    Do this exact same drill but holding the club in your regular set up. Then flip the club like he does but the toe will be pointing in the opposite direction of the target and take a swing at the ball. The feeling will be that you are going to strike the ball with the back heel of the club. Watch what happens. You will make the purest strike imaginable. This ax drill is the best drill for swinging on plane and getting the proper wrist hinge. Thanks so much for the video!

    Pete...I have been struggling ever since I started playing golf with how to square my club face at impact with any consistancy. This drill demonstrated clearly how to do that! I have tried this method on the range this morning hitting solid and much straighter shots. I found that dropping the club head (axe blade)
    with the cutting edge aimed at the ball, then squaring the club face only with
    forearm rotation works perfectly. Continuing to rotate the body while pulling with the lead shoulder is also a must for club speed. Thanks so much! (Molena, Georgia)

    Would have saved myself hundreds of hours spent scouring YT videos if I'd found this one first. But then I probably wouldn't have appreciated how important it is to an understanding of the golf swing. Because I failed to grasp the principle he's demonstrating here I've been swinging over the top for years. So fortunate to have stumbled on it. My advice to anyone struggling with the golf swing is do exactly what he demonstrates here. Don't get confused with the written instructions or what he says about the toe of the club. Just copy what he does. The penny should eventually drop.

    • @Pseudify

      I think you’re missing the point of the drill. It’s meant to show you what a proper downswing should feel like in your grip. To most golfers, a proper downswing will feel more open (in their hands) because most high handicappers use a lot of forearm rotation to square the face when you should be using body rotation and release to square the face.

    • @Pseudify
      @Pseudify 2 года назад

      Remember that he initially gripped the club with the toe down. So the club is simply returning to impact in the same position. That toe towards the target rotation before he starts the backswing is like preloading the natural rotation that happens in a real backswing. And if you simply bend the wrists and elbow as he describes you will be in a proper plane without having to think about rotating your forearms at the same time you are “lifting the axe”.

    Does anybody else have a problem with Pete's re-gripping the club at 1:16 with the club head changing in a different position? At 1:12-1:15 the toe is down. Then he re-grips and the toe is rotated 90 deg and points into the bucket and stays there to the top and down into the "slot" and then he rotates the forearms to impact where the toe is now down. I don't get the re-grip, something is missing in the explanation. It seemed that he rotated his forearms at the regroup. But, this demonstrates (but not explained) the "forearm spinning or rotation" that he (and disciples) talks about in other videos. The other thing I don't get is why not do the drill with toe up.... It seems that his words say one thing but he is demonstrating rotate forearms on the way back till club is horizontal, no more rotation till downswing and club is horizontal again - then rotate forearms (and hands). It seems that the value of this drill is that it visualized the face of the club travelling along the plane.

      Yes. Which mimics how your hands should feel during a real swing. Note that you would not make an actual swing like this. It’s just to give you the correct feel of the hands on the downswing of a real golf shot. In a real golf shot the club face should square automatically if you’re turning your body and have a relaxed grip. As I understand it…

    Wow, a lot of hate and people saying they are confused by this lesson in the comments. I think that is really caused by a misunderstanding of what he is saying. This is very good imagery but for the most part, to comprehend this concept, you have to have a decent understanding of the golf swing prior to viewing.

  • @ChristopherDowning
    @ChristopherDowning 2 года назад

    I think this drill works better the way I was taught and don't rotate your hands - so keep the toe pointing at the ball. Start as Pete does - toe down in normal stance - rotate in so it now points at the ball and your right elbow way underneath your left - right shoulder way down - then keep the toe pointing at the ball in the backswing and in the downswing - it's feel thing you're going for. Then get that feel into a normal set up / swing.

    • @Pseudify
      @Pseudify 2 года назад

      I wouldn’t recommend that for a couple reasons. With your right shoulder that low you are going to get in some bad positions that might even be bad on your back. Also keeping the toe pointing at the ball misses the point of ingraining what a proper release should feel like.

    • @ChristopherDowning
      @ChristopherDowning 2 года назад

      @@Pseudify Yes David I agree - it's not a template for swinging - it's a drill to show a slicer an extreme position to help them change. Shoulder down to 15" behind the ball. Right elbow lower and brushing below your ribs. The sense of being behind the ball instead of over and fwd of it in an over-the-top swing. This definitely does not teach release - that's impossible with this drill/exercise. (Anyway - this is how I was taught this exercise by an ex-Tour pro that had played 5 Opens in the past - so he must know a thing or two about striking the ball.)

  • @Dreama40
    @Dreama40 8 лет назад +8

    He starts the demo in the vertical position toe down, and finishes toe down(like an axe, up n down-fair enough)(ok still with ya Pete). Then says you want this action but in a different swing plane(Still with ya Pete). So he turns the bucket(log) on its side and begins the demo toe down(relative to the bucket)(Still with ya Pete), BUT then finishes "toe square"(Ya lost me now Pete)? Also the hand position at address(after he flips the club is nothing like his hand position at impact, ie he has a super strong grip when he flips but then returns to impact in a conventional grip impact position. My conclusion is this is a lot of confusing bullshit. Wanders off shaking head.

    • @stevepising
      @stevepising 7 лет назад +1

      I thought the same thing. What does flipping the club round at 1:13 achieve? He gets into a super strong grip at address then rotates his arms back to neutral at impact. No good player I know manipulates the club like that with their hands.

    • @boustin91
      @boustin91 6 лет назад +1

      I just think the first flip puts your hands in the right delivery position right before impact and should not be regarded as the initial setup position at address... It just conditions the wrists in a correct angle so that you can feel proper release.

    • @jacobr4558
      @jacobr4558 4 года назад +1

      Like most deep things this is hard to grasp. Go from the assumption that he knows something you don't. He is trying to impart that knowledge to you. Is he not saying it right or are you not hearing him? I would side with him on this. This concept is worth it's weight in gold to me.

    • @migbgold3191
      @migbgold3191 2 года назад

      Another way of doing this is to delay the flipping that he does at setup - because I agree it looks forced and awfully strong in the grip and rt arm almost too low underneath. But that “action” of getting the rt arm/elbow externally rotated under the lead arm actually does take place in a pro level golf swing - it is not something top players do at setup. But part of the purpose and effect of a quality transition as you get geared up in to the downswing is to have that rt arm/elbow get external and then through impact lots of quality ball strikers will get that lead wrist to swivel into flexion and rt wrist o extend back as it covers through impact. So … I have found that a nice little pre shot routine is to 1-2 of these but don’t exaggerate the flipping under at setup like he is showing here -- save that for when you get up closer to top of backswing and in that period feel that flipping of the clubface so instead of toes down on the way down - it’s “toe leads/in front” in transition …. And then in motion, get that wrist swivel working and toe back to the ground (back of the clubface) in and through impact ….. should be a very powerful and effortless feel

    • @Pseudify
      @Pseudify 2 года назад

      Remember that toe down is where he started with his setup. So striking the log in that position just means you’ve made a proper release. If you hit the log with the sharp part of the axe then you didn’t release and the ball goes way right. Think of that rotation he does that points the toe at the log as simply presetting your hand position as it should be at the top of the swing.

    Most conceptualize the golf swing as sweeping action with hands pulling club through the ball. That works, but isn’t as powerful or efficient as what he is teaching which is essentially to throw the hands down in the vicinity of the back knee in the downswing and keep them there and then let momentum and gravity whip the club head around the hands with a thumb-up to thumb-down ‘waggle’ action. The club can whip around the hands faster than the hips and shoulders can sweep it.
    The physics is similar to what happens in a car crash if the occupants are not wearing seat bents. In the downswing if the back foot is kept on the ground the hips can only swing open 45° which brings the shoulders back parallel to target line at address. That abruptly slows down the hands just as the club shaft reaches horizontal which then causes the club head mass to whip down and forward around the hands like the unbelted driver flying through the windshield of the car when it abruptly stops.
    In the golf swing style he is teaching the lifting and turning of the back foot to keep the hips and shoulders turning to the finish is coordinated with that whipping action of the club head around the slowed down hands. In practice the hips move laterally to the target and turn to 45° open with back foot still on the ground and if feels like the hips are hitting a wall just as the club head reaches the ball at which point the back heel is lifted to allow hips, shoulders and hands to keep moving to the finish as the club force pulls the trailing arm out straight at the target as occurs when tossing balls side arm.

      @rationalsanelogical8910 Год назад

      What you are describing you do work, yes. However, your swing will lack compression of the golf ball, which in turn, produces speed, power, and distance. The long the golf ball is in contact with the face of the club, the more compression of the golf ball that is allowed to take place producing not only more distance, but also allows for more user input on control & direction of the ball.

    • @TeddyCavachon
      @TeddyCavachon Год назад

      @@rationalsanelogical8910 Respectfully disagree. Compression is a function of F=1/2(Mass x Velocity^2) striking force. Releasing the club around the hands increases club head velocity more than just dragging it lagging through the ball with hip and shoulder turn.
