      In Em's defense, at the time there were A LOT of MC's that were good. Em can make the "I'm the greatest" claim now because all the "Lil'" punks of the last few years don't have the lyrical skill to compete with anyone competent at rapping, much less the GOAT Eminem.

    As an old Eminem fan I can say I DEFINITELY read The Source religiously (since '94). So did every other hip hop head. People really underestimate the incredible influence The Source (and magazines in general) had back then. It's one of the reasons why I respect Eminem so much - Benzino & co were fucking up this hip hop institute for personal gain and people slowly started to see this. At first people didn't even want to believe that was happening because no one could imagine anyone wanting to even try to put such a revered place in trouble, their reputation was pretty much flawless. They told you where to go, who to listen to and they were REAL about it. Everybody respected The Source enormously. It's why no one even dared to say a thing about what was happening in front of our eyes. So the amount of balls it took for Eminem to stand up to this...The Source could potentially destroy any rap career back in the day. Now I don't think they would've been able to with Eminem and also things were already falling apart (for many reasons) but it was still a boss move by Eminem if I've ever seen one. And the moment I personally realized that anyone who would ever beef with Eminem ever again would be a fucking fool, lol.

    Stevie Knight you're right for the most part comes to if Eminem fans were or were not following the Source magazine, are purchasing The Source magazine or are subscribed to. Now like you were referring to the Eminem fans that were the top 40 chart Eminem fans no those guys those people weren't for the most part purchasing The Source magazine. Now I'm a 38 year old Caucasian male never considered myself a Stan but I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for Eminem and what he's done for the culture and he is definitely in the goat conversation but it's hard to specify the goat because there's so many different forms of Hip Hop lyricism,storytelling,speed rap....ect but as far as me being from Flint Michigan which is right down the road from Detroit and being a hip-hop head I mean I am hip hop I am the culture i respect the Legends the DJ Kool herc the KRS 1 the Big Daddy Kane's the Tupac's the naz's excetera excetera, so yeah when I was 13 years old 14 years old I was getting The Source before Eminem even come out as too the discrepancies from the point once Benzino started taking control of the mic system instead of realizing if you don't mess with me I'm not going to give you a decent Mike review whether you were dope or not. Now I think the reason that Benzino whent at Eminem was because of that reason that what he's white he most likely has no Street Credibility so if I go at him I don't have to deal with any repercussions as to where if you was to say something about a black artist even if he didn't know a thing about him he knows well this dude probably has some sort of ties like a homeboy or a cousin or somebody who's on a street level and I ain't trying to get into that because Benzino the clown, a fake or phony and extorter of the culture that he claims to love and Be, and represent. That's all my hiphopheads out there y'all should know back in 1973 it popped off and that's when DJ Kool herc started it all but in 75 when Afrika Bambaataa started laying the groundwork and bylaws and rules to what hip hop was going to be as a culture Afrika Bambaataa said no matter what race Nation or Creed as long as you respect the culture you are allowed in hip hop so we need to stop with it black / White issue as a whole is a nation or as a culture and remember that hip-hop is not about black and white it's about wrong and right and it's about respecting the elders in the ones who paved the way to help others eat off that art and all these guys are claimed to be all about hip hop and providing amplification for the culture never pay homage to those who paved the way you never see any of them doing that Eminem's constantly give a shout outs to the legends so anyway Stevie night mad salute to you and what you do brother your channel is growing so much and it is so well deserved cuz you keep it a buck and admit that you used to discriminate against Eminem based on certain criteria in you know you open your eyes and realized hey just dudes actually dope so shoutout Steven Knight shout out tonight Nation y'all remember....LMF....... loyalty makes you family blood only makes you related

      The Source wasn't regional, if you were around in the early 90s til around 2005, the Source Magazine was like the Bible of Hip Hop. Literally everything they said was gold. Doesn't matter if you was from NY, LA, St. Louis or Texas

      Nope. LA here and we copped the Source everytime it dropped. We used to first go to the album ratings and see who got rated what and cop. We didn't wanna sleep on a 4+ mic rated album.

    • @emyf9197
      @emyf9197 3 года назад

      The thing started with mmlp got 4 mics on the source.. And at that time anyone could get that rating.. Then TES came out and he got huge positive ratings from everywhere even rock stations were playing him.. Then source gives again 4mics.. Now he took it as an insult.. Then he went on TV and said that he will never get a 5 rating from source bcuz they don't understand greatness and he didn't care abt whatever agenda they had against him. Em also went to Puerto Rico to promote and benzino wanted to meet him in person but em declined and somewhere after that he called benzino a "has been".. That pissed Ben out and he made that diss track against him " Pull up your skirt " N shit went on from there

    • @herrzimm
      @herrzimm 3 года назад +3

      At the time, The Source was the "go to" reference for literally ALL things related to Rap. NY to LA, people would go out of their way to get a current copy just to keep up to date on who was in the studio, who had the best selling LP or Single, who was on tour and with who they were touring with, as well as get more information on the "upcoming" artists. The Source was the 'street map of success' for a lot of rappers looking to get into the industry as well.
      Then Benzino got it into his head to team up with Ja Rule to go after 50, Em, D12, and almost ANYONE associated with Aftermath and Shady Records. To the point that Benzino was working behind the scenes to get Russel Simmons and Def Jam to basically boycott ANY collabs or future projects with anyone doing a single verse with anyone from Aftermath. That is Benzino trying to get Russell Simmons and Def Jam artists to NOT work with ANYONE connected in any way to Aftermath, including Dr. Dre, Snoop, Xzibit and others at the time. In today's world, that would be like 1 man at Disney trying to get WB and Sony to NEVER do another film with Chris Evans because he played Capt America in a couple of movies.

    Stevie, idk how old you are personally, but I was in High School when this beef took place. The Source was that magazine back in the day. Eminem isn't kidding when he says that the mic ratings was a make or break system for albums. If someone was a 3, they were suspect. Most people, who followed hip hop closely and wanted the best lyricists possible, they only got the 4's and 5's. But Benzino muddied the waters terribly. He started 1 and 2 mic'ing Eminem and anyone associated with him. They also did "quotables" and somehow only Benzino and Ja Rule affiliates only seemed to be quoted for a long time. The credibility of the magazine was shot with that. I don't know if the Source has ever truly recovered, but most people flipped to XXL. But both magazines had serious biases during those beefs. XXL took advantage of it and featured Eminem and Co. heavily during the beefs.

    The Source was originally founded by just Dave Mays and a buddy of his from Harvard in 1988. Till the late 90's it was a respectful magazine for the hip hop culture. Benzino started as an artist in the early 90's and worked his way up to an Executive and then in the mid to late 90's was "suddenly announced" as the co-owner ( hence the shots at Dave Mays being extorted by Benzino ). Once Benzino became co-owner, that's when everything went downhill ( the mics system, the blackmail, extortion, etc...).
