Dude! That was a fantastic overview of the radio, what it can do, why it is set up as it is, etc, all before you got to the install. Bravo!
Awesome. I have been eyeballing this unit for a long time now, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. The money always seems to go somewhere else when I am close to buying.
My daily struggle lol
I have my Midland MXT575 connected to a Trigger Controller wireless switch which also controls my light bar and surrounding pods. Touching on what you said about using a switch, I have it connected to always on. Just had to train myself to remember that everything is off when I leave the car. I have a solar panel controller on the main battery that keeps it trickling. The Trigger controller too will shut off everything if it hits a certain voltage threshold. It’s worked great.
I'm installing a solar panel as we speak to keep the battery charged :)
Looking forward to installing my overhead panel and wiring in some radios. Great vid!
I'm excited for you! Let me know how it goes!
@@BaptismOverland I just recently ordered a 4 switch panel for the tailgate, it has 3 additional sockets too. One for Dual USB, one for 12V, and the last one is a voltage meter. All operate from the tailgate and I got the mounting plate from a guy off Etsy. I will send you pics on IG and see if you are interested. It is very custom and I have not seen many Jeeps with this. We have the same year Jeep so you can test drive it vicariously through me.
This is an awesome video. So much info. Thanks
I have this unit in my wife's '12 Forester where there is zero dashboard real estate. The controls and the speaker, all in the mic was THE single feature I couldn't live without, even though I could've afforded a 50 watt unit from anywhere. Cannot understand why this is the only unit out there with that feature set. But, it's worked excellent. Using the town's local GMRS repeater, we have a good 30 miles of coverage back to our house where a handheld can be used. Works extremely well. I think your lengthy explanation on the wiring makes it look much harder to do than it is. Dead nuts simple. If you've ever replaced an electrical outlet or wall switch in your house, you can do this too. Does it have a lot of advanced features? No. Does it get the job done. Yes, in spades. Thanks for a great review. Let's see you using it though, another vid is warranted showing folks how to use it!
Most my videos after shows us using it. In fact we got the 575 now for both vehicles and I did a coverage test on them. Glad they listened and created a 50w. Have you looked into them already?
HI, GREAT EXPLANATION!!! very simple and clean, for everybody!!! I've in my jku similar setup like your, the only thing I've plus are a battery protection that command a relay/fuse that power the power distribution box so if go under 12.2 cut all electricity
Oh that's a great idea! I actually have a circuit breaker on mine to act as a kill switch.
thanks for explaining the different ways to mount with drawings. explanation with visuals have ben always helpful for my slow brain. Keep the videos coming! I believe some of the aux. switch systems like Voswitch allow you to run things even when your jeep is not running.
I've had the MXT 275 for a couple of years now... Have not installed the radios... Purchased 2 of them. One for my WJ one for my F350. I agree with you 100% in your review. Very accurate. I've had my GMRS license for over 5 years and now I want something more flexible... What I love about this unit, it works with my Midland walkie talkies.... what I don't like is the removal of the FRS (I understand why they did it...), the Narrow Band (you can't change it) and their menu system... very clunky... and limited channels for repeater... meaning if you have 2 repeaters using the same frequency but different tones you have to overwrite the channel. I have 2 radios here in boxes... I may just install them... and get a better unit for the house. Like you said, these are plug and play... Great review... You mentioned hurricanes I assume you are in Florida... So am I... hope to meet you in person some time...
After having used them for awhile now I agree. I wish they kept the FRS channels (I understand also why they didn't) and the system is VERY clunky. Actually a ton of radios I've used, very similar with menu systems. That analog is annoying lol
Well explained, thank you. Please keep up with this type of video.
Really great explanation and clean install video! I love the setup and hope to do something similar soon. I'll definitely be using your video as a reference.
Thanks!
Great video. Your channel is gonna blow up. You’ll be at 10K in no time. Keep on being honest and keeping true to your vision and who you are. Always a treat when your upload notification comes up man.
Hope so! Thanks man!
Impressive brother really enjoy the videos.
Nicely done! A video on the GMRS licensing would be cool. I've looked into it several times but am currently running a CB.
I'm planning on it! I'll have a video on comms soon enough but honestly it's sooooo easy. Just go to FCC website and you can apply. And that's it. You'll get your license within a couple weeks.
I like your vid. But, and correct me if I’m wrong, isn’t that an external light mount in your bumper, not an antenna mount?!
Yep! But the arb DOES have an antenna mount too. I just decided to use the light mount instead so it'll sit higher
Another great video! Not to hijack this thread but have you done a video on the overhead unit you have? I cannot seem to find it any information would be great. Thanks!
Of course I did! The overhead molle is awesome! Just check my channel.
Great video and great channel. How has it worked out for you after a couple of months? I want to also direct-wire it to the battery but I have a couple of questions, if you don't mind: 1) When you unplug the microphone, is the main unit considered turned off.. as in no noticeable parasitic draw? 2) Do you turn off the power first before unplugging the microphone or do you just straight unplug it while it's still in the ON position? Does it matter?
See that's the awesome thing! There's no power button or anything on main unit at ALL. So basically once you turn it off on the handset (or just unplug it) there's no power draw at all. I'll say this...I've had the unit plugged in since the install and not once have I woken up to a dead battery. I even had the jeep sitting idle for like 3 days while I was out of town. So yeah, as long as you unplug the mic, you're good. That's what I love about this unit in particular. Works really great too. I just have to fiddle with antenna placement to get even better coverage but I'm not sure if it's the antenna or because I'm communicating with handheld units. But it DOES reach far when I'm speaking with other guys who have direct units in their vehicles. We just haven't checked HOW far yet.
Cool man. I'm in the process of buying the kit right now (MXT275, 6dB antenna, 3dB ghost antenna, and univ. lip mount) $244.96 (exc. tax) FREE shipping. Big thanks to your video. Like you, love that our rigs are able to take our families to many places and gives us the chance to see this beautiful country. I live in the west coast (CA)... and we have a different type of terrain here compared to where you're at. Here's from a couple of weeks ago in Sedona, AZ with my fam. ruclips.net/video/v-my10X46FQ/видео.html
@@jrben21 where in the west coast? I grew up in the bay (my family is still there along with some of my best friends)
@@jrben21 I know all about that Cali terrain believe me lol

For hard wiring would a 16 gauge wire work as well or would it have to be 14 gauge?
That depends on how far away it is fr the power source so you don't get voltage drop. There's a chart online you can look for that'll tell you how large of a gauge you'd need. I went with 14 just to be safe
I personally wouldn't go with anything higher than 14 specially since the wires that came with this unit was 14. You don't want to go from 14 down to a thinner 16
Man, more people need to know this channel exists. Such great content and arrangement. Thank you for your efforts!
Did you use 14AWG or 16AWG to extend the power cord?
I went with 14 just to be safe. I RARELY use 16 or higher unless it's just to trigger a relay. Anything that needs raw power going to it, I try to go with thicker wire
@@HM-vu9zw Not always. It all depends on how far it is from the power source. Think of it like pipes right? The water pipes going to your house (and neighbors) are larger to get more water to everyone. And from there it branches off to a smaller pipe that goes to your particular house. And then from there to even smaller pipes to go to your sinks etc. Imagine if all the pipes matched and were the same size throughout...everyone in your neighborhood would be struggling to get water. The farther from the source, the more you'll get voltage drop. So if you need to get more power to your accessory if it's further away. Once it's close enough then yeah you can go down in size. The KEY thing is making sure you're fusing it as close to the power source as possible because if your accessory is demanding too much power but your wires are too thin and too far away, the chances of it catching on fire somewhere along that line is greater.
@@HM-vu9zw Yes you're more than okay BUT if you are leery about it, there's a chart you can look up. Measure how long your wire will be from power source to unit and based on length it'll tell you what size you should be using to reduce voltage drop. Understand I'm not a licensed electrician so take my advice knowing I'm not responsible for what happens to your vehicle. If it truly worries you, you can always get it professionally installed.
@@HM-vu9zw It's one for positive and one for negative.
@@HM-vu9zw Local auto store. Idk man...if you have a bunch of questions- and I'm glad to help- but respectfully maybe you might want a pro to do this. Because you're asking questions that, at the basic level, you sorta need to know how to already do or where to get it. I just don't want you burning down your vehicle because something was overlooked.
