      The XKR is one of the most beautiful cars ever made imo. It's a dignified performance GT rather than just another tiny sports car, and it has some breathtaking curves, especially in the "hips".

    Woah woah woah, "You can trace the XK's chassis back to the XJS"? Steve, totally wrong. The 2nd gen XK has/had an aluminium monocoque, in fact the F-Type uses a heavily modified & cut down version of it (hence the F's slight weight problem).

    • @lothar52
      @lothar52 7 лет назад +14

      Jonny S this is correct. The lead body engineer is one of my good friends.... and the chassis is aluminum!!!! Not a XJS!!!

    • @varsas10
      @varsas10 4 года назад

      Aldo the XJS used a chassis (well, monocoque) very similar to the original '68 XJ so you would point to that.

      Yes the previous model x100 shared xjs under pinning to save money when designed and helped boost flagging Jaguar sales which it did and helped save Jag from going under as its gorgeous design sold massively in the U.S.

    The Jaguar XK, though I've never driven it yet, it has changed my life. Back in 1998, when I was 6, I played my first ever computer game - Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit. And it featured a Jaguar XK8. Though all other cars were faster, more exotic, it's the XK8 that got my attention. It was the first car I ever looked into (books and journals then, obviously), therefore, Jaguar XK helped me to become a petrolhead. I will be ever so grateful to it even though its production has ceased. Thank you, XK, for changing the course of my life. :)

  • @reality-cheque

    Having erroneously referred to the XK 'chassis' as stemming from the XJS (which it does not) everything else in the video cannot be trusted. I've driven both over long distances - one is a GT and the other a Sports Car.
    You wouldn't want to hustle corners in an XK and you wouldn't want to drive long distances in an F-Type.
    I prefer the XK because it does more: Adequate performance, good handling, excellent ride, more space, more comfort, better looking and now, a lot more affordable!

    As viewed from 2022, believe you will find that it is the XK150 (XK and XKR) that has emerged as the true classic, particularly in post 2010 (USA) form. A thoroughgoing GT, with plenty of understated style and comfort, plus tremendous real world performance. Notably, the XKR is one of the quickest true grand touring coupes ever made.
    Yes, the previous 1990's X100 platform (sold through 2006) did indeed date back to the XJS - and actually even further back to Jag's late 70's Project 40. The X150 - an all alloy design - has its origins in the aluminum alloy X350 (XJ and XJR) platform. The F type is fundamentally also of this design generation, albeit a smaller and lighter car altogether. In other words, apples and oranges

      They definitely produced some great cars during the Ford years. They also produced some stinkers, like the X-Type. My dream garage looks a lot like yours. However I think I'd swap out the S-Type R for an XF-R to daily. Would be happy with either though!

    I felt compelled to add my comments to this video, Firstly let me state that the XK is a 2+2 ie 4 seats.... whereas the F type is a two seater, therefore its like comparing apples to pears for a start. Secondary I have just taken delivery of a brand new XK Signature Convertible that only has 385 BHP...... gosh how do I cope I mean getting to 60mph in 5.3 seconds I mean its just not good enough let alone the 0-100 times of 10.2 seconds.......
    Let me just dispel any myths about this car - I have owned and driven many of fast cars, twin turbo V6 etc and all I can say is this "old" XK is simply just awesome and even sounds amazing, so if theres anyone thinking of a XK - go ahead and buy one because you wont regret it they are amazing, and in many ways IMO they are the F types more distinguished older brother...
    I feel I can say this on confidence as I driven both car myself - the XK don't forget is marketed as a GT car.......
    Rant over.......These guys just bug me when they bang on about not being fast enough and steering not responsive enough....all I say is fkin BullSh!t. These cars are superb and still turn heads, go ahead buy one you wont regret it!!!

    The face of this XK R Dynamic (the XK's regular face) looks so much sweeter than the aggressively, grimacing 'try hard' look of the XKR-S. The original XK8 in 1996 looked a bit awkward from its debut imo, but has since grown into a really nice looking car. I hope the replacement will be just as good, and then some.

  • @lewis72
    @lewis72 10 лет назад +16

    Some of the 'facts' in this article are wrong.
    The XK has no chassis link back to the XJS. Furthermore, the F-Type IS a shortened XK platform. i.e. the front & rear are common to both vehicles, so to state that one has commonality with the XJS whilst the other is much more modern is wrong.
    This is common knowledge, so I'm amazed he stated it !

      Lewis72 he also said the F type was more comfortable on the same road. I've been in both a fully blown XKR-S and also the F type R AWD, and the F type was noticeably more jiggly / rough over poor roads. The XK is still the more "wafty" of the two.

      Strange review indeed. Six weeks ago I finally bought myself a used 2013 XK. Why? Because I did not like the F
      Type - not only because I am 6.4 (the F Type is made for tiny people only), but also because it drives smoother, the V8 sound is nicer (the stupid crackling noises of the F Type get annoying quickly), even the six speed seems at least equal … ah, about everything just feels better. The XK feels so safe on the German Autobahn whereas the F Type scared me (not only because side and back visibility is a catastrophe). Yes, XK's electronic systems are not up to date, but who cares if everything else feels just perfect. In short, I don’t understand the F Type hype at all.

    Disappointed by this - so many fundamental errors (e.g. the current XK was all-new in 2007 and bears no relationship whatever to the previous XK nor to the XJS) and the descriptions of the two cars' behaviour and how he'd like the next XK to shape up are very vague and uninformative.

    I have a 2007 XKR and I wouldn't change it for an F-Type. (I would however for an XKR-S). I think the F-Type is a kid's car, while the XKR is a gentleman's car. By the way, I don't have to ask my girl to keep my jacket, while I drive her to dinner out... (That's what those two rear seats are there for, to take the extra luggage(!), while an F-Type has NO room for a week-end bag!). With the F-Type, Jaguar is trying to compete with the 911. That's not what Jag Lovers want. We want a Grand Tourer (with an R), not a Kart...

    Steve - you're wrong. First, the XK that you're driving in this video is built on Jaguar's aluminum architecture first seen in the 2009 XJ - so there is NO XJ-S DNA in the XK - at all - full stop. Secondly, the F type is built on a truncated XK chassis - essentially an XK with a shortened boot. If you don't believe me, take a tour at the Castle Bromwich plant where F Type's are built and ask the engineers yourself....like I did. You're considered a trusted source - so do your homework mate!

    As much as the XK has become essentially irrelevant, to a more or less extend because of the F-Type, I can't help but say I'm going to miss it. The XK along with the XF really marked a new beginning for Jag not so long ago & look where they've ended up. It's great to see Jag back to their full potential making some of the most desirable cars in the world. I also think the XF might actually be prettier in red than the F-Type at least in the spec they both came in seen here...

  • @reality-cheque
    @reality-cheque 4 года назад +3

    What are you talking about?
    Neither car has a 'chassis' - both are monocoque all aluminium construction and the XK platform was entirely new - no DNA route to any previous Jaguars - not even the previous all steel X100.
    Also, having driven both, the lighter F-Type has a harder ride and a noisier cabin and is more of a sports car than the XK which is a very comfortable Grand Tourer.

The XK's interior is dated and the look is "classic" being a GT cruiser whilst the F type is a more of a GT sports car and both of their abilities are far greater than that of the average driver The F Type range has yet to develop as the XK has but it's got a great start but do hope they bring back a RWD model.
      However saying that I also have an XF Portfolio 5.0 V8 and with only 385 BHP still far more than what's needed on public roads but I think it has the true Jaguar ethos of - Grace Space Pace. It's the oldest one of the bunch and yet still has some better functions than the other two that should be standard with these models.
      The F Type is far from a cheap trashy toy, it's a very reasonably priced, practical and capable 550 BHP grown up play thing. that not many Jag Master Techs get to really appreciate and I consider the engine flare a great security as no one heard a thing when my friend had his electric car stolen at 1 am in the morning !!!!

    As a previous XKRS owner and a current R Coupe owner I agree with everything he said. The interesting thing is the R Coupe doesn't feel as fast in a straight line. That is because the suspension is better and it is much more rigid. The feeling of speed in many cars is the body twisting and the suspension struggling to handle the torque. The F Type is a much better car than the XKRS. It is so much more enjoyable to be in the R Coupe. I think the XKRS in black or dark gray looks better than the R Coupe. It looks more special and more menacing. That and the extra storage is what I miss about the XKRS.

    I'd pick the legendary XK over the toyish F-type. It's a timeless GT and no other Jag can replace it. I hope Jaguar brings it back in production. It's an expensive car to run and insure but I still want it.

  • @tonyslinn7321

    Hmmm... I'm 6ft 3ins tall and my Jags have ranged from a n E-Type convertible in 1970 through three big XJs, an XF and now an XKR (2007, all ali 4.2-litre supercharged V8).
    The problem is space, I first wanted an XK8. Salesman said: "If we cut your head off and about 8-inches off your legs, you'll be comfortable. Seriously sir, DON'T BUY IT.
    I bought a Merc CLS instead.
    But I love Jags. The XF-S followed, and retirement present to me is the XKR, which was finally designed for people taller than munchkins. But I want the roll-out 2014 XK Dynamic R as, I think, my last car. Wife and I are arguing about the colour...Any offers?

    You're comparing apples with oranges, of course they're different, they were designed to be! One's a GT, the other well, err, it isn't! The XK is far and away the more beautiful car to look at, I have yet to meet anyone who disputes that. As for value for money, that's a no brainer, get yourself a £70k+ Jaguar XK now for ten grand while you still can!

      I understand what you mean. To be honest I do kind of agree with you, its just reviewers and companies have been using the word semi auto gearbox for years. to try and make it sound less Civil. eg. the new 540hp F-type is an automatic. instead they'll say its a semi auto, because you can change gear with your fingers etc. I do agree with you but the word semi auto has become the norm nowadays for companies to make their autos sound more sporty. (sorry for long post :/ )

    • @Kaipeternicolas
      @Kaipeternicolas 10 лет назад

      LP640Murcielago Ya I read it sometimes here and there where they claim it's a semi automatic or they call a single clutch sequential automatic. As a journalist, I can't accept wrong facts. My family is in the car magazine business so I do have a bit of a background ;) But glad you understand my point :)

    Sad that he's wrong about most things. The chassis in the XK was totally new, and the F-Type is basically a shorter version of it. The gearbox in both is a ZF fully automatic, no semi auto in either.

    Talking out of his bottom. I have owned xkr's an f type and now the xk dynamic r and the latter is the best. There is absolutely no comparison to the f type the xk is far better. A slower car and not a racer but i'm built for comfort not for speed. My only complaint about the xk is the computer is very dated. the f type you can not even squeeze a bottle of wine inside.
