I’ve been bucketed by capital one and I 100% agree with you. I have 2 quick silver cards with them. One card with a 1200 CL one with a 1300 CL with prefect payment history for 7 years and they will only gave me 100 CL increase. My credit score is in the low 700s so I applied for the chase sapphire preferred got approved with a 8700 CL and new card holder bonus…. So yeah I definitely agree with you.

I had a capital one platinum credit card for 16 years, with a 2k limit. I requested a limit increase and was only given a $200 increase. I have an income of over 130k,credit score of over 810,only one late payment in the 16 years w them and numerous other credit cards w limits of over 25k. I waited another year and requested another increase and was denied. I was pissed. I canceled my Capital one platinum card! Two weeks later, I applied for the Venture X card and was immediately approved and given a 30k limit! The bucket is real. I don’t understand their method to this madness🤔, but that’s my story.

Thanks for the explanation and your insight! I got my capital one card six years ago, i’ve only had one credit limit increase from $300-$500 after the first six months. After that, I’ve been repeatedly denied for an increase even though I’ve been able to get cards from other major institutions like citi, Amex, WF, etc. with limits in excess of $15k-$20k. I have even responded to their surveys stating that I wouldn’t recommend their product simply because they don’t meet my needs. Every month I get something in the mail saying “because we value you as a customer, we’d like to offer you an auto loan“. No thank you. I’m not interested in borrowing 1500 bucks. I need much more with today’s car prices.

I’m rebuilding my credit after many years of not using credit and fairly new to Capital One and you are absolutely right. I have at least been able to upgrade my card but the “puny” limit is less desirable. We’ll see what happens as I get closer to the year mark. Trust, I’m already 👀 at other cards with much higher limits. You’ve helped me feel better now about looking at other options - it’s like a bad relationship, you don’t have to continue to tolerate being mistreated- move on and you’ll clear the path for someone that recognizes and appreciates your value.

I was in the bucket. I had a secured card with a $600 limit. After several years of great payment history they finally upgraded my card to an unsecured Platinum. I applied for a credit limit increase twice and was denied both times so I closed the card and got a Quicksilver which they gave me a $3,000 limit on. It was my oldest card so closing it definitely hurt me a bit with the age of credit, but the massive credit limit increase helped balance out the dip a little bit.

Update: 12/25/21, the secured card is officially closed and reports in good standing, Paid as Agreed, Loan closed. I fully expect my credit scores to increase now. Spot on. Funny thing is, Capitol One will spam you on ways to use their cards at Walgreens, Macy's, and Apple. What are you supposed to do with $300. As PSA don't bother with the Walmart credit cards, is the same nonsense. I don't see their relationship lasting. I was placed not in the bucket, but in the bathtub, so I moved on to Amex and Synchrony. As someone suggested, once in awhile I just purchase gas or a pack of gum. It's a great starter, nothing more

this is a major flaw with Capital One. they are forcing people to leave them and take their business elsewhere over this instead of retaining loyal customers and rewarding them with card upgrades. there should be either a 1) graduation process where at the point they feel comfortable with you to upgrade your credit profile and card or 2) not offer bucket cards to people who can otherwise be approved for better cards. in hindsight, my mistake was in choosing the platinum card when other cards were available. i sincerely doubt that the rest of the cards were also bucket cards. at the time of application this was not made aware to me. i get a big F for not doing my research but CapOne you get a big F in business class and not being able to keep customers.
ty for the vid, this is an issue i'm currently concerned about.

I should’ve kept it going for a year but I ended up getting another card. My Navy Fed Visa has a huge CL plus I get 1.75% cash back. My Apple Card is $2k and I get cash back. I'm never late, never max out my card, and always pay in full monthly. They denied me for the venture card recently. Last month ( july) got an American Express gold card, right before I applied for the venture. When they denied me, I waited 30 days and got an American express green card to complete my Amex trifecta eco system. I also already had discover, bank of America, two citi cards and chase saffire, etc. All of these credit cards have given me way higher ( 4k, 7k, 15k credit line. Oh, but not capital one. If it didn't hurt my credit score currently 776, I'd close my account with them and kick them to the curb. I'm still thinking about it anyway.

Capital One is very stingy when it comes to giving credit limit increases. I had a card for several years with an initial $10,000 limit and a credit score in the 800s, and I was denied a credit increase twice. The third time they (reluctantly) gave me a $1000 increase. Citibank, on the other hand, is very generous in giving out credit increases. If you're a good paying customer, they will give you an increase if you ask and it has been at least 6 months since your last increase. They won't even do a hard pull on your credit.

Funny was being bucketed and didn’t even realize it. Or realize that was the term. My oldest card it a Capital one Platinum. It’s like 3 years old. I have others cards with way higher limits. Yet this Capital One card has a 500.00 limit. They offered me a limit increase before I think and I blew it off I think or something else happened. Can’t remember. But recently they offered me to convert it to a quicksilver card. So I went along and did it. Everything on the card stayed the same except for the benefits. But same credit line. I also have a Capital One savor card. 1,000. Limit. Asked for a credit limit once. They gave me a 100.00 that’s why I just basically didn’t use these Capital one cards. Now Capital One is offering me a limit increase on the Quicksilver card. I’m not going to take it because I’m sure it will be a low increase. And a waste of my time. I’m almost at 750 and haven’t got time for Capital ones games. It can just sit there.

I didn’t even know that this was a thing until this video! Wow. And I’m 29 with a 730+ credit score lol should have known better. For years I’ve been wondering why capital one has only given me one credit line increase and never made my quicksilver one available for a product change in 5 years. I really wish I didn’t choose them as a first card. It doesn’t bother me much but I could have access to more credit if I went elsewhere to start.

great video, bucketed here. Cap 1 customer for 20 years and have only gotten a $1k credit line increase with great credit. I'm only keeping the oldest card around to avoid losing my oldest account. I have the Amex platinum, Chase Reserve, and a few other decent cards, but cannot get a credit line increase from Cap 1 and to top it off, there's a membership fee of $5 per month. I really should get rid of it

I have a 1 year old CSP with a 20K limit and thought how the heck did they give me that until I also got an AMEX Gold and a Chase INK with 60k the same year. I then realized it was Cap One all along and not me.

was rebuilding my credit, had a secured card In (not upgradable) then got the platinum 500$ cl, 7 months later increased to 1K and upgraded to quicksilver. 2 months after that I got the US Bank Connect b/c Cap1 would not upgrade me past quicksilver and I know they elsewhere any time soon if at all. In hindsight, I should have gone the chase route due to 5/24 in place of the Connect, but you live and you learn. I did also acquire my first business CC through Cap1 when I got my connect card. So, it does suck to be in a bucketed system but Cap1 has served its purpose for me, it has allowed me to establish personal and business credit with a larger bank that has decent options. Using Cap1 as a stepping stone to then get to bigger and better banks. If I had not messed up my credit many years ago it would not have been an issue. But that's life, I am thankful for what Cap1 has helped me do, kinda sad they don't have good enough options for me to stay since other banks offer much better ecosystems and rewards (though the Savor is nice for sporting events and the new venture is interesting, let's see how that portal pricing does long term).

I'm glad they didn't raise my credit limit amount too soon. Now I have a 750 score and I have higher credit limit amounts. But it took a lot of budgeting and hard work on my part and having the lower limit was kind of an incentive for me, to help me drive up my score, and so I could be loaned more. It took me about a year and a half, and they all raised my limits automatically except one, the first one I got, BOA card. But the cash back perks on Capital one helped me pay of the balance on it and I find it to be a good card for extras and gas (that kind of thing). But I see your point, sometimes you just don't have the cash to cover a larger expense (these times are tough)

I have credit cards with Citi, Chase, Wells Fargo, FNBO, BOFA, Citizen, TD Bank, Barclays & Discover. All with high credit lines. Capital One is in my opinion the worst at giving CLA regardless of your payment history with them. Also they are one of the only bank I know that does a hard pull from all three credit bureaus when applying for a new credit card. The only reason I keep my two credit cards with them is due to the length of time I had them. But they are just sock drawer cards. I honestly tell everyone applying for new cards to go to other banks since Capital One is not worth it based on the hard pulls alone from all three bureaus. Maybe they really do not want to be in the consumer credit card business. It really looks that way.

My opinion if you’re in the “bucket”: Cut your losses and move on. Apply for other cards, establish a solid payment history, then give Cap One the boot. I’ve had several Cap One accounts over the years with a positive history, but I’m currently sitting on an account that I’ve had for over two years, with no missed payments and no over limit occurrences. Now, I am four years out of a BK, and I’ve maxed the card out several times (paid the balance in full), but I’m stuck at an $1,800 credit limit. They’ve also made less than $200 in interest in the two-plus years that I’ve had the card. I’m currently pre-approved for a Savor One card with no interest for 9 months, but a 28.99 APR thereafter, but I’m not interested. I currently have a total of 5 cards, but I’m going to narrow that down to three. One card to use for each pay period, and the third (which the longest that I have since filing BK) for monthly subscriptions and reoccurring charges only. See ya, Capital One!
