Peaking at #8 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, AGAIN was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1997. Another of Layne’s heroin hymns, his lyrics are a painful example of his struggles with depression, addiction and loss, reflecting on the isolation of not knowing anyway out. Which is what it was like for Layne. At the age of 34, he looked more like an 80 year old man. He knew he screwed up, between the drugs and his own depression and then his former fiancee dying, Layne just couldn't find a way to dig himself out of his own mess and at the end with his teeth problems and organs failing on him, he gave up trying. He lost sight of who his true friends were and who was using him. He was never going to give up the drugs. Instead, he tried to attain the same high he felt the first time he did drugs and could never achieve it. Lyrics: Hey, turn me upside down, oh / Hey, feeling so down These are both the effects of heroin. During the high you feel crazy feelings like being upside down and floating or tuning around. Then once you come off the high and it is out of your system you feel depressed because you instantly want the high again. Lyrics: Hey, your weak will won't help her heal her heart Here, he acknowledges that his own debilitation will prevent him from saving his former fiancee Demri from the perils of heroin usage. Demri had two heart surgeries that Layne paid for and two lung surgeries (that Layne also paid for) all stemming from endocarditis that she contracted through intravenous drug use. She passed away on October 28, 1996, from a bacterial infection that was a complication from the last overdose she had. Even though they had broken up for good by 1994, he still loved her and she was still hanging around in 1995 and 1996 before she hooked up with someone else a few months before her death. Demri’s death devastated Layne. The consensus was that Layne never got over Demri’s death. He used her death as the catalyst to go into a drug-induced tailspin in which he would take his addiction to lengths few could imagine or sustain. (This is coming from a Layne fan who was NEVER a fan of Demri and the many times she strung him along) There was cheating and drugs on both sides of the relationship. One of the first songs Layne wrote detailing their tumultuous relationship was LOVE HATE LOVE. Since then, little tidbits of their on-again-off-again affair have made a little line or two at a time into Alice In Chains songs. Normally, when Layne did his vocals he did NOT want anyone in the room to hear him sing because he was self-conscious (he always had been since his teenage years). He learned his way around the control room, kicked everyone out, worked on his initial "scratch" vocals and then called everyone in. He'd disappear while they listened to what he had done and then he'd kick everyone out of the room again and replicate it in the sound booth with much better microphones (Sam Hofstedt or Toby Wright would be in the control room, but out of Layne's line of sight). Well, when Layne had finished the scratch vocals for AGAIN he called producer Toby Wright and assistant Sam Hofstedt into the control room. They listened and noticed the song ended with a “Toot, toot!” backing vocal over the final bars. “That’s funny,” Toby laughed thinking it was one of Layne’s pranks. “You don’t plan on using those, right?” “Yeah, I do,” Layne told him. “Those are going to be on the record.” Sam Hofstedt got the impression that Toby wasn’t really thrilled with the idea. But, from his perspective, he thought Layne took that as a challenge as if to say, ‘oh, you don’t like it? Well, guess what? It’s going to be on the record now!” Personally, Toby didn’t think Layne left the “Toot, toot!” backing vocals in to annoy him. Toby doubted that Layne was that full of animosity at that point. He was just questioning that choice because he expected something completely different. It was hard to gauge Layne’s attitude. At the end of the day the “Toot, toot!” backing vocals ended up on the album.
One band your missing from that era is Stone Temple Pilots. Try - Sex Type Thing - Plush - Interstate Love Song - Wicked Garden - Vaseline...... You won't be dissapointed
You're one of the feud channels who have reacted to AI C Song outside of their 1st3 albums There are some gems on this tripod album If you wanna get lost check out ,,,, Shame in human, God Am , Frogs, Sludge factory off this album
Such a raucous dark and rowdy tune. This is the first song I heard by AIC, and I was a fan from then on. AIC were the amongst the epitome of Grunge in the 90's along with Nirvana, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and Foo Fighters (RIP Kurt Cobain), and preceding them all were the Pixies.
These bands really play with my heart and soul and legit deserve the top 5. 1. System of a down 2. Tool 3. Deftones 4. Metallica 5. Alice In Chains And many many more...
New to the channel and I love this song so much. ‘The Dog Album’ their self titled is my favorite. Dirt would be second and then their EP, Jar of Flies. Such emotional experiences
Top three: Angry Chair Would Man In The Box Great reaction, Rah. If you get time, check out the KORN cover of the song WOULD. LISTEN to the Alice In Chains' version first to appreciate the cover KORN did.
I don't have Alice in Chains in my top five because growing up I never allowed myself to get into heavy metal. But as I have gotten older (turning 50 next Wednesday on the 9th), you learn to grow in music and give respect to those that deserve it, whether they are your cup of tea or not. I find myself now listening more to Alice in Chains. Now I know what the fuss is all about. Their sound is super cool and you can't deny jamming too it. Guitar, vocals, drums, etc...all in sync and their own sound. Killer!
Top 5 Alice In Chains, Deftones (finally getting to see them LIVE in September @bonnaroo ☠️) anything Chris Cornell was part of, System of a Down, Nirvana!!! And the bonus will always be Tool, they’re above all others ❤️
Dang! My favorite band! So f#chin sad, he died before his time! Much respect to you for showing props to Lanie My Top 5 & bonus Judas Priest Iron Maiden Deep Purple Dio Bonus Yngwie Malmsteen!

Alice In Chains #1, then it get rough #2 Suicidal Tendencies, #3 Beastie Boys, #4 Metallica, #5 Monster Magnet, and my Honorable Mention would have to go to Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. Hey man, say man, TY for reactions man!
I remember when this video came out and I’m like why the big asses? They are mocking everything evil about the music industry. And that was back in the 90’’
Disagree. AIC is a power grunge band. They're at their best when they're plugged in. They can't properly express their rage, and angst with acoustic guitars.
Love the song, but the video was always a little sad. You look at Layne’s face and he is hollowed out. He was always thin, but here, he looks almost skeletal and they were trying to hide it behind baggy clothes. Heroin was clearly beating him at this time.
Ay man,.. say man,.. if my momma says it's OK, will you whoop my bros arse real good I'm I give you $20? He really needs it. Hasn't paid rent regularly in over 3 yrs now, and he won't do shit around the house, except talk about all the stuff that needs to be done (by him) around here. If you won't do it, man, hook me up with some1 who will. I know you know some1.
