  • My Bougainvillea glabra is a flowering machine. It puts out a big show of magenta/purplish color off and on for 9 or 10 months out of the year. It grows up and over my garage which sits at the end of a long, narrow driveway. It gets a major “WOW” from anyone who sees it. Here’s how I prune and trim my bougainvillea for maximum bloom.

    I’ll do 4 more lighter prunings throughout the warm season, ending in early December. My bougainvillea is a riot of color and yours can be too. Just remember, tip pruning (you’ll see the technique in ths video) is one of the keys to this dense show of flowers. It’s my own floral fiesta!

    My dad bought plant and I had no idea what it was. I have no experience with plants, but he planted this right outside by my room and I was tired of seeing it hug the wall. Now that I saw this video, I’m so happy that the outside of my room is the wall that the bougainvillea can grow on!!!

      You're not alone. Was just shopping at Lowes and seen this tall beautiful bloom flower on a trellis and didn't know what it was, just knew it was nice looking, so I purchased it. When I gotten home and kept it outside trying to figure out where to place it the weather started to change to fall. The leaves fell off the tree pretty quick and became bear. I was ok with it, this will give me time to figure out where to plant it in the front year next year 2024. I've done so much research on this boganvillea and seen so many ideas and decorations where I can put it and look nice at the same time. Can't wait for the weather to break so I can explore this boganivillae.

    1/4/2016 happy new year.
    This is the nicest Bog I've ever seen. a total WOW factor. I live in S. Florida and these are everywhere. pink, red, white, a VERY cool looking Yellow and shabby kind of orange and many people have them in their yard. this is the Tropics and they grow and flower all year long. 95% the homeowners keep them cut WAY back to only 5 or 6 feet tall because of the 3" thorns.
    a neighbor has one that's 12 - 15 feet tall. it grew straight up and looks like a huge pink fountain. everything grows out of center and hangs all the way down. it's very nice.

      Hi +Nunya Biznis & Happy New Year to you! My Bougainvillea is colorful most of the year, that's for sure. I've gotten used to pruning it & can usually avoid being scratched. Yes, it's a total WOW when in full bloom. I love it when the bougies do that arching "thing" too - so pretty. Nell

    Beyond beautiful!
    A tall order to aspire for my fledgling staked bougainvillea. Newly acquired in a pot and transplanted under a front window that gets lots of afternoon sun. About three weeks, no new growths, much less flower bracts but I'm encouraged that it's holding its own.

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  9 лет назад

      Well thank you! mjd I look at it many times a day & still love it. Bougainvilleas can be a little slow to take off so be patient. Plus, they don't like to have their roots disturbed (they actually prefer to be planted grow pot & all) so it's just settling in. Plus, they love sun & heat. I hope your bougainvillea brings you a lot of color too! Best, Nell

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  8 лет назад +2

      Yes +Sunnycoast Klips because they bloom on new wood, the tip pruning brings out maximum color for me. And, we are in the midst of a severe drought & I haven't supplementally watered my bougies for 4 years. Last year we only had a little under 5 inches of rain all year. Now those are tough plants - hardly any water, no fertilizers or feeding & looking good! Nell

    I need help!
    Please show how to actually do one area of your beautiful plant instead of telling us about it. I tend to learn by watching. For instance, getting the plant pruned, pick one area and finish it on video as you describe pls.
    Pinching one or two the pruning one branch doesn’t show me how to do an entire area.
    Your plant is huge but you could pick one area and prune/pinch it all.
    Mine is in a pot. Zone 8a. It is same type as yours. My brachs are strange in that sometimes theyre white and turn pink, sometimes they remain variate colors of white/light pink/dark pink, and sometimes they come out all white, and sometime all dark pink. This is one plant that does this.
    I have been bringing the pot indoors for it to go dormant in winter for past three years. However this year fire ants have made a home in the soil and I don’t want to bring the pot indoors bc I’m allergic to the ant sting. I’m afraid I might loose my plant if I leave it out. Temps this weekend are low of 38-43 degrees. It warms in afternoon to 50-70. Our fall has crazy variants of temperature weekly.
    I could put it in the garage but I’m still afraid of the ants coming out. I heard if you put it inside to go dormate that it needs no sun?? I do have a UV light that I used on it in the garage last year bc I hadn’t heard no sun was ok.
    Any suggestions??
    Thanks Jules

    *HELP!!!!* lol....@3:51...Do we need to trim away all those little "toothpicks" where the bracts were? We have a lot of them where the bracts have fallen off and hubby says those "toothpicks" are dead. Thus, we need to trim them away. I think he's crazy. We have quite a few of them. But I say, it'd be madness to trim away all those tiny-little individual toothpicks! We have a whole wall of them! (To be clear: I can see trimming branches...yes....but! not individual toothpicks?!?) Sorry, I keep calling them toothpicks...not sure what they're exactly called.)
    What say ye, Nell? (You're our Judge Judy on this subject! lol) Sylvia in San Diego. 😎 P.S. If I'm wrong...I soooo will NOT show him this comment and your response. If HE'S WRONG...I will DEFINITELY be showing him this! hahaha.. 🤣

    I had a HUGE hedge in front of the house and it was quite overgrown. It was about 3m tall perhaps higher. Now i wanted it to be cut to about 1m height but the gardener said do it a bit lower. Now he cut it back to the base about 30cm. It had branches about 5-7cm thick.... it looked horrible!!! But now its starting to grow again, 1 of them did die sadly. BUt how far back should i prune all the branches? i was thinking about 50-70cm or so? I live in the Caribbean and i watered it once a week. Then i read its better to water it less so i stopped doing that. I noticed some branch just simply snapped off??? Not sure why that is. I know nothing about gardening by the way. I have no idea what to do?

      That's ok while they're rooting +debraj sarkar but you definitely want to give them a lot more sun once they've rooted. Give them a good watering about once a week - you don't want the saplings to dry out nor do you want to rot them out either. Nell

    Where are you located? It seems your bougainvillea doesn't have any thorns. Here in Southern AZ, I have bougainvillea vines that are very thorny.
    How often you water yours?

    I live in the San Diego area. My bougainvillea sometimes looks gorgeous, but then the bracts (I think you called them) all turn brown and dry up and eventually fall off and/or get stuck in the bush. And I have to clean them out - which is a pain - literally - because of the thorns. What can I do to stop that - or make it occur less often? Also, I am thinking the soil around the base probably doesn't have good drainage - so maybe I should dig around base and make for better drainage.

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  8 лет назад

      Hi Mark - The papery thin colored bracts turn brown as time goes on, it's just part of the cycle of the bloom. Because bougies are dense growing, the bracts get caught inside the plant. This happens with my B. glabra because it flowers so much. The only way to stop that is to stop the flowering. Nell

    • @markbennett8256
      @markbennett8256 8 лет назад +1

      Well, don't want to stop the flowering. But is it normal for them to all do it at once? Then the plant looks like it is almost dead. So then I trim of the parts that look dead. Then it grows back and looks gorgeous. So I guess what I am asking is it possible to have different branches on different cycles so some are beautiful while others are brown? I hate that ALL branches go brown at the same time. Thanks.

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  8 лет назад +1

      Hi Mark - Yes, in my experience bougainvilleas put out a big bloom at once. You could try the different branch thing, but because they blooms heaviest when it's the warmest & sunniest, I'm not sure if you could get the timing down. Because they bloom on new growth, you could try pruning or tipping some of the plant & letting the other part or parts go for awhile. Nell

      Thank you. Also, now that I know they like sandy and slightly acidic soil, that may help shorten the down time. Oh - and that I shouldn't water them too much! I was doing exactly the wrong thing by watering more.

    I bought a bougainvillea a month ago and slowly the flower/bracts dropped. i then proceeded to prune/pinch the plant. Will it flower again this year?

    • @ALopez-oy8hl
      @ALopez-oy8hl 5 лет назад

      Don’t water the leaves when you water this plant 🙂
      Leaves drop when you water leaves, water the dirt surrounding it and not too often. Rain is fine, they are pretty tolerant. Don’t plant in the shade.

      Bougainvilleas bloom best under arid conditions. Too much water translates to few or no blooms but give you more leaves.

      Yup ive seen other videos where they say not to prune them at all because it causes them to grow leaves and not flowers. Only prune if you need to control its growth and to remove any disease.

      Hi +jess joseph de ocampo The 1 you see in the video is very established - over 20 years old. I haven't supplementally watered it in 3 years & we haven't gotten much winter rain here in CA the last few years. It's still in bloom in late Nov. A tough plant!

      I mean how often do you prune ? We have three potted bougainvilleas,they are about 9 months old, they have bloomed on me last october and november :) i live in a tropical country. Now the flowers are mosltly dead but there are still some new ones starting to grow from new wood.Can i do tipping on them right after the blooms die or should i let them grow some more??? Thanks :)

    • @JoyUsGarden
      @JoyUsGarden  8 лет назад +1

      I do 1 big pruning every year in mid-winter +jess joseph de ocampo & 3 or 4 smaller ones thoughout the year. Bougies are tough so you can do the tipping right after the blooms fade, even if the plants are young. Hope that helps! Nell
