I’m surprised you did’t talk about the Mood whiplash in this game. Freedom Planet is often criticized for how people found it’s tone all over the place. Such as how Brevon tortures Lilac after Thermal Base is so drastically darker then a game where they joke about Torque having cooties. I’m curious why you didn’t mention this.
The overall idea is that all of the game's dark moments involve Lord Brevon in some way. Brevon is meant to be one of those villains where you known things are about to go down when they appear on screen.
It's possibly because in later versions of the game (at least based on my experience when playing through the game myself), they actually trimmed out certain parts of different cutscenes but *only* for Lilac and Carol's cutscenes. In Lilac and Carol's story, nobody mentions anything about cooties, but in Milla's version of the same cutscene, they do. I'm guessing this was done to make the story flow more cohesively and remove the tonal issues that they were criticized for.
I wouldn’t mind Lord Brevon returning for a Freedom Planet 3. Maybe as a Sacrificial Lamb to show how the new big bad is a threat. Also imagine if he had to face off against Archie! Robotnik.
I know nobody actually cares, but I've met the voice-actor for Milla twice, had her sign a picture of the character, and have worked with her on a singular occasion. Yes, I know I also sound like a lying twelvie, but who cares, I just had to get that out of my system! And lemme just say, Aimee is a great actor who delivers what you want/need.
seeing this video reminds me of how rough this game was and also makes me feel more impressed at how much the team learned and grew in order to make freedom planet 2 as amazing as it is. it's comparable to something like the huge leap between the first street fighter and street fighter 2.
Nah Freedom Planet 1 isn't nearly as bad as Street Fighter 1. SF1 was actually unplayably bad and clunky. FP1 in comparison is poorly balanced and super frustrating on higher difficulties, but nowhere near unplayable.
@@jonathanhowells7864 when i was playng i thinked what boosted shield is much powerfull(just look at. Sprites) And what was my surprise that in the boss with the lizard all this time, the small shield could do everything that the enhanced version could do
I know your comment is a year old, but Milla was argueably the best character in FP1 if you knew how to play as her. Her Super Shield Burst let her gain insane speed and high and you can perform it multiple times in air straight up skip certain sections of stages. She also completely breaks Serpentine and Brevons 2nd Phase with her Shield. All FP2 did was give her more health and make her more accessible.
It's kind of like Sonic, but with a girl water dragon, a kind of girl bunny and whatever Carol is, taking place on a kind of 'freedom' planet with modern versions of three Asian kingdoms with talking animals in it.
This game truly was an underrated and one of those other Sonic Clones that acts like a worthy successors Instead of ending up like Busby and Awesome Possum. Quick Shoutout Honorable Mention for Sparks The Jester himself who was also the 2nd after this game!!
In sin 61, Charriii points out Lilac's hair missing but not Carol's tail, despite the fact it would probably be more noticeable because the tail is animated, and he even picks on it in earlier sin.
Has there ever been a character that has told sonic off about being reckless??? And told him he was just like them in their youth???. Hence their friends getting killed by eggman???
Well, if you love the animation of the game so much but wish the characters didn't snap between poses *and* have good sound engineering You're gonna enjoy Freedom Planet 2
YES! This game has been a favorite platformer for quite some time. I am SO glad you chose to cover this game. And noted, I'll check out C.A.R.L. too. Edit: I think I know why you died on the Kujacker fight as Carol, because I've had my fair share of deaths in this game, specifically trying to speedrun it. One of the ways I've died is by clipping through the floor during the fight. I don't remember which character this happened as, but I think it was Milla. That said, I feel like that means Mayor Zao's ship physically moves at some points in the fight, and THAT might be why you died, it displaced you JUST enough to kill you either by the laser or by crushing you in the ground.
2:56 The difference is that carol can actually take down the main villain on her own, unlike tails 5:02 reminder that she is a child and just saved carol, but the scene overall is f*cking weird lmao 14:46 Bro, you can just Dragon boost to his head 21:10 her special ability makes you inmune to spikes and lets you jump 22:58 You do realize her special makes you invulnerable while letting you jump?
13:24 This boss is actually really easy if you know that character specials (Such as Lilac's Dragon Boost) renders you invincible as long as it's active. In this case, just stay underneath the craft between its legs, hitting it and moving along it as it jumps back, making sure to jump when it lands to avoid damage. Then, when it charges into the background, jump and Dragon Boost level with the weak point for free damage. Rinse and repeat. 14:13 You apparently don't realize that Dragon Boost can be used to gain height and damage Dail on the way up and then kick him on the way down. In fact, there's an achievement involved where you deal damage to him before he's finished his monologue. Makes the fight way more fun, fair, and take a lot less time than you seem to imply. 20:57 Save the Metal Shield from just before this fight. The Metal Shield will allow you to stand on the spikes without getting harmed, allowing you to hit the boss's weak point from behind so you don't risk being attacked in return. Otherwise, it's important to know that Carol's Wild Kick renders her invincible, allowing you to literally kick lava and not get hurt.
This may help on repeat play throughs and when you make it to two. On the bosses a lot of your issues would be solved with the Dragon Boost. You're completely invulnerable while boosting and it does damage, this is useful on the big peacock because if you aim it right you can strike multiple tails easily, her dragon boost invincibility is a great tool also I think the cyclone helps in that fight imo. Edit: not sure if you ever did her uppercut or down kick in the air. For some reason in this game only lilac has direction based inputs for attacks, in 2 more of them do. Also Milla can reflect projectiles... that can help a lot.

Gonna be giving C.A.R.L a try later this week X3 I remember the spot it got during the DDLC video and can't wait to try it out. Great video as always Charriii, keep up the phenomenal work!
Plus, during that time Dawn M. Bennett and Sean Chiplock have gotten more popular with characters such as THE LEGENDARY TAE YAMADA!!!! and Shiki Granbell
My favorite character to use in this game is definitely Lilac. She's just the most Sonic like (duh) and she's also my favorite character in general. My favorite level would probably have to be Jade Creek as it is so fun both to look at and play through. I'm very excited for you to play the second one as pretty much every character is now even more fun to play, plus there's a brand new character to play as well
I’ve never heard of this fan game before but wow is it beautiful! I love the visuals and some of the animations of the attacks. The designs of the characters are also really cute and lovely! As for the questions.. I can’t really say since I haven’t played this game before since I never knew about it, but from what I’ve seen here I have to say I also really love Lilac. The stage I think I really like was around at 4:33 “Ice cap Zone”
This game genuinely confused me, like the entire internet had succesfully gaslit itself into thinking Sonic is something is not. Enemies don't die in one hit unless using a few specific moves and they don't even have those few specific moves on all chars. So you avoid them or crash the momentum. You never do this in 2D Sonic, because that's not how Sonic plays, that's how freedom planet plays. None of the characters play like Sonic. Lilac is Rocket Knight, Carol is MMZ Zero if all his attacks did 1 damage and the dog is just weird. The health system is not like Sonic's. The boss fights are not like Sonic's. The literally only way it resembles Sonic at all are the maps, but people still call it "A sonic game"
That's because it *started out* as a Sonic Fangame before they reworked it into an original IP. It's Sonic-Inspired, not an actual Sonic Game. Not to mention, they were actively trying to get from the Sonic Influences as time went on, something that is more visible in the Sequel.
That begining bit, no amount of likes would make up for how hard it must be to pull off, congrats on the entire video but just that begining bit really sold me
I wonder if he might do the sequel, the devs got their act together making it for sure, but its still the kinda game i think Charriii could do a fun video on
I think the one scene that really turned me off of this game was the very, very gratuitous scene with Lilac and Brevon. The entire game as a whole wasn’t… bad, but that scene just had me feeling really yucky. It’s a hard line to ride in storytelling, and felt almost fetishistic and out of tone with the rest of the game.
Now everyone will ask for FP2 and Spark The Electric Jester Trilogy. Please do them, and also Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling, a game that's inspired by Paper Mario 64 and TTYD
The Dragon Rush that Lilac has makes you invincble fyi. Sorry, I just noticed that you weren't using that move against The Absolution. Also, I enjoyed this video.
Oh, that would be the shit! If The Thousand-Year Door was an improvement over Paper Mario 64, then Bug Fables was an improvement over The Thousand-Year Door. Maybe he could even do an "Everything Wrong With" for Chrono Trigger, but Charriii5 only does these kinds of videos on games that have multiple flaws or nitpicks for writing or mechanics in general. And because it's Chrono Trigger, that won't happen.
So it’s like Sonic mixed with a little Shantae sprinkled in with voice acting and how the characters move and express in scenes. Plus the emphasis on fighting than momentum-based platforming. I guess it terms of setting it’s like Shantae. Kinda high tech, kinda old looking aesthetics. Like Risky Boots having a normal looking pirate ship but it’s got some tech in there. Or these eastern style ships with rockets propelling them. (Ignore that Bowser’s airships also are. Rocket powered wooden ships.)
I completely agree with Lilac and Fortune Night being my favorites of the game. How they do the little dance in the second part of the stage is cute. And the second boss was super fun for me. I've always loved the "High- speed Chase character is constantly running while enemy shoots you with random shiet" bosses in games like this and the other characters coming to help and the music added to the intensity. I replay this stage just to fight that boss for as long as possible.
Hey, fun fact, Lilac's double jump attacks. Feel like that's important to note considering you bitchin 'bout so many bosses being hard to hit and you aren't even using it when it's the easiest move to use against him.
So...is it in the second game that Lilac gets tortured? Because Charrii5 didn't bring it up here, so it must be in the second game. And despite never playing this game in my life, that is literally the only part about it I know about because I saw a Sonic Forces meme on Google saying that what happens to Lilac is how you torture a character in an E10 rated game, as apposed to Sonic Forces which only mentioned that Sonic was tortured for six months, yet he's perfectly fine the next time we see him.
No, it's in the first Game. It's part of that Cutscene where Brevon ask her "Why do you fight?". I forgot how the Conversation went exactly, but eventually he just electrocutes the hell out of her. Also, just to note, that "Sonic got tortured for six Months and doesn't show it" is mainly because that was completely made up for the west. That Line is only in the international Versions, the JP Script never says that at all.
THAT INTRO…..YOU ARE A TRUE FRIEND TO YOUR FRIEND. Cool and inspirational! I have been learning game design for a few years now. And I love 2D the best. Original chiptune music too? I’ll see to this C.A.R.L. product sometime. Thanks for doing this vid! It’s suits your style.
Oh good , I don't have to waste my time on another series that makes me suffer. But that begs the question , "How far would anyone go for a long gone memory?" Now I know why the music in Mega Collection's history was so sad , memories don't last.
Awesome and funny video. Thanks for bringing attention to an underrated game. My favorite character to play is Carol because of her bike. Jake Creek is my favorite level
Yo, Freedom Planet 2 picks up everything. Like it is definitely one of the best video games I have ever played. The writers really picked up the issues in the first games script. The level design sticks with me far more too.
I will admit this game does have some flaws that make it akward to play and watch, but I do really enjoy it and I feel like it has a lot of charm to it.
I know the shortout is for C.A.R.L, but I'm more focused on the Zardy's Maze shirt. I didn't know they had merch outside the Makeship stuff. Anyway, C.A.R.L does sound cool, I might play it at some point.
14:27 you CAN do Dragon Boost after Cyclone After you hit Air Cyclone, quickly cancel it with Normal Attack so your meter starts refilling, then just do Dragon Boost and you are done also, if you really want to hit him why not just Dragon Boost Up and do it?
21:03 you have a Wild Kick, move that you can hold and makes you INVULNERABLE when used. Just hold the Panic Button when in trouble. it's not even that, jump timing when lava is off screen is always the same and if you hold the jump fully it's a really big window to jump over.
Wait, if you made an EWW for Freedom Planet, and you have plans to check out the sequel as well, does that mean you'll also check out another Sonic-inspired game like Spark the Electric Jester?
Looking forward for EWW Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. While being a high quality April's Fool special. Unforgivable sin can still be found and must be brought to light.
7:09 the quickest way to take down dail one is actually the drop kick. The spin has a surprising amount of damage frames so you can literally just get on a platform spam drop kick and individually pick off the feathers. You can't dodge phase 2's aoe attack with this but at that point you have the lotus on the ship to back you up 14:12 again. Another to speed the process is, the trio can still move in cutscene. Meaning if you're smart, Milla can set a laser off, Carol can climb up the wall to kick the shield off, and lilac can just straight up dragon boost and break his shield and deal a bunch of damage. There's even three challenges to get for this, they expect you to take advantage of this
3:07 AcTuAlLy if you play more, she's more like Knuckles. 5:04 I find this particular reaction, COMING FROM THE MAN WHO LOVES SONIC, SO **SHOULD** BE USED TO S*** hilarious.
"This stranger let me touch her hair. We are friends now." Funnily enough, that's basically the over-arching plot of an ongoing series of Sonic fanfics I'm writing. Heh.
This game is certainly a classic and while nowadays it feels it's being held together by ducktape I still hold a huge amount of love for it and it thrills me to see you covering it! Can't wait to see you tackle Freedom Planet 2, the sequel is such an upgrade from the first in practically every single way.
Didn't even really look at the title, before immediately tapping on the video ... Mainly because my first playthrough was with the cutscenes turned off (classic mode, or something). So I wanted to vaguely know the story of the game

I've been waiting for this one for a while.
I guess "Everything Wrong With Freedom Planet 2" coming relatively soon?
The secret to beating Spade with Milla was using the cube shield and charge beam
The Dragon Rush that Lilac has makes you invincble fyi. Sorry, I just noticed that you weren't using that move against The Absolution.
Also, I enjoyed this video.
Lilac is basically an easy mode because she is invulnerable during her dash so I don't have your struggles but each our own
You should do a “Everything Wrong With Bug Fables” video. It’s essentially the superior Paper Mario!
That would be the absolute tits, and i'm all for it.
He did freedom planet! That’s so cool!!
People called her a knock off Sonic the hedgehog game but it's story pretty good, especially the second one.
IM SO HAPPY YOU’RE DOING THIS
So...is it in the second game that Lilac gets tortured? Because Charrii5 didn't bring it up here, so it must be in the second game.
And despite never playing this game in my life, that is literally the only part about it I know about because I saw a Sonic Forces meme on Google saying that what happens to Lilac is how you torture a character in an E10 rated game, as apposed to Sonic Forces which only mentioned that Sonic was tortured for six months, yet he's perfectly fine the next time we see him.
It's in 1, he just didn't show it because It's F**ked.
@@agitpolat1061 So...another case of mistranslation again? Just like always 😒
@@Jacob_G9 I suppose RUclips wouldn't like it, can't afford to get demonetized 😅
I wonder what colour blood Lilac bleeds?
6:11
Any gameplay engine weirdness may be a result of Clickteam Fusion and Spaghetti Code. So yeah, it happens sometimes
From the way she looks and fights the main character Lilac makes me think Sonic and Shantae got together and had a kid.
Oh good , I don't have to waste my time on another series that makes me suffer.
But that begs the question , "How far would anyone go for a long gone memory?"
Now I know why the music in Mega Collection's history was so sad , memories don't last.
17:57 BIKER EX MACHINA
Ok can we all say that the music in the mall section in dragon city is🔥🎵🎶😎
on god
Awesome and funny video. Thanks for bringing attention to an underrated game. My favorite character to play is Carol because of her bike. Jake Creek is my favorite level
2:43 Unless Brevon already invaded planets with man like habitants
Yo, Freedom Planet 2 picks up everything. Like it is definitely one of the best video games I have ever played. The writers really picked up the issues in the first games script. The level design sticks with me far more too.
Meanwhile the sequel solving, the stamina situation, and giving more importance on why you should destroy the robots : 🗿
I will admit this game does have some flaws that make it akward to play and watch, but I do really enjoy it and I feel like it has a lot of charm to it.
9:33 "The reason I'm in here is because of that fake hedgehog."
I only know about this game because of A Hat in Time...
Also, I love these bits with you talking to yourself
Are you going to do Freedom Planet 2?
I know the shortout is for C.A.R.L, but I'm more focused on the Zardy's Maze shirt. I didn't know they had merch outside the Makeship stuff. Anyway, C.A.R.L does sound cool, I might play it at some point.
So, Freedom Planet 2, yeah?
I think most of your problems with bosses as Lilac were because you weren't using your Double Jump as attack
14:27 you CAN do Dragon Boost after Cyclone
After you hit Air Cyclone, quickly cancel it with Normal Attack so your meter starts refilling,
then just do Dragon Boost and you are done
also, if you really want to hit him why not just Dragon Boost Up and do it?
21:03
you have a Wild Kick, move that you can hold and makes you INVULNERABLE when used.
Just hold the Panic Button when in trouble.
it's not even that, jump timing when lava is off screen is always the same and if you hold the jump fully it's a really big window to jump over.
26:18 I wish they explained mechanics more this in game but.
you have a SHIELD, it blocks and maybe reflects ALL of spades attacks.
Wait, if you made an EWW for Freedom Planet, and you have plans to check out the sequel as well,
does that mean you'll also check out another Sonic-inspired game like Spark the Electric Jester?
I was waitin' for you to talk about this game!
Freedom Planet's one of my all time favs
Hm, fair and valid points and opinions, i will look forward to when you do 2.
Well I Hope We Get Freedom Planet 2 Next
The fact that u made a video about this games was really suprising, and for that I thank you, now hurry up and make Freedom Planet 2
We getting one for FP2? The combat balancing at least may cut a good fraction of sins vs FP1 addressing shortcomings from combat to movement options.
25:04 even the flutter sound effect is the same as yoshi’s (nsmbwii)
I liked this game.
Looking forward for EWW Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. While being a high quality April's Fool special. Unforgivable sin can still be found and must be brought to light.
Yo! I love Freedom Planet! Thanks for covering it!
21:45 "Scene does not contain furry lap dance"
Freedom Planet had it's notable flaws, but its sure as hell gonna be difficult to sin the sequel
6:27 - yeah, that's what I thought when I first saw her.
7:09 the quickest way to take down dail one is actually the drop kick.
The spin has a surprising amount of damage frames so you can literally just get on a platform spam drop kick and individually pick off the feathers.
You can't dodge phase 2's aoe attack with this but at that point you have the lotus on the ship to back you up
14:12 again.
So, Charriii, are you doing the same thing as Th3Birdman and TonySonic where you have multiple versions of yourself?
"This stranger let me touch her hair. We are friends now."
Funnily enough, that's basically the over-arching plot of an ongoing series of Sonic fanfics I'm writing. Heh.
Cool video bro!
This game is certainly a classic and while nowadays it feels it's being held together by ducktape I still hold a huge amount of love for it and it thrills me to see you covering it!
Can't wait to see you tackle Freedom Planet 2, the sequel is such an upgrade from the first in practically every single way.
Except the artstyle. Everything BUT that is an improvement.
@@headphonesaxolotl Nah, the art style change was an objective improvement, it made it look more like its own thing.
Didn't even really look at the title, before immediately tapping on the video
... Mainly because my first playthrough was with the cutscenes turned off (classic mode, or something). So I wanted to vaguely know the story of the game
Imagine next we get everything wrong with like sparks or trees
Another great video dude, keep up the awesome work.
This is pretty cool!
