Medtner really didn’t understand what ‘for the young’ meant, did he? Even these pieces have some remarkably challenging material.

My guess is that he intended them as a suite to entertain young people rather than for beginners to play. But who knows?

It's definitely not meant to be played by the young. The musical content is vital, fresh, energetic. Like his Op. 39-4 ("Morning Song") and Sonata Tragica, which together picture his youth and then his old age. He was often concerned with the ravages of time in a human life and how he could translate them into music.

Great opus by Medtner! Medtner is really one of the best comosers ever (how Rachmaninoff said) and his sketches for young are so magical!

Listening to this again, gotta say the final two pieces "Hymn" and "Beggar's Tale" are absolute masterpieces. So many hidden gems in Medtner's body of work

I'm addicted to that first Prelude, so beautiful! Every time I think I've heard every piece by Medtner and there's nothing left for me to become obsessed with I'm proven wrong. Such an amazing composer, like others it took me a few tries to get into his music but now I put him alongside Beethoven and Schumann as my favorites

You're welcome! I understand completely that feeling over a composer and his music. It's hard to explain with words, but it's mesmerizing.
