Midna is, in my opinion, the best companion in all of Zelda. She has an amazing character arc, shes so snarky and playful, and by the end of the game it ripped my heart out to see her leave. I mean come on, the whole game is named after her! Midna and Link's friendship is absolutely amazing, and so deep, which is why Midna is my favorite companion, and my favorite Zelda character

Also can I just say that she like twice pretty much sacrifices herself to save link. Like you don’t get closer than sacrificing yourself. I need a switch port and I need some Twili representation in BOTW 2 and I need it NOW!!.

Midna by far she has so much personality.I almost cried when she broke the mirror.My second favorite would have to be Fi.Alot of people think she's annoying but I don't mind it to much,I really like her.
Personally, as far as Fi is concerned, she would be a good companion, if only she had some level of emotion to her before the literal last moments of the story. From the beginning until then, she hardly seems to care about Link at all, actively breaks the fourth wall to tell you the batteries in your remote are low, and when she *is* able to give you tips for how to do something, it's in an emotionless, analytical manner accompanied by pointless statistics.

Noah Schaffner the ending scene is really the saddest Zelda scene in the series in my opinion.
Plus she was like pretty much a playable character in wolf form because she would ride on your back and use her hair to help you move around.
@@drolnogardgames4335 personally I think she would be more liked among the fandom if she had a character arc. Maybe have it that she starts off as the Fi we already know, emotionless having all her functions, then as the story progresses, perhaps she either begins to know more about herself (she could've been some sort of entity before becoming the Master Sword) or she learns how to feel as the story goes. And it's in minute detail in her dialogue that the player sees that she's less analytical and more, well human-like. Maybe even having some dialogue with Link and show how much she's learning to be more of a character and less as a mechanic. That way the ending scene before locking Fi away feels more sad and powerful. I dunno, that's just me though

Fi. Purely because of her design and ending. I cried when I heard her jingle in BotW. Knowing for all these years that shes been alive in that sword for all this time. Perminantly stuck in a state of locking demise away but due to the curse only deleting demise 99.99999999999% as the curse prevents that 0.00000000001% from being wiped from existance.
Somehow Fi will expose this to a Link or a Zelda and will begin to work on a way to break the curse for not just Fi. But for the land of Hyrule thats been in a constant loop due to the curse.
Ganon isnt the enemy, Demise is.
And through this it will be the *legend* of *zelda.* not link. We just play as her bodyguard as she slowly works a way to end the curse. Something that not even the goddess herself could do. Only Zelda.
Also Fi is best waifu. Don't @ me.

i thinks its also one of the problems of skyward sword:first they are dragging you by the hand all the way through the aventure and secondly they are just always breaking the fourth wall a speaking about your control. weirdly enough Zelda in this game is really more loveable than Fi.

I refuse to believe that this is the last we've seen of Midna. If there's any Zelda game that must be created in the future it's a sequel to tp, in my opinion.
Like most things in Zelda, most things are never gone. Take the Minish for example :)
Only the Triforce can bring Midna or the Twilight Realm back
It's definitely a possibility! Fi returned in botw after a supposed "endless sleep"
I adore Linebeck; but if I made a similar list I wouldn't be able tp choose between him and the Zelda of Spirit Tracks. She's very involved in the plot; a close friend of Link's, very proactive despite lacking a body, is determined to help in any way she can... All in all, she is the BEST written Zelda of the franchise, outstripping Zelda/Sheik, Zelda/Tetra, SS Zelda, and even BotW Zelda.
Plus the duet she performs with Link is one of the greatest music pieces in the entire FRANCHISE, in my opinion

My favourite gotta be Link beck and Zelda from Spirit Tracks, they are such good characters in my opinion.

@@av_8596 2026 would be the 20th anniversary of Twilight Princess. It's also the next game after Majora's Mask, so they might be going in order.
Midna&Link is the closest thing in the series honestly about a genuine romance, there are many signs about genuine love (this includes physical contant) between the two and only makes the ending even more depressing, definetly overshadows Ganondorf's death.
Midna is such a great character. Also I’m happy to hear no Navi hate. Growing up I played through OOT more times than I can remember and she never bothered me. Same with Tatl in MM, though I do prefer the growing bond that you get with Tatl throughout MM.

I honestly liked all companions I had, including Fi and Navi (even though I felt like Navi was being a jerk, shouting at me for not going fast enough)

I agree with that completely. Being alone is not always fun when you're trying to save the world. Even if you have a companion who is annoying as crap sometimes, you still are not alone at least.

E z l o. Sassy lil dude. He's the only companion to genuinely make me laugh, although Midna does get a couple smirks or snorts on occasion, she has the benefit of being so much more expressive with her animation. Ezlo managed to have just as much personality as a hat with a duck bill.

I recently finished my first playthrough of twilight princess and holy crap midna is awesome! She was so snarky and rude to link in the beginning and I loved it but later in the game she starts to care about link and zelda instead of only herself and her people. When she left, I cried real tears she made twilight princess such a fun experience! Btw her killing zant was badass

Most of the companions are great anyway, but two of my favourites that were unmentioned are ST Zelda for helping Link through most of the game as a cutesy possessed armour and Groose for changing from petty bully to stalwart ally.
If only Tingle was a companion. He’d be great for BotW 2

To be honest my best companion is zelda from spirit tracks because she's the first zelda that help you when you enter tower of spirit she transform to a phantom and help you tosolve puzzles

Midna is probably my favorite overall, but I am playing Skyward Sword for the first time and I really like Fi.
Midna. Always.
And other than her, my favourite companion in game was my BotW Horse. We explored that whole world carving a path forward together. You felt reliant on them to get around, they reduced you out of sticky situations when whistling for them to come make a getaway, and a tangible attachment/bond that was not scripted to happen.
Midna is undoubtedly the best companion. I'd love to see her again sometime in a future Zelda game, with good reason of course.
Without Navi the Hero of Time wouldn't be able to z-target, that's even more useful than other things you mentioned about her.
Does wolf Link count as a companion in BotW? He might not but maybe?
Phantom hourglass was the first video game i ever played an i love it to this day Linebeck was always one of my favourite zelda characters and is my second favourite next to midna its great to see it get sone appreciation. Although the game wasn't well received linebeck had one of the best character arcs of any zelda companion and id love to see phantom hourglass remastered in future.

I get that this was your opinion but I think Fi was an incredible companion. Even though she doesn’t show much emotion the way she learns to show emotion from your adventures is completely amazing which is why she’s my number 1 pick! But overall I agree with some of your picks and enjoyed the video!

I never played Twilight Princess, so I don't have the same feelings as you. But for me, it was Navi that made me sad. As annoying as she was, still doesn't change the fact she was with us the moment we woke up to the moment the game ended. I was sad to see her go, to fly off now that her 'job' was done.
This is just me personally, but my favorite companion was my horse from botw
Midna is definitely my top pick and for the same reasons you gave. I would have put Tatl above Navi, but only just barely, as I feel she built more of a partnership with him in a way.

So it would seem....
#1 is Twilight Princess' Midna, of course, and for all the obvious reasons.
#2 is Twilight Princess Link, because he was helping Midna with her quest as much as was helping him with his.
#3 Also Twilight Princess Link, but this time the wolf version because he is also Midna's version of Epona.
#4 would probably be Dana Iclucia of Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana, because she's essentially what the kids of Breath of the Wild's Link and Zelda would be: a very friendly and helpful swordswoman of exceptional strength (who can also use perfect guards and perfect dodge mechanics) chosen by divine Providence (and several powerful fairies) and wielding its power in defense of a doomed nation and then going to stasis for a long time until you wake up with amnesia and try to figure out what happened and how to stop it from happening again, possibly eating 56 mangoes in the middle of a fight and cooking a hundred meals (just in case), all while rocking the color blue like it was nobody's business. She also met a divine beast or two that normal people apparently can't see, though she dealt with it with a lot more stabbing than Link did with Farosh and his ilk. Oh, and content was later added to the game where she ends up fighting against an ancient sage superboss who has a very wide array of moves and multiple transformations which tests how will she has mastered pretty much all the core mechanics of her playstyles. Before anyone cries "rip-off," Ys 8 came out around 6 months before Breath of the Wild, and the add in content with the sage and the fairies also came out before the Champion's ballad, IIRC, and everything I mentioned is using mechanics and story elements that have existed for years in various forms throughout the Ys series and are handled notably differently than they are in BotW (her sage is a lot more sassy than a certain Zelda Monk).
#5 is Issun, because Okami is basically the halfway point between Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, to taking place in the mystical lands that inspired Hyrule.
It would be an interesting twist if Navi returned and was less annoying. Her disappearance is never explained. Perhaps she could have more uses in future games and she's the most iconic figure in The Zelda Series (it's a trademark to all things Zelda)
I would say Navi or Fi the thing with navi is you hate her until she leaves then she's the best,

One of my favorite companions has to be spirit Zelda from spirit tracks. Like Midna, there are a lot of emotional bonds that form between Link and Zelda as the two of them go through their adventure and grow together. She has a wonderful character arc as she develops her confidence in her abilities, going from scared and helpless, to being such an integral part of the final boss battles. More so than any other Zelda game.
At the very end, as Link is struggling to force his sword into Malladus' head, Zelda runs over and together, the two of them deal the killing blow to the Demon. It's such a wonderful and satisfying climax to their journey. She's definitely favorite iteration of Zelda as well.

My favorite companion (even though it's for the briefest of times) is Marin. She builds up so much charm and chemistry with Link when they travel to Animal Village that makes her disappearance and rebirth that much poignant.
Also, she tries to wake up the Wind Fish herself, just to help Link leave Koholint. That kind of emotional sacrifice cannot go unnoticed.

It's weird that imps are considered like workers of the devil in mythology but Midna is 100% the opposite, she has an angelic heart.

A good way to add a companion to BotW would've been to have someone who could remind you of something you wanted to do at set intervals. I don't know about anyone else, but there were so many times where I've been dead-set on doing a certain task, only to be distracted by 200 other things, and eventually forgetting about the thing i wanted to do to begin with. A companion to remind you of those things you wanted to set out to do would've been nice.
Unpopular opinion...The King of the Red Lion in Wind Waker. That boat was a legend. Fi and Midna are great too.
Breath of the Wild’s sequel will have the best companion (Zelda, obviously) 😉

Midna is definitely my fav. Twilight Princess was the first zelda game I played and it has a special place in my heart. I bawled like a baby when she shattered the mirror in the end. Her character growth is spot on. But far my favourite companion!
I honestly think that in BotW, Link's companion was Kass, you always met him in some far away place where he gave you clues. He is happy to help Link and he does so many times
My favorite companion has to be Zelda from Spirit Tracks. She’s the only Zelda in my opinion who actually develops a deeper relationship with Link. She goes with Link throughout his journey and helps him deliver the final blow to the end boss.
Side note: I’m glad to see people talking about Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass. Those two games are very underrated.
In all honestly, my favorite companion is Tatl. Maybe because I’m just a sucker for anything Majora’s Mask, but I always enjoyed her presence. Her connection with the Skull Kid is really neat as well, and she’s the only one in Termina that remembers and understands Link’s efforts to save everyone from imminent apocalypse (aside from the Happy Mask Salesman, I guess?) but yeah, she’s great, one of my all-time faves.

I hope we get a companion in BotW 2. Some times BotW feld kinda empty.
The greatest companion character in my opinion is Zelda from Spirit Tracks. She really helps out a lot throughout the entire adventure. She’s the very reason why Smash Bros Zelda can use Darknuts.
Midna is the main reason I love Twilight Princess the most, and why I freaking LOVE the manga because we just get to see more of Midna... also the writing and art are really good, all the characters are well fleshed out (especially Link, who actually has a personality, a character arc, and a weak as well as a dark side to him as well) and we get a story that's stretched into 10 volumes with new things added to the story rather than cut down like the other Zelda mangas.
I'm reading through the manga now as well and I am so freaking amazed by it. I really wish more people read it because it truly is one of the best interpretations of a zelda story I've read.

I've never really considered Linebeck or the King of Red Lions as companions, even though I can see how people consider them to be one. I consider Leaf, Neri, and most especially Ciela to be the actual companions, and you can switch between them to gain different powers.
Navi and Zelda top off my list with Ezlo and Ciela close behind. Ciela has an interesting story arc, and one of my favorite things about her is that she has the same voice as Navi. Zelda grows from a naive, somewhat careless princess into a strong, caring, and confident ruler. Ezlo is hilarious, and Navi, being the first, will always hold a special place in my heart.
In botw 2, the lack of shrines and towers in the trailer could be because Calamity Ganon was sealed, and the sheika technology wasn't needed anymore so it went back into the ground. Just a thought.
I can't believe Fi was an honorable mention DX I couldn't get invested in her since she was literally written as a robot with no feeling and I have to emotionally relate to a character to like them. Also she was so annoyingly persistent in repeating every event that just happened that she just had no chance to be well received by most.
That's fair enough, I feel like she deserves the mention for her importance in Skyward Sword. Just not enough to make the list itself :)

I've not played the Zelda series since Navi. Ive seen play throughs of Skyward sword, Twilight Princess, Windwaker, and Breath of the Wild. I need to watch play to throughs of Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, Link Between Worlds and spirit tracks. I like the more realistic Link, so choose to watch those. I need to catch up on the timeline to understand it all better. Minish were supposed to appear in BOTW and concept art is out there so I definitely should see that one through. Twilight Princess is my favorite so far, I watched the play through. I love Midna. I think her goodbye was meant to be final. Link never does seem to keep the ones who love him most close to himself and seems doomed to say farewell at the end to those builds the closest relationships to. I'd like to see a return of a beloved follower. Link may be able to get to the twilight realm by another way. There has to be another way that existed before the mirror of Twilight. Link going there might not mean he meets Midna. Time might work differently so he travels into Twilights Future. Link's future or romantic interest is never explained and in each timeline something seems to happen. Shade Link is the saddest thing.
Wind Waker's ending is sad. The King of Red Lions and Link had a great friendship before he sacrificed himself!

Surprised Zelda from Spirit Tracks wasn't on the list, not even in the honorable mentions, considering how much she matters in the story line, her uniqueness and progression as a character, her relationship with link, and the amazing mechanic she has in the Tower of Spirits.
She has so many amazing moments throughout the whole game, and her character evolves into a whole new person.
Imo she's easily in the top 3 best companion, and is by far the best incarnation of Zelda yet.
for me personally midna is my number 1 and fi is number 2. the endings of both games legit made me cry. both characters have so much development throughout their games and form a strong and unbreakable bond with link by the end. tatil is also pretty high up on my list for similar reasons. she starts out just wanting to get back with her brother but comes to have a good bond with link and wants to help him save termina so she can save her friend
You can talk about the scene where Midna leaves and I will cry no matter what. I don't have to see it, talking about it is enough. That girl is best companion for a reason!
Midna is my favourite. She had such good character development that can't even compare to the others. Plus her determination, and mischievous personality is so relatable.
Give her a game for herself she needs it (WE KNOW SHE CAN FIGHT PLAY HYRULE WARRIORS SHE CAN FIGHT GIVE HER A GAME THATS NOT LINKS GAME)
I wish I could love this instead of just like it. Midna is HANDS DOWN my favorite Zelda companion. And just one of my favorite characters overall. I really, really hope we get another companion for Link with as in depth a relationship as between the Hero of Twilight and the Princess of Twilight's in future Zelda games.
Here's hoping Zelda will be a companion in Breath of the Wild 2, but if there is going to be one, it will probably be the strange hand sealing Ganon

The geat thing bout Midna (like you mostly say) is that she's able to be flawed and grow as a character in a way that Link generally cannot. It adds so much to the storytelling quality. She's a selfish, mean character who really changes for logical reasons. Most of the other companions change a little, but usually kind of at the very end rather than gradually.
TBH, I don't love TP so much overall, but she was a great character who really, REALLY adds to it. I can't imagine her being more like a Fi or something.
