Nic Ehlers is a freaking badass, he just jumped up so high on my list of favorite players. That level of respect and awareness in a moment like that speaks volumes of his character.

Not a Jets fan, but as of tonight, I'm a Ehlers fan. While his teammates and the Habs were all looking for dance partners, he had the presence of mind to protect Evans. How much worse could that situation had been if a player had fallen on Evans? Respect.

A lot of flashbacks to Dale Hunter on Pierre Turgeon. Scheifele had less time to react, but he also knew darn well what he was doing. Should be out rest of series at minimum.
Joel Edmundson when asked about the Scheifele hit: “If he gets back in the series, we're going to make his life miserable. But I think the league's going to do a good job with that." What a response. I’ve seen some think his implication was that they’ll retaliate, but it seemed to me like he meant they’ll frustrate and stifle Scheifele just as much as they did tonight. Great defence. I like Scheifele (less now...I'm a Habs fan, but I think even most Jets fans are shaking their heads at this hit...I know if Perry did something similar, I'd be furious), but man, that's textbook intent to injure...not just because he made the choice to go for the hit, but because when he saw the shot Evans took, instead of choosing to go for the puck, he decided to commit to the hit...which was technically AFTER the play (which ended with the goal). So he had two opportunities to make a better choice, and didn't. In the regular season, this would be 5+ games. In the playoffs...well, I guess we'll see. 2 at least, although the fact that it wasn't a spur of the moment thing, that he actually went in and made the dangerous play not in service of preventing a goal, but because he was frustrated at not having a great game, could make it 3 or 4. I'd be shocked if it's more than that. The one thing that might shorten any suspension is that as far as I can tell, this is Scheifele's first dirty hit. If this was a Wilson hit, he'd get 8 games.

Major props to Ehlers for holding everyone back to make sure Evans didn't get hurt worse when there was the scrum after the hit and call for help even to his team's doctor. I may have lost some respect for his teammate and his team by association, I have become a fan of Ehlers. My thoughts and prayers are with Jake Evans and hope he is okay. I hope Montreal can make the Semifinals now in his honor.

Evans was at the hotel that night, so luckily it looks like he's okay from an orthopedic perspective.
I love hockey, but plays like that make me want to throw in the towel. If this wasn't a hockey game, that hit would be considered a felony and would put Scheifele in prison!
He doesn't deserve to come back for the remainder of the playoffs! That was beyond the scope of the game, and needs to be dealt with accordingly! So sad.
Might sound extreme but any player that does something like that shouldn't be allowed to play hockey ever again. The next time they do it they may very well break someones neck. The game was literally over with no chance for them to win. It's one thing to hit a guy when it has a bearing on the play, and on the game. This was just a classless and trashy hit on a defenseless player. Unacceptable. It's time for NHL player safety to set a new precedent. This kind of indefensible behavior must be eradicated. I'm getting really tired of seeing life-threatening injuries. Hockey is not fun to watch when players are being knocked unconscious for literally no reason.

Hope Evans is all right. That head impact on the ice was scary to watch, even more so when he wasn't moving for a long time afterwards.
Of course the health of Evans is most important but I was really looking forward to watching him play this series...I like the way he plays...

Hitting in hockey, contrary to popular belief, is not a crime. It's called a penalty. You assume a lot of risk playing this game. Charging? Yes. Fine, certainly..Game or two? Sure. Crime? No.

Scheifele lost is mind during the game ,before the Evans incident ,he tried to hurt Chiarot while he was down on the ice . He clearly went for Evans head , Scheifele should get 10 games suspension for that dumb and dangerous hit ,but it's the NHL so it's gonna be 1 or 2 game max.

If Hellebuyck doesn't up his game starting game two, the Jets are going to be a lot easier to out than the Leafs.

As a neutral, i know its early but Winnipeg is already done. Could even see Montreal returning the favour with a sweep, or close it out in 5. The team morale in the Habs locker room after the Toronto series and the Evans hit will fire them to a resolute series victory.
If the NHL brings Scheifele back to this series, they'll be exposing refs, players and fans to more unnecessary violence.

It amuses me when people speak of “tradition” and “old days” when speaking about sports. When I hear this on the internet or in person, I feel sorry for how irrelevant their attitude is towards this topic. Like my grandpa talking about how he had to walk miles to school. That’s why we have cars so we don’t have to walk miles to school. This play was totally unnecessary and worthy of a suspension. The only question is for how long and is the league going to do anything to avoid these types of dangerous plays.

Ehlers is a real man ! Don't think I can't describe what Schiefele was during this game and not get edited . I wouldn't wish this on Todd Bertuzzi , Tom Wilson or Donald Trump . Kudos to Montreal (even though I am cheering for Jets ) they were the better team tonight !
That hit was sickening. The play was over, the hit served no purpose. That is not finishing your check at all, that's looking to wipe someone out after the play who's in a vulnerable spot.

Scheifele's hit happens after the goal is scored so point of contact is irrelevant. It reminds me of Hunters hit on sneaky Pete. Except Turgeon wasnt injured but Hunter still got 21 games. No way schiefele gets that much probably should.
I root for ex Shark players, not teams, so I’m rooting for Dylan DeMelo in this series, but I’m REALLY loving the HABS story.

@@tysongratton1882 When your feet leave the ice on a hit, it is not to to hit a chest, especially when the recipient is extending his reach. Evans did not have a chance. It was a serious attempt to injure. The only thing scheifeles wanted to do, was to hit someone hard before the end of the game.

To me the biggest indicator that the hit was predatory is Scheifele never made ANY effort to play the puck. From the replay, you can tell he easily could have got a stick on it, and possibly saved his team from going down 5-3. He lets his team down here by committing to the hit instead of even trying to stop the goal.
Instead he allowed Evans to score, purely with the intention of making a charge where he had many seconds to see Evans would be extremely vulnerable. Really brutal hit from a guy who was out for blood. I was gutted
It's not the first time he's done this, but this is the first time where someone got horribly injured from his actions. He did the same thing in a regular season game, but the player who was the target got out of the way on time and Scheifele hit himself on the boards.

Great hit, no charging, 55 was gliding into the guy who had his head down admiring his own shot. First rule of hockey. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP. 55 was actually throwing snow as he came into Evans.

Ehlers on the other hand showed class and caring for his opponent and think he should be recognized for what he did to protect Evans. I'm just praying he's OK and continues to score against the Jets. Scheifele needs to be held accountable and why hasn't he issued a public apology for his stupidity?
The thing is, you’ve got to have your head up when handling the puck in that kind of a flash point scenario, and if it means not scoring then so be it. A glance a second in advance would have alerted him of the potential threat, doesn’t take much, and if it means going back behind the net to try something else then Plan B must be enacted, or the other choice if he was desperate to score would have been to stay really low and maybe pull off a last second flop to the ice. Easy to say as an armchair quarterback, but still, that was just to tight to come out and splice, should have retreated arrears and tried some other kind of guise.
Nope, can't blame the victim on a charge. I went through that yesterday. That was a charge by NHL standards and the rule says nothing about keeping your head up.

Disgusting hit, Scheifele needs to be out for the series for his own good and for justice for Jake. Bad look for NHL and if they botch the suspension, it will be unforgivable.

I thought the Jets led in shot only because they kept shooting from the outside and from the neutral zone on Price. Montreal dominated this one and had way more scoring chances. Id also like to say that I respected Scheifele before this game. Not the case anymore.
Scheifele shouldn’t touch the ice for the rest of the series even if it makes it to 7 games. Clear intent to injure, made no effort to play the puck, hit to the head, charging and he jumped. It’s sad how i could keep going. I really hope Evans is okay, he’s become a huge part of the Habs.

@@jonathangarmuth8975 He didn’t even try to poke the puck away, never even looked at it. His only goal was to hit Evans and hit him hard. He was losing all game during scrums, it was bound to happen. I get that he’s frustrated and that it’s playoff hockey, but there’s no place for a hit like that.

Evens was unconscious before he hit the ice. With his past history he will probably be out for the rest of the playoffs, I just hope it doesn’t end his career.

I hear Evans broke his neck. Now that can mean many things, so no need to speculate, but it was a sore Loser hit with full force to player tucking in empty netter with head down. I don’t want to see somebody killed on the ice, but it will happen soon due to speed and strength of todays players. Sickening to Watch. I want Scheiffle to face consequences that hurt him badly.
