This whole movie feels like a metaphor for living with an unstable parent who refuses to get help and blames you for their mental illness, instead. The “Babadook” character being the unacknowledged insanity, always lurking in the corners of your family life and only getting more destructive the longer its existence is denied. I know how that situation feels. Minus the literal demonic entity.
ouch this one hit
I think you may have it backwards. The problem isn't the mother being unstable, but rather her feelings towards her child.
She harbours some resentment towards him for surviving when her husband didn't. He's got plenty of scenes wherein he is... significantly less charming, like screaming for minutes at a time and possibly being mildly autistic. The Babadook essentially reflects her resentment, grief, and anger towards him that she doesn't want to face down to.
He spots it initially and she doesn't consciously realize it. She tries to ignore it while he's struggling to figure out how to handle it. When finally she acknowledges it, it becomes too much for her to face and she snaps. She just wants the stress, the anger, the frustration to stop - and when he tells her that he'll love her no matter what she pauses long enough to realize that, yes, she loves him despite all these negative emotions, too.
The grief, resentment and anger is still there - but now it's manageable. Tucked away in a dark corner, acknowledged and not forgotten, but also no longer able to influence her.
Basically the struggles of single parenthood paired with an unruly child and a whole lot of grief at losing the only support you had in your life. It is, after all, *her* story - not his, even though it was framed as if it was his in this one.
Right, blame the mom not the kid who's making crossbows and catapults

FR they just got a new and better gaurd dog.
*The Babadook steals your hats* XD
And the fact that the mom keeps denying that the Babadook is real, the more powerfully and she denyed it so many times.
The mom did so many things wrong trying to get rid of the Babadook:
1. She denyed, so it becomes more powerful.
2. She tried to set the book on fire.
3. She tried ripping up the book.
4. She is filled with grief and hate.
5. She's angry at Sam.
6. She was scared
Also the fact that Sam still loved his mom, even while she was possessed, and mean to him is true loyalty and a bro move.
The dog was a hero.
Sam was making sure to love his mom will the demon possessed her, to make sure to fend off the demon.
The true way to fend of a demon is with love and kindness!

A very big advantage with demons is fear, when your scared it gets more power. So you can either demand the demon to leave, or find out a way to stop it.

The babadook is the mums depression and grief at the death of her husband. The son reminds her of his death because of the birthday date and is also a physical reminder which is why she is barely coping with him and is emotionally distant. She just wants to give up and die which is why the babadook targets the mum more than the boy… she’s trying to ignore and suppress her emotions, but she needs to ‘let her emotions in’… when she acknowledges the grief and depression the babadook is conquered and contained. However, it can’t be killed because grief never leaves you, you just learn to live it just as the mum and son learn to live with the babadook.

I always felt that the Babadook was a metaphor for grief. She tried to ignore the grief of losing her husband by shoving it down with the “joy” of having a child. But as the years go on she realizes she doesn’t like being a mother and thinks that if it wasn’t for giving birth to her son, her husband wouldn’t have died. That builds resentment towards her own son that could easily be handled by grieving properly. When you ignore grief it just gets stronger and stronger until you get possessed with an anger at everyone and everything just for being alive. But once she finally got all of the rage out and realized that even if she hates him her son could never hate her, she lets it all out. Coming to and realizing she’s just happy to have still have someone who loves her. She regains motherly love for her son. Grief never really goes away, but instead of being ignored, it’s handled and taken care of.
That’s why the Babadook is a man in a hat. That’s why they both experience it but the son to a lesser degree since he never actually knew him. That’s why they feed him worms.
