Zoroastrians in India: 'Dating my way out of extinction' - BBC News

- In India, an ancient religion known as Zoroastrianism is under threat.
There are fewer than 60,000 believers in the country and their numbers are projected to fall further.
The UN says this is alarming and warns of an "extinction in the not too distant future".
Could matchmaking Zoroastrian couples and having more children help keep this 3000-year-old religion alive in India?

In my dad’s country Iran. Zoroastrianism used to be a majority religion but muslims massacred us until near extinction 😔
True they really are scum and even now in India they are trying very hard to convert Hindus to Muslims!
Sad reality 😢
They did it in India too that's why they was able to convert half of the hindus(around 500 million) to muslim

So true. So sad
Not really, vast majority just converted from zoroatrianism to islam. There’s literally no way Arab Muslims would have been able to hold Persia otherwise. It required a lot of tolerance especially in the beginning
I am a Hindu but it makes me proud to see such a diversity of religion exists in my country.sir Ratan Tata is a legend of india!
This country is faith-diverse because Hinduism has the intelligence and sophistication to consider every path chosen by the seeker as valid. Unlike the 'my path the only true path ', type of belief systems.

No converting? Very interesting! Wish more religions would do that. Aside....why the heck does height matter?
It's changing. Iranian Zoroastrians are reforming it.
height is just a preference
Only Indian Parsis don't allow it.
It was an oath they made to our kings and uphold to this date like the wonderful people that they are.
In fact, we are trying to help them revive their numbers by asking their community leaders to accept those who wilfully want to return to Zoroastrianism.
The no conversion is not a doctrine of Zoroastrianism itself as we can see that Zarathustra supports the propagation of Ahura Mazda's message as seen in the gathas. The no conversion is a result of the terms of agreement upon entry to the land of India which is explained in the Story of Sanjan.
It is great getting info on Indian parsi . My grandmother on father's side is parsi heritage. I always curious about its culture and religion....But, after leaving India for South America about 160 years ago, we have lost so much of our heritage, customs and culture.
This is what happens in intermarriage the second generation sibling is confused and the culture is lost of the minority culture and no one cares a daam as at the back of the mind the majority knows that in one generation their sibling will get influenced by the majority one
@@Bhosaramagosx20rs No its not intermarriage that confuses children born of it. Its the distance from the source of the culture that does. A Parsi marrying a non-Parsi in India would always be aware of his roots, culture, religion and can connect or reconnect anytime! So your premise is wrong! The community is placing unfair demands on the youngsters without coming to agreement on wider differences - allowing women greater role in religion such as becoming priests, allowing women who marry outside to still identify themselves as Parsis. There are many who are calling for reform, but the voices of the conservatives still tower above the rest.
You can hardly blame the govt. If the younger generation prioritises looks, height and income over being a Parsi, the religion no longer has appeal.

My mother came to Canada when she was eight. She married my dad, who is Catholic and I had a navjote. I am a Zoroastrian despite my dad's religion. The religion is opening up a little. I went to a Parsi wedding a few years back (here in Canada) with the world's first female Zoroastrian priest. Maybe it's just because we're in Canada that we are accepting this but I am no less Zoroastrian than any other as far as I am concerned.

The promise (which was made a long time ago in a different time and world), was that they wouldn't force people to convert (they wouldn't proselytize), not that nobody would be allowed to convert by choice. 🤦
I don't think there would be a clause, allowing to be converted by choice. If there would be, then at least there would not be a situation of extinction of community today.

Buddy TATA is parsi
They are mostly in western costline
I mean, they are good because their numbers are less. I can already see them actively blocking us from all ways of life if they had population sizes comparable to that of ours. See, their temples are not permitted to non-Parsis. Even while marrying, they are wary of specifically not marrying Hindus, as if we are some forbidden people. They literally know Hindus would worship even their gods without a second thought unlike most other religions, yet they see us like the others only. They constantly worry about their population sizes, as if we are a threat to them. This is the truth. Stop making shit up just because you want to show the world how good they are in comparison to Muslims. The harsh reality is they aren't. It's not like they were very nice and good and victims of Islamic expansion. They ruled Persia for almost 2-3 millenia and took part in many violent wars before being uprooted by the Arab Muslims. Literally every faith other than Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism are intolerant, this is the sad reality. The Jains officially call themselves Hindus even though they have many laws and restrictions which the Hindus don't have. Buddhists literally have no borders when it comes to religion. That's how free and liberal our Indic religions are.
