General Hummel is one of the best film antagonists ever created. Once he lays out why he’s doing what he’s doing, you understand completely. What makes him even more engaging is in the end, he didn’t have the nerve to execute thousands of civilians. He’s not a power hungry mad man. He’s a soldier who couldn’t stand his fallen comrades sacrifice were never acknowledged in service of their country.

Welcome to “The Rock”, this is definitely a great mashup of Die Hard meets 007 (with some saying that Connery’s John Mason being what older version of Bond could have been). This is one of Connery’s finest action roles, proving at 65 the dude still has it ( just check out the balcony scene before he makes his escape attempt from the FBI, which is just a lead to the great action that follows). Also as his debut in action movie star, Nicholas Cage made a great transition. Connery and Cage have really great banter which is the main selling point of the movie. “Well my name is - I’m Stanley Godspeed.” “But of course you are.”
There’s a fan theory that The Rock takes place some time after Sean Connery’s final outing as James Bond, “Diamonds Are Forever,” which, coincidentally, was set in San Francisco. According to the theory, Connery’s Bond was captured during his mission and imprisoned in Alcatraz.

He was the next Tony scott for a while.. And pain & gain shows he can still make good movies.. He just doesn't need to.. He has several classics under his belt bad boys 1&2 the rock Armageddon, the island and I'll even give him the first transformers movie.. But who in their right mind would turn down the money paramount kept throwing at him to make sequels.. I remember both the second thrid and forth movies where supposed to be his last because he wanted to do bad boys 3 but they kept upping the money.. Im sure we will still see some great movies from him in the future..
Bay never eclipsed what he did with this movie. Every time I watch this masterpiece I can't believe he went on to do those horrendous Transformer movies.
No question, the moment someone says Michael Bay I roll my eyes and walk away. This is literally the single movie he has made that I not only really like, but quite love in all of its quirky action movie-nes
Meh hating on Bay is so 00's, I feel we got over it. He has his own style and in the sea of extremely bland blockbusters having an actual style is a blessing. Sure he doesn't care about story or characters but he is one of the most technical action directors ever, nobody can take that away from him
This film hits so many boxes for me. Obviously Michael Bay’s best film, but also to this day still is one of the films I saw in theater to most exceed my expectations going in. If not for T2, it might have been my favorite 90’s action film.
One of my favorite action movies and still to this day, Michael Bay's best film that he directed. There are some annoying characters and stereotypes here and there, but unlike his later films, they are only on screen for a few minutes and we never see them again, so I can tolerate them just fine. There's a really fun fan theory that Connery's role is an unofficial end to his run as James Bond. Its definitely full of holes, but its a cool idea. Without a doubt though, this is one of my favorite movies from the 90's and I'm absolutely glued every time I put it on!
HA!..... Just caught this on Amazon Prime the other day!..... Shame they don't do flicks like this anymore.... The Candyman, Hicks, Sex and The City's Gay BFF, Leo's Titanic BFF, Alien Resurrection Soldier.... What a treat of a movie to go back and visit.....
Like James Bond, John Patrick Mason is an MI6 Operative and some of the existing theories about the two being the same character do make sense : either way it an interesting insight into a much-revered character with a supposed alias.
But that's the thing: love him or hate him Bay doesn't do award show movies. He knows movies are supposed to entertain and does that perfectly. Even 13 Hours is entertaining as a film considering the tragic events the story is based on.
Some facts...The Navy SEAL team that goes in with Goodspeed and Mason were actually real ex Navy Seals, except for actor Danni Nucci.A few of them were Vietnam vets.
A perfect example of acting over action. I love this film and the action is great and a lot of fun, but it is 2 great actors, who are doing a good job and actually trying. Not saying this is the best work any of them have done, but it is incredible & solid acting. This is when Bay's films work, when the actors are either bad or aren't trying (looking at you Transformers) then they are ok at best, but when he gets good actors who are giving some effort, you get this
"John Patrick Mason, of her Majesty's SAS... codename 007, James Bond" There is a wonderful theory that Mason is the real man and real name of Sean's 007.
Just saw "The Unbearable Weight...", and this couldn't have come at a better time. Makes me want to rewatch "The Rock" and "The Wind and the Lion", the latter a vastly underappreciated movie directed by John Milius. Connery was never more charismatic.

Also, re-watching it again recently, I found I leaned more to the dramatic beats of action like the seal attack or the double cross than I did the super mario bros mine cart stuff, amusing as the idea was.
Wasn't a big fan of this movie the first time I watched it, but it grew quite a bit on me over subsequent viewings. It has held up remarkably well over 26 years and is one the the action genres best films. The chemistry between Cage and Connery is amazing and it is why the movie works so well. And, unlike most films of this genre, the acting here is far above average, there is character development throughout and that helps make the movie the bona fide classic it is.
I always compared The Rock and Con Air. I was like 15 when they came out and loved both but enjoyed Con Air more; maybe because there was a bit more silliness in Con Air. Looking back at both of them now, The Rock to me is the better one. With that said, I still love them both. Being a teen in these years of action movies was epic!
The Rock is a perfect movie. As you said, "cinema at it's finest". My only complaint is that you forgot to mention John C McGinley as one of the bad guys!
Great review. Learned a few new things about the movie through this video. A bit side trivia related; there is a RUclips video of a 90's house-music mix which is introed by Mason's (Connery) speech about "Doing your best." The mix/video is appropriately called, "Fxcking The Prom Queen." 😄
