually applied in a gloss finish with such cheap gun. Every single time I tried to paint something for my cars, I failed in the clear coat step, the end result had massive orange peel. I have the feeling that it is hard for the gun to atomize the clear, rising the pressure kind of helped a little bit. Never added thinner to the clear, maybe it’s worth trying.
Maybe you're too close to the parts, or you are moving too slow and too much clear is building up to the point that you get orange peel. Always try moving a little faster than usual because you can always come back to respray to compensate if you are getting results like an overspray by moving overly fast. Practice your hand, arm, & body movement with the paint gun for a while without actually painting just so you can build up a sense of how you will be painting; some people freeze-up a little as they are spraying. This will help to give you some confidence. I've just finished painting a fender & a front bumper cover for my Prius, using this same 1.4 paint gun that I had for 2 years when I painted my mustang's fender. When I was first learning how to paint, it was the clear coat that was the nerve -racking part of spraying. Mess up on the clear coat & the whole work has to be redone.
This just proves aside from materials and prep, what you pay for in a paintjob is the painter's experience.
Great video. I like your explanations and frank assessment of this cheap gun in the hands of a newbie. Good stuff, keep it coming. Hadn't heard, "Don't over think it, it's just paint!" before and got a laugh out of that Thanks Brian. smart move doing this on the loaner car.
Your videos are always on topic and useful, thanks
Been running a body shop for 9 years. I use a devilbiss tekna for my clear and a devilbiss gti for my color. I bought this exact gun for 14.99 yesterday at harbor freight. And I’m seriously astonished with the results. This gun is amazing. Only thing that bothered me was the special wrench wasn’t included lol. Lots of grease inside the gun when you buy it. Make sure you clean it really good before first use.
And Harbor Freight dos not carry the wrench that doesn't come with the gun so you can't clean the gun it's a throw away gun.

Hey this harbor freight spray gun can so from primer to clear, including metallic, candy, and base. I have been using this very gun for 15+ years most recently painted 1992 Ford LTL 9000 Log Truck and 2004 Ford F250. They have primer, 3 different metallic base colors, Rudy Candy Red, and Clear coat. Would love to share some pictures with you Brian. Candy paint and Clear need to have 44psi air to lay either of the 2. As long as the gun is properly cleaned and stored it will last through years of painting.
Awesome! What PSI do you set the paint and sealer or primer? Thanks!
@@PhillipHall01 You set the pressure to the minimum pressure that will fully atomize the paint. The pressure needed depends on the viscosity of the paint/primer/sealer. Always test the spray pattern on some paper or cardboard before applying.
@@lizardking8388 give us an example please
I use these guns for primer/sealer, and spraying stuff like por-15. I was honestly surprised how well they work 😆
Thank you,you explain everything very well and honestly.
I purchase this gun a few years back just for curiosity because i was skeptical since it was only $15 i tested with dupont chroma base paint/clear and i was actually impressed how good it works the spray pattern is not wide like the more expensive paint guns.i always painted with SATA guns they really last.but this $15 gun is perfect for DIY projects.
They work awesome even for the DIYer. Great results with it painting a Chevy Small Block and a Jeep Straight 6. Used thick ceramic engine paint and a homeowner grade little air compressor. Paint went on beautiful.
It doesn't take much to make a motor look good I let my six-year-old spray paint the motor in my truck there's no way you can screw it up it's a motor
@Ram Well thats your opinion of course, but id say thats a complete lie.
@@losandreas6443 you'd be wrong. A Chevy small block is probably a cast block, with tons of pitting and inconsistency in the surface. You can probably paint it with a brush and people wouldn't notice, provided the mix is thin enough.
@@CafeRacer1975 Your opinion is funny as well, because I do this for a living and can tell. Its just whether the persons doing the job is ok with how it comes out ultimately if not done professionally. This is not a case of probability.
That wrist action is fluid bro. Straight fluid... Noice
I was about to comment that the reason you're getting good results is because you're a professional. But you explained that in your 3.5 rating at the end of the video.
Thank you for the last bit, it's important to explain how someone who's a beginner using a tool made this cheap would have a helluva time getting results like yours.
And could also discourage someone from wanting to learn the craft with their first experience using a 15 dollar tool. Good video overall, very informative, edited and shot nicely, and you're great in front of the camera. I'm gonna subscribe.
Enjoyed this video so much that I watched it again.
I've never sprayed 2K, so I don't know it's spraying characteristics, but for lacquer, this gun has been incredibly good to me. There are some little tricks I've had to learn, but for a cheap gun I bought on a whim, I've never felt the need to replace it. If I thin lacquer about 10%, this gun lays it down nearly perfectly, and with a few fog coats shortly after my last wet coat, the finish flows out and has almost no orange peel. Especially if I fog coat between every wet coat.
I'm considering using it for my first automotive painting attempt. I'm pretty confident that if I carry over the little tricks I use for lacquer, I'll be able to lay down a damn-near-perfect finish.
To anybody reading this and considering the gun; Buy it and use it. Give yourself some time with it to learn its needs, don't try anything too serious until you know the gun well. But I think if you're patient and give it a chance, you'll be impressed with what you can do with it. I build 2k-3k custom guitars and use this gun on all of them. I get absolutely flawless finishes with it, though I do have to do some minimal wetsanding/buffing. But that's to be expected with any gun, even the top dollar ones. Just takes some experience.
Did you paint at 35psi? Aside from a good regulator, what (gallon) capacity air tank is needed for auto bodies (not individual panels)?
@@bobgreene2892 The gun is finicky and sometimes demands different pressures, but that's mostly down to what lacquer and cut strength I'm using. But yes, usually around 35.
As for what capacity for auto work, I can't say with any authority as I never got around to it. But I would imagine you'd really want a 30 gallon tank. That said, if you're doing individual panels, you can probably get away with a 5/10 gallon compressor if it has a decent motor that can keep up. I spray whole acoustic guitar bodies with a 5 gallon Kobalt compressor and it keeps up fine. Probably the same surface area as most auto body panels. Definitely wouldn't try to paint a whole car in place with that setup though.
All that said, I'm still using the same gun and it's still doing great. Had to replace a couple seals with off the shelf stuff. No big deal. Worth the tiny investment for sure.
I bought the two HF guns (small and large) back in 2005 to paint my $90,000 airplane.. Came out great. I'm still using those 16 year old guns for repairs and spray jobs today. Of course I only use them a couple of times a year on average but they still work almost as good to day as when they were new.
First minute into the video and I've already liked and subscribed, what magic is this!🤣
i think over the last few years since i have been painting i have been worried about wasting paint, which caused jobs to turn out not so good...it seems most pros waste a lot( high pressure ,large fan,far distance) which is necessary for a great finish... i learned a lot today...i really think my jobs will come out much better now...thanks
I've used that gun before numerous times and got great finishes
It looks great to me, and for that price it looks excellent ! Sometimes i wonder why those paintshops ask 450 dollar for spraying a fender, let me do it with this one and i will be happy !
Used one of those very same guns on a dark green metallic Chevy Blazer, the job was a door bottom fender bottom and rear quarter bottom, the job came out just great for a shade tree body guy. Bad Chad uses cheap spay guns, says he uses them 3 or 4 tmes the chucks them and gets new ones. Liked the video you were honest and showed that the cheap guns can do the job. 35lbs at the gun,I will have to remember that along with all valves full open .
I'm repairing a pickup I just picked up. Don't need to buy a $500+ gun. It's a one time use thing for me. As long as it lays the paint down decent, I'll be happy. Thanks for the honest review.
Old video I know, but seems like you went into it expecting garbage and got decent! Awesome video. :D
Harbor Freight is a poor mans paradise. Got. Quite to paint my faded hood and roof on a small single cab truck for $3,000. My response: “she ain’t winning any beauty contests and she’s only worth $1,500. Will have to try out the $16 gun.
My dad, three uncles and grandpa all did body and paint collectively with about 175 years experience. So I know body and paint a little. At the end of the day, a major portion of the quality comes down to the person and their talent. Followed by materials. Tools, although important do not make the majority of the paint job importance.
I was never good at body. Paint I became ok. But it definitely ended with my dads generation.

I used that gun for hibuild primers for 10 years. I wouldn’t recommend doing it to a new guy because a good paint job starts with the prep work and that gun makes your prep and sand work twice as hard. Use the best tool for the job, not just the right tool for the job. Great video sir.
I think spending the paint gun for $15 or even less is amazing for smaller projects! I think you're 3.5 rating is fair for other Professionals who use the gun every day but it's a 5 for weekend DIYers!
Especially for a motorcycle or small stuff this gun will do just fine
I drilled out the tip on this a bit and painted many portions of the house I built with it. I still get water based stuff through it but he is correct about it eating air. For a diy guy thought it's a nice tool
