I have a Cub Cadet walk behind and I use the thickest trim string I could find (.170) and it cuts like mad but every once in a while, like 3 or 4 times in several hours of use, one of the two strings breaks. I'm battling blackberry bushes here in Washington state so...thick brush vs. plastic, sometimes the brush wins, but it's par for the course. Just buy a large spool and precut your strings and expect to go through it. I paid $46 for 250 feet of Rotary brand diamond line and I still have plenty of it left. Mowing 4 acres of heavy growth. I have a tip for you that a sales rep shared with me in 2005. If you notice a lot of not all larger trimmer strings come with a dried out sponge in the package. This sponge was wet when it left the factory. Apparently, the moisture content of the string is very important. Because what I'm about to share with you is going to blow your mind like it did mine. Place the string in boiling water for a minimum of 3 minutes and soak the sponge with water, and place it back in the package. You will be totally amazed at how resistant to breaking it becomes. I just did this yesterday with .095 string on a regular string trimmer and I could not believe how much it could do compared to not boiling it. Ps i just bought this string yesterday.
DR keeps coming up with new string, the newest orange with bumps is working great for me, it doesn't spit the string out like it does with smooth string, I use mine trimming Mountain Bike trails, I've use it for 6 years doing at least a thousand miles of trails, I still have the original belt, on my walk behind, I just replaced the mowball, easy to do when its time, thats the only repair I've done to mine, great machine for trimming some mean stuff on some nasty trails in Michigan... Happy Trails..
Hello From Mark In Kentucky; I have a Cub Cadet ST100 wheeled string trimmer which is very similar to your DR trimmer in which I purchased a roll of the Shakespeare trimmer line which has sort of a Diamond shape to it. Like you, I use my trimmer to mow next to my creek and other problematic areas in which I have been pretty satisfied with the trimmer line. TSC has the tubes of precut Shakespeare line which is 18 inches which is a bit short for my trimmer In which according to my orange Cub Cadet were 19,7/8 inches in length and anything over that will hit the guard pretty badly. One word of caution is that the wheeled string trimmers are death upon air hose and cable tv coaxial cables - They will wrap around the spindle within a nanosecond and you can’t shut the engine down quick enough; Don’t ask me how I know that for a fact(LOL).
I have owned several of these DR walk behind string trimmers. My 2010 DR was AMAZING!! Work horse with zero problems. Sadly, lost it in a fire. However, I have purchased two of these since 2016, and both of these have had problems with the belt coming off from the get-go. First one had 20 minutes on it and the belt came off. Took it to my local DR mechanic. He put belt back on and said it will come off again. (why he did not attempt to rectify the belt problem is beyond me). Sure enough, within 10 minutes the belt came off. I called DR and insisted they send me a new mower. Of course I returned the first one. It was going into fall, so I did not use the new mower. My bad!!! The next spring I used the mower. Guess what? Stinking belt came off!! I called DR, they would not do anything since it was "out of warranty", even though I did not use it immediately after purchase. Had my local small engine repair guy work with the belt. Got that taken care of, (put on a Kevlar belt) then the engine blew!! Local mechanic get all repairs done and mower worked wonderful, after putting close to purchase price in repairs into this trimmer. These DR mowers are not good like they used to be. (Ever since Generac bought out DR the quality has declined). Sadly, I will not be buying another one.

You may have figured this out but I have to retighten my belt about once a month. There's a little plastic screw type tensioner. I don't know why they get loose so often.
@@Brett235 My generic tip for screws vibrating loose - Get a can of clearcoat paint and paint the screw. The paint will probably hold it in place, not allowing it to turn.
Get the 255 heavy duty from DR it's great cut quite a bit with it and they sell a 13in beaver tooth blade for it also..good luck from Alabama and mine is like that only difference mine has electric start
The head is great, seldom have anything wrap around it like other brands. But it also stress the line and then snap. I have the same model with the 6.75 exi. When it's working right its awesome. But the lines breaking, slipping belts and governor issues really slow down the work.
I have had to retighten my belt several times. It looks like DR would have made a better system than what is on it. I would like to get the green brush goat but those machines are around $2500.
My Dr trimmer mower belt must be slipping I tried to change it but the rusty screws were not moving, and one bolt broke off. Right now my weeder is useless. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I’ve had my DR powers trimmer (proXL) for several years. Could I justify spending well over $1000 for a glorified weed eater? Yes, I hate using a standard weed eater that much. Much to my surprise, it was worth every penny. Soaking the line seems stupid but it really does make a difference in extending its life. When I buy it I put it in a gallon ziplock back filled with water and cut it off as I need it. That way it’s always ready and I don’t have to wait for 48 hours for the line to soak.

you are putting in the string wrong,,, try putting them in the middle and one will come out east side and them you will have 4 strings each one at 90 degrees just like that fancy accessory they sell , it now will have 4 hits at each weed and push the debris out faster... try it....

When I got my trimmer same kind I was not happy with the green and jumped to the blue and been with that ever since.

You can put a 12" Blade on that... Beaver Blade is about $120 but after market carbide tip blades are much cheaper

The smooth smaller strings are probly easier on trees you want saved than the larger strips with barbs on them!
i use .150 oregon or clyclone strings and i main tian 12 miles of hiking trails..

You don’t need too. Simple to slip the lines into place. Not too hard
With the ripples you will have more breakage-it grabs, slaps, cuts harder than the straight. Pro’s and con’s with both
