Such a great period to grow up in. I used to love the distinct scream of Bill's car down the back stretch. I thought for sure that with the new t-bird body, bill would dominate 1987. Earnhardt wound up spanking everyone really bad. But bill would come back in 1988. Interesting fact, only 6 of Bill's 44 wins came at Daytona and Talladega. He won 7 times at Michigan, 5 times at pocono, 5 times at Darlington, 5 times at Atlanta, 4 times at Dover, 4 times at rockingham, 2 times at Charlotte, 1 time at Richmond, 1 time at bristol, 1 time at indy, 1 time at Phoenix, 1 time at homestead, and 1 time at riverside

I grew up in So-Calif & attended the majority of the Cup & Indy races at both Riverside & Ontario. I was there in 83 when Bill won his 1st Cup race at Riverside International. All us fan's were happy for him & his family's #9 Team, especially because the Victory put the team on the "Winner's Circle Program" & that was worth $250,000 to them. I remember the next day My Dad, after reading the race's story in the paper that told of Bill's good $$ fortune by win'n the last race of the season, Pop looked at me & said....
"Bill done good yesterday, guess we'll have to call him Quarter Mill Bill from now on"
After Darlington in 85, I looked at Dad & said...."Well, Ol' QMB Bill just got a new nic-name" 🤑

The sounds of those cars coming off turn 2 and flying down the back stretch, I was looking for lightening with all that thunderous noise. Then they mandated restrictor plates the next year after Bobby Allisons bad crash. I think that was the last straw.

The debut of the "Tide Ride"! Born in '82, 1987 this the first year I still remember bits and pieces of! Great watch! Given my age, it's always weird to see Daytona pre-Winston Tower grandstand. The addition of that structure really gave the facility a very distinctive, prominent, far more modern look like Charlotte. There's a difference in pre small block era vs small block era. Even in the small block era when Ford began to run really well they were penalized by Nascar, IE GM whined to Nascar about getting beat, complained to Nascar and got their way. The CI rule benefitted GM due to the sheer number of SBC engines built and cheap modifications. It was cheaper to build a Chevy engine to go fast than it was a Ford engine. Ernie Elliott showed them it COULD be done though.
