    I have this pen in the grey color. The blind cap does come off so you can use converter like a piston fill. I couldn't figure out the metal cap over the converter either until you showed how to push it hard onto the converter. Wow, now we both learned something.

    Still loving this pen! Bought it because of your review! Really enjoy this pen. I have since purchased some vintage British Conway Stewarts from the 1950s. Lovely pens all!!!

    My guess: The little extra free floating metal piece is a cartridge stabilizer. So that if you want to put a cartridge in the pen you put that piece behind it and it secures the cartridge to the feed by buttressing it against the end of the barrel.

      Yes, I agree, my Pilot CapLess came with something similar. With the capless it makes a bit more sense since there is the mechanism that moves the nib and then that piece is supposed to “protect” the cartridge... but here... 😄😄

    Beautiful writer helped along by a very attractive ink. Your comment about the black mark on the barrel made me chuckle. It's sort of like color inconsistencies that can appear in granite counter tops (mine) that you have to try not to notice.
    Even at $275 for a steel nib, I would be put off by some kind of cover rattling around in my pen. Although your demo of it fitting then operating the converter makes me think it's for the converter but somehow came loose.

    Wow, that is a beautiful pen...and writer! That would probably be my favorite go-to pen. Thank you for the review and distracting me from working all afternoon on a Monday!

    Stephen, wonderful review, and thanks for explaining the Conway Stewart "minefield" I do not think it can get more complicated.

    I am guessing that the converter sleeve is a weight balance. If you write unposted, it gives a better balance. If you use the pen posted, it should be off. At least that is how I use it.

    As with the last review of Bexley in Arco Verde, I agree that Armando Simoni Club (The Pen Family) prices are -for me- too expensive. It is not racional to pay $400+ for a pen with just a gold nib... this is way out of control.

      Max I would pay for a steel nib is probably $300. Like the leonardo momento zero

    I just received this from the LA pen show before the pandemic, and my thoughts about this issue is that the metal cover for the cartridge/converter is meant to protect the inside of the acrylic resin material. This is, of course, thinking that it was part of a blind-cap system. Who knows!

    Looks great. For the price one might something a bit more elegant than a converter. That said the CS style elements along with the art deco are quite appealing.

    When you were talking about the conical cap finial I happened to have looked down at my lunch and thought you said 'comical' so I quickly looked up to see what was comical.

    Thanks, Stephen and Murray. Very attractive pen with a bonus mystery piece! :)
    You could use up a whole bottle of ink just writing out that pen's name (which begs much contemplation and discussion) and its genealogy!

    Hmm.. let's sit and contemplate just how strange a 'blood orange spaghetti fountain' might be..
    Do you approach with a bowl? A plate? A big drinking cup?
    That's a wild looking pen, boss. Thanks for sharing n

    Dont get me wrong, I dont hate cartridge converters, but what gets on my nerves is when a pen looks like a piston but isn't, too many pens do it and it triggers me

    It is a very pretty pen. Out of my budget, but it's always fun to see interesting pens. I have no idea what that extra piece is for -- maybe to make the cartridge converter look more interesting? But why?

    Can you do a review of the Moonman M800?

  • @ssnoc
    @ssnoc 4 года назад +5

    Manufacturers need to stop trying to make converter pens into piston pens. It never works correctly and actually cheapens the perception of what could be, just a great converter pen. Anyway that's my opinion.

    Manu/ASC bought Conway Stewart USA, not Conway Stewart. It was the US distributor for Conway Stewart. The Conway Stewart brand is stil owned by the Conway Stewart Holding Company, though it seems to be little more than a series of names and a lack of will/money to challenge ASC is the courts.

      Alas you’re right there. I’m genuinely confused to how this has been allowed. This really is a law suit in the making. I’d love to see Dr Brown review a bespoke British pen version. (They are mainly ex Conway Stewart employees)

    Any sense if Leonardo Officina Italiana manufactures these pens too? Material akin to Momento Zero Hawaii, with those resin stripes. Seems Leonardo makes pens for Wahl-Eversharp and for ASC.

  • @omeryehezkely3096

    Seems like ASC are shopping around... Too bad their pens look too much Italian when compared to the original companies. Even worse, they are always too expensive.

  • @pedrojpinto

    #conspiracytheory It is the converter-equivalent of a tin foil hat, preventing the ink from being mind-controlled by aliens. You do not want an alien-controlled ink blob taking over your nice 90g clairefontaine. It can get messy.

    Has any of the non-existing brands not yet taken over ASC? And does anyone get a grip on which Conway Stewart is the right one? It again looks like this is another replica made by a large ASC replica company.Nibs for these so-called ASC Conway Stewart is manufactured by Bock or British Spoken.......? In summary this is a beautiful hybrid of a great brand, a tacky replica manufacturer ASC and good nibs I suspect are German nibs?

    Beautiful pen, like the honest review but: There were quite a few "rides" that current pen companies took over pen companies of days past - most of them embarrassing. I can not think of even one such attempt that was more than an old badge over new stuff. So when you think about it - why do that?? If we want nostalgia, and we do, leave things the way they were: Conway Stewart made such beautiful pens...

    My conspiracy theory about the metal cover on the converter is that President Trump ordered the Western to use all the steel in order to not allow China to sell theirs.

    Thank you Murray for lending this pen to be reviewed, you’ve got some really nice pens, and to lend them like this makes you a good fellow,,, but DrStephen will always be ACE, in my humble opinion... That pen is a real eye catcher and it does write beautifully with that juicy nib,,,, can’t figure out the loose thingimebob inside unless the blind cap does come off in some secret way to use it??? The Conway Stewart name thing hmm ! bit of an oddity where two modern companies are using the same name, you’d think there would be some kind of copywrite issue ??? Or a falling out about it.?
    The name of the pen sounds like something spewed up on the pavement after a night out on adulthood pop (soda) but... nevermind.
    Best wishes to all PenPeople... Mind how you go.

    I have a question : Why do people test reverse writing? Is there any usefulness or purpose for it? Does anyone write like that? Please let me know.

    • @JoelTurrell
      @JoelTurrell 4 года назад +2

      60 years ago, my sainted mother showed me reverse writing. With the simple mind of a teenager, I asked "That's stupid, and do you ever do that?" To which she replied, "Of course not".

    • @sbrebrown
      @sbrebrown  4 года назад +2

      It was requested by a number of people who do this, for example when they're writing mathematical equations.

    • @lez7767
      @lez7767 4 года назад +1

      Hi.... I use reverse writing if I've made a spelling mistake and I'll write the correct spelling over the top or if I've left a word out eg. 'and' I'll put an arrow pointing above the two words too show I've forgotten a word that is required to make sense... > but turn it upwards....That's there only instance I would use it,,, to squeeze corrections in.
      Best wishes

      People who use fountain pens to sketch will often flip the nib around to get a finer line for creating poche/shading.

    • @humanfirst11
      @humanfirst11 4 года назад

      @@ScatteredGeek although this might be a use case, but take for example "Peter Draws", he uses fountain pens to sketch a lot, but I have never seen him using the reverse side of the nib to do anything related to actual sketching or drawing.
