The pilots may have done the job just for jet fuel expenses, but the Pentagon charged Paramount Pictures $1.8 million to use all of their planes and aircraft carriers for the film.
Also, according to IMDB Trivia: "In 1986, jet fuel was pretty cheap - about 1 dollar per gallon. However, Paramount still paid 10,000 dollars an hour every time they went up to film an F-14."

Nice, I've been picking up Navy families all week, for the graduations at the Naval Academy. Spoke to some about the new movie, they'd gotten early screening. They liked it. I saw it yesterday, reminds me of how it felt to see the first one 30yrs ago.
Fun fact about the guy buzzing the tower; he knew it was a move that would otherwise ground him for life, so he planned to milk it for all it was worth and fucked up at least two takes before getting it done.
He was asked to do a supersonic pass, but said I can’t do that but I can make it look fast. Some of the cast gathered on the roof of one of the hangars to watch the flyby, Michael Ironside said that he was able to actually look DOWN as the plane passed, that’s how low it was flying.
Great job as usual. I'll never forget seeing it in the theater, and burning out my parking brake on my 1973 Maverick with a 302 under the hood, screaming through Patapsco State Park on Rte 40 with my little brother. We were just high on adrenaline, the music, and the summer night.
I'll never forget my first viewing either.... I was seated in a wheelchair! The nurses took myself and a number of other young patients out of the hospital for the afternoon to go see the film. It was my first time out of the hospital after I woke from my coma.... I got run over by a truck while riding my pedal bike about a month or so earlier. :-) I remember how the loud roar of the engines shook my tender head and made me cry like a baby! :-D One of the ladies rolled me out of the theater for a little while to calm down. Didn't do any screaming down the highway either.... Had two broken legs! :-D
I was a very hyperactive child so my grandad sat me down one day and put topgun on. I've now watched that movie in excess of 1000 time and know every sound effects and word in that entire movie 🤦🏻♂️🤣🤣
I was 7 when this was released and my older brother had the cassette of the soundtrack. "Highway to the Danger Zone" was the first song on side A, and I don't know how many times we listened to the intro, rewind, listen to the intro, rewind, and so on. Funny to think about now, but shit was badass then
The soundtrack was absolutely instrumental to this movie's success. I remember hearing Danger Zone for the first time as a kid and could not get it out of my head.
I absolutely adore this movie. Sure it's seems kinda corny and cliché, but you have to remember it was made during the time that all these clichés were invented so it felt a lot more fresh at the time. I watch it at least once a year in my home movie rotation and I can't wait to see Maverick as I hear it's a pretty good sequel

We watched that movie so many times, I swear we could recite it by heart. 20 years later, I joined the Air Force. I knew I wasn't going to be a pilot, but I worked right along side of them. Still love military aviation. Also love that you can see so many San Diego landmarks in the movie. Ps. Saw the advanced screening last night for top gun: Maverick and loved it. It hit the member berries just right but also continued in the tradition of the first.
So true. Most movies need a good love story to work. Top Gun is an excellent movie. I have seen it at least 7 times. It's about friendship, love and the desire to be the best. I love Tom Cruise. The cast was excellent. This film is a classic. The direction and soundtrack were great!!
I remember Jerry Bruckheimer saying how the original cut was just 1 long sunset, and it wasn't very engaging, so reshoots were done which lead to the finished movie

"Top Gun" opened the multiple Military Navy/Air Force Movie Franchise with a GREEN LIGHT. If it wasn't for TG, we would have had my #2 favorite Film "IRON EAGLE & IE2" after that, it was sub-par... The music is what allows us all to "ROCK-OUT" everytime we hear the Songs, and that typically pulls us all back to when life was so much simpler!
The irony that Cruise was working on "The Color of Money" at the time as the fresh young face being trained by the experienced mentor from a previous film and now he's occupying a similar position in "Top Gun: Maverick" as the experienced mentor from a previous film.

I was born when top gun was over like 20 years old and I remember the first time watching it and absolutely loving it. Fast forward and I watched the new one for the first time and loved it. It is the best movie to be made in the 1900’s(still think Top Gun Maverick was a tiny bit better).

at a buffet, i personally sneak corndogs into the buffet so others can enjoy them. I hide 6 corndogs in my jacket pockets. it then, is a joy for me to see other patrons of the establishment eat my corndogs thinking they were part of the buffet.
Man, I see this movie and I'm 24 years old again, fresh out of engineering school, rocking a sharp uniform with a 34 inch waist, slamming pints/shots until four in the morning and no mortgage. Then it ends and I'm back, trying to corral a new generation of insane young officers, a generous 42 inch waist, chugging Metamucil/Maalox, and worrying about my kids' RESP... Good times.
Believe it or not, this was always a popular film on the aircraft carrier. It was always a top bill showing on our Channel Fever movie week - the stuff being shown on the last week of the cruise.

I love this film, and it, along with The Final Countdown, made me fall in love with the mighty Tomcat, and now, I'm trying to get as many books on this big fighter that I can get my hands on, plus, I have a few minutes of the fighter to go along with the books. Also, I got the soundtrack back in '06, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Top Gun.

Ditto, it's all fun and games, until Goose dies. It's safe to say that NOBODY saw it coming.
What's great writing is the way he dies is a simple training accident, which is how most of these deaths happen. Nothing heroic or glorious about it.

We just watched this last night with our 16 year old son. It had been a long time since I saw it, and I forgot how good it really is.

Rewatching this after so many years away from it, it was apparent how soap operatic it is, with a bit of dogfighting thrown in.

My favorite movie as a kid.
I love this film, and it, along with The Final Countdown, made me fall in love with the mighty Tomcat, and now, I'm trying to get as many books on this big fighter that I can get my hands on, plus, I have a few minutes of the fighter to go along with the books. Also, I got the soundtrack back in '06, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Top Gun.
