Homeostatic regulation of blood calcium concentration

  • It is described how the mechanism of homeostatic regulation of the concentration of calcium in the blood or calcemia works. The physiological principle of equilibrium is used to explain what the amount of extracellular calcium depends on. Physiological processes that increase calcium (intestinal absorption and bone reabsorption) and those that decrease it (renal excretion and bone deposition) are described. In addition, it describes how the body detects the level of calcium in the blood (calcium-sensitive chemoreceptors) and how it responds to increases and decreases in calcium through the endocrine system. That is, through endocrine cells that produce parathormone (PTH) and calcitonin. The effect of PTH (and vitamin D) and calcitonin on calcium is described.
