I started taking Magnesium glycinate 325mg, 10mg of Melatonin and sometimes add in a THC/CBD/CBN gummy or tincture. This combo has allowed me to get at least 5-6hrs of rest at night. Prayers to all who suffer, this is an extremely frustrating syndrome!

    Just listened to this video.
Have had restless leg syndrome since a child . Am now 78 and have learned that magnesium threonate which is the least likely form to cause loose stools, works very well.
Each night awaken with the need to move the legs and get up and take 3 1000mg capsules.
It works well - back in bed after 10 minutes or so begin to get sleepy and fall asleep again.
Some nights it happens again so follow the same routine.
Am very grateful for this remedy and sleep very well most nights using it.
Have learned over the years as he suggested not to use alcohol or caffeine which helps alot.
Also not to get overtired as this always brings it on - am very tired and then suddenly wide awake with restless legs.
    Hope this helps someone.

This is the best way I can describe what it feels like. The feeling of "losing your stomach" when going down, forward on a ferris wheel. That sensation that may make some ppl quiver as they feel their stomach feel quivery on the ferris wheel ,going down. THAT is the sensation in the legs. If anyone can relate to that "losing the stomach sensation" If anyone else can relate to this analogy please share

Same goes for me, like when u feel excited and you have "butterflies" in your belly its equivalent feeling on my legs... Its really hard to sleep and it feels like i need something heavy to press on my calves so that I won't feel it.
I don't generally feel like pins & needles nor the "static" feeling when u sit on ur legs for so long.

I've had RLS for about 15yrs & can say if I'm on the 4-5th night of this awful syndrome - sometimes it can make you feel suicidal. I take Sifrol on a high dose but over time it has become ineffectual. My Mother & Aunts all had it. Just feels like torture. Best wishes from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤

    • @denisejames855
      @denisejames855 2 года назад +10

Also in Australia. I've had this, but didn't know what it was, since I was a child, I am now 75. My Mum and Grandma also suffered dreadfully with RLS. Grandma had no meds, she passed away in mid 80s. Mum took Sifrol until she passed away at 90 and I have also been on this for years. I am very active, swim and exercise. I find that if I don't take the Sifrol around 6pm I will be up walking half the night. It doesn't stop it though and in the last year I've begun to have it in my arms. I drink a lot of tea although last cup at 3.30. I have had a small issue of low iron but that corrected next blood test. After listening to this Dr I think I will reduce my Sifrol and see what happens. Would hate this to continue to escalate into the future. It isn't pleasant to be walking around on preferably cold tiles, kicking and tensing to try to stop the sensation it is, I agree, sometimes suicidal thoughts with it occurring so often and so fiercely. I also unconsciously move my feet around a lot, my husband tells me, when I am sitting on the sofa or in bed of a morning having a cuppa. Perhaps this is natures way of helping! Good luck with your RLS.

Jennifer, I have had it for 20 yrs. I deeply empathize with what you say. It takes courage to openly talk about 'suicidal thoughts'... been there, many times. I have been taking Ropinirole 2mg since 2005. My movements got **crazy** in 2018. I even had to quit my job. July through Sept 2018 were the worst months. I have seen about five neurologists, had about five sleep tests done. Iron levels checked (I'm ok but sill take iron sulphate + citric acid (2x500mg)) for better absorption. I have tried Mirapex, no change. Combination of Ropinirol with Gabapentin (help,, sort of, but abandoned for other meds>>), oxycodone (5mg starter, up to 10 mg; helps a lot but knock me down cold. Blessing and a curse, but since I don't work I can deal with this). Tried codeine for a month or so, similar to oxicodone. Yesterday my neurologist (very nice guy, others I fired, bunch of incompetents) suggested to try a combination of Ropinirol with Methadone. Plan is to taper Ropinirole out with increasing levels of Methadone. Then if all works well, taper Methadone away and see how this works. Looking forward for this 2 month experiment. Hoping you the best. Hugs. Take care.

Dr. Berkowski, thank you for describing airlines as torture chambers for people with RLS! This is the very first doctor who is able to explain RLS in detail. I've suffered with RLS for 30+ years. My primary doctor just brushed it away when I mentioned it. I'm being told that physical activity relieves RLS but that has not been the case for me; it makes sense now! According to Dr. Berkowski there's a "sweet spot" for activity levels depending on each individual. My activity has been too intense so I have to find that sweet spot. Thanks so much for this video.

I have had restless legs for over 30 years, about 12 years ago I went to the mid-west for my Mom's funeral, I am petrified of planes, so on the way back home I took the Greyhound. My legs acted up big time. A young person about 18 years old was sitting across from me. I looked over at her an noticed her legs were moving a lot. My RLS just started a few months ago ……seemingly out of the blue. But I lost my dog to cancer not too long ago. We walked a couple miles in a day all over the place. And I have sciatica for which I get injections….very helpful. But when my sciatica is flaring I’m not inclined to go out and walk. Think a combination of lack of activity and grief has slowed me down. The exercises for sciatica seem to help with the RLS as well. And I’ve started taking a calcium magnesium supplement about two hours before bed. So far so good. And I would get another doctor. Your suffering is his job to treat not brush away. Good health to you my friend 🦋

Plane journeys are a nightmare, I wore flight socks once and before the flight took off I already had them removed, I spent a four hour flight standing pacing at the exit door. Restless legs is a horrific syndrome which I have endured for 40yrs with no relief despite all the drugs and supplements. Sleep is a luxury for me so I am grateful for the 2 nights I do get. The endless tiredness and sleepiness is dragging me down and leaves me with no energy. I still hold hope for something new coming on the market to help me .... if not me then for others who suffer from this condition.

The intensity of the sensation varies a lot. When it's bad for me, it feels as if my body is trying to turn itself inside out. Like intense anxious energy is rampaging under my skin. It's the build-up of a shiver that stretches on, never actually shivering. You need to move your legs or body in the same vein as needing to sneeze or shiver.

I have the constant urge to shake my wrists, an uncontrollable spasm so to speak. Feels like my wrists are constantly itching/tingling/forced to move. I only get it at night and briefly after waking up. Doesn't happen all month, maybe only a week out of a calender month. Wouldn't wish this syndrome on anyone. The treatment sounds worse than the disease! I drink a glass of water and take about 800 mg of magnesium. It helps both RLS & cramping which is horribly painful. If you tak mg every night before bed it helps you sleep. So does Zinc. Zinc lets your body manufacture melatonin which is the sleep hormone.

This did not really improve my systems. My Doctor increased the dosage to 2mg per night this immediately stopped the movement of my legs and I thought he had found the answer. After two nights of taking the 2mg my moods changed causing my family to become concerned. I listed all the differences I was experiencing and my Doctor has reduced it now to 1mg for one week and he will be looking into starting from the first medication I had years ago and work through the list as I become immune to each then trying the next on the list. We will see how how this activity works. I have looked at cutting off my legs in the past but this is is not the way to answer the problem.

How many sleep studies have you had? You need to find out exactly what is going on in your brain and the rest of your body. There are ways to treat it. My father found that 400 mg of vitamin D a day helped him with his RL syndrome that’s just managed to help him.
Also going for a walk 2 hours before bed will help as well. Get your family doctor to refer you to a sleep clinic with sleep studies and specialist. You will likely need at least 3 studies. A diagnostic one, one once your specialist has diagnosed the problems and provided treatment. To see if the treatment is working, maybe more if adjustments are needed. Then you will need one to confirm that the treatment is working properly. It took about 6 studies at the University Network Western division.
The sleep study lasts from about 5 pm to the next day. The investigation and data take about 3 weeks to compose into a report. You then see the sleep specialist again and he tells you the results and what is needed to treat you. After you are established on the doctor’s treatment. You will need another study to see how the treatment works. Altogether it took 6 sleep studies under the same clinic and doctor for them to be satisfied with my treatment. My case was severe.

I agree I think the psychological part of it is almost worse than the actual feelings in your legs. Like there's something about being up at 6am when you haven't slept a wink all night because of your RLS and having to just sit with the sensation in your legs knowing that nothing you do can make it stop thats so psychologically draining. Like your brain is just telling you over and over and over that you just have to move your legs and feeling will go away, but you know that as soon as you stop, it will start right up again.

If you simply cannot sleep with RLS, one tip i've used and found great is to kneel beside the bed, and lay your torso down on the bed as usual. You'll need an understanding partner of course because it looks weird, and a high bed isn't ideal either, but when your RLS is really fizzing, sleeping in a kneeling position is really great. At very least, it gets you into "sleep mode" and you can climb into bed then and sleep uninhibited. Try it...

It may help if you haven't got a severe case of it. I have it so bad that I told my GP this week that I'm actually thinking of having my legs amputated as they have told me that there is no more options medication wise..... A friend has suggested that prescription cannabis might help but trying to persuade a GP to do this might be impossible. I read a story about a lady that had her legs amputated, she said even after her legs were no longer there she had what a doctor called phantom symptoms. I think what probably happened is that because it stems from the brain and runs through our body that the restlessness would be in a persons stomach after their legs were amputated. For others suffering from RLS, I want to share what works for me quite effectively. When RLS flares up, I get out of bed and do around 50 squats until my hamstrings are burning. The idea is to "burn" the RLS out. Often, I only have to do this once per night. My symptoms are not pain but a building tingling or tickling sensation in my thighs. It builds until I can't stand it anymore and have to move my legs to relieve it. I do not getting automatic kicking impulses. My father and brother also get RLS, so there is the genetic factor.
RLS is periodic for me. I can go weeks or months without it. I suspect diet and certain foods or lack thereof have a strong influence on it. Perhaps I get certain key minerals through certain foods. I typically eat low-carb but I have noticed that I usually do not get RLS if I eat significantly more carbs (ie - holidays and vacations). This is obviously not conducive to weight loss, but an interesting correlation. Maybe its not the carbs but increased activity during holidays and vacations? Being a whiskey and cigar lover, I do have someone elevated nicotine and alcohol intake. I often smoke a cigar and a pour of whiskey in the evening. I have been experiencing RLS the past six months while being unemployed and, thus, having a much more sedentary lifestyle, so phyiscal activity on a daily basis seems to also be a key factor. I really hopes this helps someone!

I’ve noticed my symptoms are triggered by caffeine, anxiety and inactivity. It is an unintentional, rhythmic movement involving lower back, hip, knees and ankles - almost like bicycling. Walking and massage helps and my electric blanket. I have noticed this since a teen and am now post menopausal and still have it. As long as I don’t get a muscle cramp, I am generally able to fall back to sleep even with the continued involuntary movement.

I had restless legs syndrome, began in my early 20-s, maybe once a week. By my late 20-s, increased to almost every day, in the evenings, hard to fall asleep. I remember going to the movies, I could not sit in that tight chair for the full movie, I had to move my restless legs, or stand & walk about, couple times I just left the building, I could not sit still for 1-hour & a half. About 8 years ago I went to a Homeopathic doctor with my arm, I could not move my arm, pain, strained & torn tendons. He helped me, 90٪ improvement. Anyways, I mentioned to him about my Restless Legs. He told me not enough magnesium, and told me to get Natural (organic) Magnesium plus Calcium in powder form to mix in water. Human body has difficulty absorbing magnesium by itself, the process needs Calcium for good absorption. (Told me strictly NOT to buy Synthetic, or anything in capsules. MUST BE in FLUID FORM, powder dissolved in water ONLY). So, he showed me a good brand "CALM" - Natural (Organic) Magnesium plus Calcium in Powder Form. Bought it, next time when legs began feeling restless, I mixed 2 spoons of powder into boiling distilled water, cooled it down with ice & drank the mix. The feeling of Restless Legs passed within minutes. After 20 years of thinking that this was some kind of genetic illness, I got help. Finally, the syndrome although less frequent, still persisted, but I had a temporary Cure, I was Happy, I took powder with me camping & on longer trips just in case. Then in 2015 I decided to do a Dry Fast, to cleanse toxins out of my body, do a major cleanse. I did a 7-day Dry Fast, I lost about 15kg during process. Since the Fast, had it happen maybe once per 2 month period, then I drank the magnesium-calcium mix and problem gone. In the last 8 years I really cleaned up my diet. And What I noticed is that when I have a day overeating on bad, toxic food, then in the late evening I feel Restless Legs. But this time I am Well prepared. 👍 Wish you Best of Health
Also, Low magnesium is the cause of muscle cramps.

Remedy for me is staying active or sleeping once I feel tired.

Not having listened to your whole program yet (I’m enjoying it very well). Having delt with RLS most of my life in the legs (calves and knees both legs). I’m 71 now and I definitely find it gets worst as I get older and the one connection I can make is as we get older the less active we become. That seems to be one key factor. Getting the legs moving, blood flowing, nerves firing. It is also interesting that when the mind is occupied it is less felt (not all the time but it is noticeable. Meanwhile while trying to sleep, as the RLS feeling comes on that’s all you can think of till you move the limb or just plain get up out of bed. I do realize we can all have a wide spectrum of symptoms but the one thing in common is it’s down right uncomfortable and one must move that limb or area. Thank you for you research, keep up the great work.

Nella, , I have had it for 20 yrs. I have even had 'suicidal thoughts'. My RLS used to be 'painless' until 2018. For pain, my neurologist recommended Oxycodone (5mg to start) and also tried Codeine. Gabapentin also helped for pain for a while (about a year or so). I have been taking Ropinirole 2mg since 2005. My movements got *crazy* in 2018. Combination of Ropinirol with Gabapentin (help,, sort of, but abandoned for other meds>>), oxycodone (5mg starter, up to 10 mg; helps a lot but knocks me down cold. Hugs. Take care

In my 40 years of coping with both severe and intractable RLS/PLMD....I have learned that for me, yes, being a passenger in a car or plane, going to movies, trying to take a nap...are all triggers.....HOWEVER, when my brain remains FOCUSED on a particular mental, visual, or auditory task, (sometimes all three are required) the feeling causing the need to move voluntarily (or involuntarily, if PLMD) ... stops, at least until you end the task or until you are able to fall asleep without symptoms. For me, the onset of sleep is delayed 8 to 10 hours EVERY night. In the beginning, it was only 2-3 hours, but remember, it's a progressive disease. It progresses not only into other areas of the body, but in the duration and intensity. RLS can also be accompanied by PLMD...involuntary 'jerking' movement. I hope that everyone who suffers from this torture finds a medication that works for them. None work for me any more and that's how I had to learn other ways to cope....to add and change the stimuli I mentioned, as necessary, to keep the feeling/movement at bay. I wish you much luck!!

I've been symptom free for over a year. For ages, been doing progressive relaxation to sleep, starting with toes. During the time I was taking a meditation class, noticed that when I relaxed the jaw muscles, it changed the crawling sensation in my legs. Subdued it but didn't stop it. Started relaxing jaw and facial muscles before sleep, trained myself to relax those while half asleep, and also during the day. Biggest difference was when I noticed sleeping on a pillow was putting severe pressure on those muscles. So I started sleeping with pillow above ear, rest of face suspended and not touching anything. The symptoms kept subsiding and stopped. This took somewhere between 1-2 months.

Really hot herbal tea, compression leggings, walking, heating pad, vibrating tools, Magnesium in multiple forms, restless leg pills from the drug store are the basic ones that have worked at various times for me.

About 10 years ago I was at my pulmonologist office for something unrelated and I happen to mention to him what my legs feel like and how often it happened at night. He chuckled a little bit, took out his prescription pad and said take this is called Mirapex. He said his wife also suffered from this. I started taking Mirapex 25 mg and it works like a charm. It literally takes it away every time. I only took it when I started feeling symptoms but through the years I take 50 mg now and I take it every night before bed, it literally completely takes away the symptoms every single time I don't know what causes it actually nobody does I try to figure out what I do on different days and see if there's any common denominator, but to this day I've never come up with one. My mother has suffered with this for years, but she would not take medication from it until recently. At 90 years old she decided to try it and she started crying two days later because it took the symptoms away. Although I didn't know my grandfather, my mother said he suffered from the same thing so obviously there is some genetic component to it if I didn't have Mirapex, I don't know what I would do, I really don't. If you suffer from restless leg syndrome, haven't tried Mirapex I strongly strongly suggest you do literally a lifesaver.

The way I describe it is, when your leg falls asleep.. you have that intense tingle feeling when you move it or touch it? So, not that tingle feeling, but the unbearable sensation that the tingle causes. Like if you keep the leg that's asleep still, not moving it so the tingle doesn't happen, it's the building sensation that you feel. Or when someone is scratching your back, and they just keep scratching in the same spot and it starts to feel really aggitating and makes you squirm.. that feeling, just more intense. And when having an episode, the periods in between the need to move constantly, you just cannot get confortable... like you just walked 10 miles, and you just want to sit, but when you do, it doesnt feel good, it just makes it more apparent.

I'm 43, I can go around 3 or 4 months without issue but then BOOM itll hit me one night and once it starts itll hang around for a week or 2 every single night and then just as it came, it goes away. Till a few months and it happens all over again. It's pretty painful for me sometime in the sense that its SUCH an uncomfortable feeling I have to tense my leg or arm muscles and move them. I'll get up walk around a bit ,then try to get back in bed and nope, it happens again and its like this all night long. I'll be just absolutely exhausted during the day. I am anemic so maybe that's the reason for my RLS however, I havnt always had problems with anemia yet have always had RLS symptoms. I don't take my iron pills as I should so I'm taking them right now because this is just absolutely unbearable now. I'm sick and literally tired of this RLS.

Feels like a tiny surging electric shock that explodes at different points within the muscle then feels like a tickling into a numbing feeling cascading down the the leg. You have no control of the kick. Going through a bout now. Had since a kid. Very random. Thanks for the home remedy tips. God bless.

This condition is not a joke. I have been up many nights with a very uncomfortable sensation having to constantly move my legs and oftentimes my arms, too. I often describe it as almost a tick for lack of a better term. It feels as though I am forced to move my legs and arms in order to provide a temporary relief and the uncomfortable sensation usually comes back seconds later forcing me to move again. The thing he said about a plane being a torture chamber is absolutely true. Long flights are very stressful and uncomfortable.

  • @Hunny.B.e.e
    @Hunny.B.e.e 2 года назад +8

It feels like nerves being fired over and over to move… Tingles. IMO it is painful. I guess the best thing I can compare it to is imagine a light shocking that just makes your muscle spasm.. over and over and over again in your legs. Yeah we control the movement but it’s to alleviate the nerve shock signals basically is what it feels like.

I just feel restless legs particularly after eating, so it’s *the absolute worst at school when I’m forced to sit.* I think I prevent it at night by eating dinner early, at around 3pm and then fasting after that. Also I always walk or workout for 2-3 hours right before bed 😂 I’ve been doing all this for years without realizing RLS was a real condition! I just thought I had insane energy, but sometimes my brain can feel exhausted and sleepy but the rest of my body is still screaming to move so that always confused me

I sometimes get an extremely uncomfortable urge to stretch my right leg when im lying down at night, and I've always wondered what it is. It only ever happens at night when im lying in bed too, which is why I think it may be mild RLS. I'm fairly sure I have an iron deficiency and I do also drink coffee late at night too. It's really a hard sensation to describe. It's not painful or anything, infact I'd describe it more as a sensation of over-excitement that a child, or a dog may feel when you see them freak out uncontrollably. It feels more like an adrenaline rush that I get specifically behind my right kneecap. It's an uncontrollable feeling to stretch and tense my leg. It doesn't usually stop me from falling asleep, and it's always gone by the morning.

When I was about 3 years old, I was sleeping with my mom in her bed one night. I remember her shaking her feet and leg back and forth. I asked her why she kept moving or something like that. She explained to me that shaking 1 or both feet back and forth helped her to fall asleep. I then started copying her at the age of 3 that very night. I'm 33 now. I don't like to sway my feet at night to help sleep because it keeps me awake. I have epilepsy and one of my major triggers (if not the only one really) is lack of sleep. I have very bad insomnia. Sometimes at night I get an urge to move my legs. I cannot fall asleep on my back because I'm afraid of having a seizure in my sleep and choking. So I pretty much have to sleep on my side. I end up turning back and forth every 10-60 minutes or so, trying to get comfortable. After a while my leg and hip areas begin to hurt. It's causing me to stay in bed for up to 12 hours with only getting about 4 hours of sleep that is so broken up that I believe it is causing mental health issues. This all started because I was mimicking something my mom did, and I'm wondering if we teach ourselves these things some way or another and then it becomes a physical problem; mind/matter=reality kind of thing. Nothing seems to help me either. I have tried SO many herbal remedies, I have tried drugs, I have tried alcohol, I have tried hot baths, I have tried all kinds of things and it doesn't seem to help. Even if I do fall asleep, 4 hours later I wake up before the sun comes up and toss and turn another few hours or so. It's really driving me insane and I do not have money, a job, or disability status. I don't know what to do anymore.

      You got this!!! 😊

I have a different theory about rls.
I have experienced it after heavy leg workout due to muscle tightness. During pregnancy as the weight shifts legs get tight as well to keep the body / pelvis balanced. Tight leg & glute muscles = rls. My solution to this is deep whole leg massage, including claves and front of lower legs, quads, harmstrings, glutes and above glutes.
It makes sense that stress & anxiety can trigger it because when we are stressed or anxious we tighten up.
