Your tutorial is great. I wanted to share a tip for when I do a wash over clay. I use a cotton rag dipped in rubbing alcohol and it wipes off really quick and easy without having to scrub with the rough sponge. Your work is beautiful
I love these creatures! I will be trying it with regular smooth stoneware clay and underglaze which can be put on before the bisque firing and then a clear matte glaze for the glaze firing. Wish me luck!
I love these and am new to clay making but I have had a go at making the one in the tutorial and for a beginner I am really pleased with my effort. Thank you for posting these.
What a fantastic tutorial. I really appreciate your direct teaching style. A question about the clay; do you make the paper clay yourself or buy premade? And, why do you only bisque fire? Wouldn’t it be stronger taken to full temp, or does the bisque allow the stain to adhere being that the clay is still porous?
Thank you for your comment. The paperclay is pre-made. Bisque fired because the clay is more porous and absorbs the paint better - but is also weaker, so it's a compromise. Better to bisque fire, stain/glaze and glaze fire. But this adds an extra step that some teachers may not have time for. I have 4 classes working on this project at the same time, so I try to simplify.
Paperclay is just regular potters clay with paper pulp added. You could use regular low-fire, earthenware, stoneware clay. However, I don't think air dry clay would work due to the number of joins.
Do make your paper clay. I live near Standard, but the supplier doesn’t carry this, while I’ve made small amounts of porcelain paper clay, to do 25 or 50lbs is kinda crazy without a pug

This is wonderful. Can it be done with other types of clay if I don't have access to paper clay?

In Australia, paperclay is available pre-made. But, it isn't imperative - this project could be made with standard firing clay, such as earthenware.
Where is the workbook??? I can’t find it.
